Sodus Point 7-25-14

Signalman and I gave it a shot this morning on his 23.5 ft Penn Yan (great boat to fish out of) and trolled from Afro to chimney then back to the channel only seeing a little bait up towards the top (about 50-60 ft) and very few fish anywhere. The temp was 42 degrees down about 105 ft and we had one apparent king on briefly off a magnum spoon on the downrigger set at 105 over 180 ft. He was on and  screaming out the drag for a few times then off. We had 2-3 footers the whole time with what appeared to be a 10-12 mph west wind (projected by the weather folks to be 6 mph) We had 4 downriggers out and two wire dipseys with flies (ran them 150 - 420 while out there) and nothing else was touched but that one hit on the rigger. The fleas were pretty bad on  the wires and even the flea flicker on the two downriggers that weren't checked as frequently as usual (because of the rather rough water).  We saw a few folks out deep but they worked their way back in after awhile and didn't appear to be doing much. We stayed mostly in the 130-200 ft range. I'm now wondering if the bite is late afternoon or real early AM. We quit about 1 PM. Despite the conditions and results we had a real good time chatting....always just a matter of being out there enjoying things anyway....

We had fun anyway Mike....even a less than anticipated day fishing in retirement is better than a good day at work
