all manufacturers have pro/con, bells and whistles we just did a huge upgrade ,switched out the furuno's and went with all raymarine. do a search and you will see a couple different discussions on this topic. everyone has their personal preferences just like rod/reels, boats, riggers, etc. it comes down to what you are looking for, $ and what works for you.

I'm buying the new Lowrance Elite 7 Chirp. I have always run Lowrance and never had any issues.

I know it is a different water environment (saltwater) but take a look at what the "big boys" rely on for commercial fishing...for example on Wicked Tuna....Furuno. There is a reason for it....they are highly reliable. I don't own one but I fish with folks that do and they are VERY reliable well made units. With your budget I would try and find a furuno fcv585 or fcv620 on close out somewhere.. for the money they can"t be beat.

Furuno is a sonar unit only, you will need another unit for navigation.

Then you have to add in from $250 to $750 for a sonar transducer, & another $120 for the external GPS antenna, a little over Pie's budget for the low end stuff by about $390. Also the navigational base map is the continents only, so you would have to buy a mapping card to have any resolution on the plotter.

It depends on where you plan on mounting the unit, you really need to have a pretty clear unobstructed path to the heavens to receive the GPS signals well under all conditions. Plus, having an external antenna gives you a backup for the internal antenna. This total for the unit would still be approximately $150 more than budgeted.

recreational fisherman, and Lowrance products have worked great for me fro 35 years

Humminbirds are nice units but I found out it is much harder and more expensive to connect the GPS to other devices such as an autopilot than Lowrance or Furuno. With Humminbird I had to buy a $200 adapter and $45 cable to connect. With the others all I would have had to do was splice a cable.
