Today LakeOntarioUnited is proud to announce it has teamed up with the world’s largest online fishing derby - BountyFishing.com.
BountyFishing was founded in January 2007 to provide the world’s largest online fishing tournament, giving anglers the opportunity to compete throughout the year against other anglers from across the continent.
The BountyFishing platform is web-based, but the fishing and the cash rewards are real. BountyFishing leverages technology that has made the internet and digital photography accessible to everyone. State-of-the-art digital imaging forensics, unique patent pending codes and technology for measuring fish will ensure the legitimacy of images supplied by contestants.
BountyFishing is a trusted resource for anglers as a leader in promoting responsible catch-and-release fishing techniques. BountyFishing aims to be the number one meeting place for the global fishing community.
Each week a new fishing tournament is held. Three species of fish are selected from the following list:
- Walleye
- Smallmouth Bass
- Largemouth Bass
- PanFish (black crappie, white crappie, yellow perch, bluegill)
- Musky/Pike
- Salmon (Chinook , Atlantic Coho)
- Trout (Lake Trout, brown trout, rainbow trout)
- CatFish/Carp (Channel Catfish, Common Carp)
- Stripped Bass

The tournament is based on length alone and all that is needed to participate is a digital camera and a ruler. More specifics of the tournament can be found here:
BountyFishing Official Qualifying Guidelines Rules & Conditions
BountyFishing Tournament 2007-2008 dates are from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. To be eligible for prizes you must register prior to participating in a BountyFishing Tournament. Fish must be caught by the individual listed as the “Registered Angler”. The registered BountyFishing angler is responsible for submitting the timely and completed official BF tournament Affidavit form. All materials submitted, unless noted otherwise, become the property of BountyFishing.
Win shall be defined as “first place”. Winners will be ranked according to length submitted and validated by BountyFishing. Cash considerations are paid to the top three ranked submissions per eligible species. The winners will be announced within 48 hours of the conclusion of the weekly tournament. Cash prizes will be awarded within 30 days thereafter.
In the event of a tie, the prize goes to the participant who has registered for the tournament first.
Each winning entry is validated by the BountyFishing Forensics LAB and all decisions are final. Winners must provide their Social Security number prior to picking up any prize. Failure to comply with this rule will result in forfeiture of prizes.
One of the cooler uses of forensic software technology is used to ensure that any image submitted to the site has in no way been altered via the use of Photoshop or any other image editing program. This was of course many people’s biggest concern and it is nice to see that BountyFishing has worked closely with Hany Farid, a professor at Dartmouth College who is renowned in digital forensics. Greater detail about digital forensics can be found here.
So what does it cost and what can I win?
The answer is that is costs $7 dollars per day or you can buy a pass for the entire week for only $19 dollars. Prize structure is as follows for EACH of the three species categories for that week:
1st Place: $1000.00
2nd Place: $200.00
3rd Place: $100.00
You must be entered into the tournament BEFORE that week. This is to prevent people of catching a big fish and then (and only then) signing up for the tournament.
All and all, I am very impressed with BountyFishing.com. They have taken numerous steps to ensure the validity of the tournament and kept the prices reasonable and the prizes fair. We are glad to have partnered with them and wish them the best of luck and encourage you to sign up for their first week for FREE.

I really like all the security measures they took to prevent cheating. It would be funny if the most honest fishing tournament out there was the one held online…
