Dipsey info

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to dipsey use, so a couple of questions.

There is a left and right setting on them. When set to the left, does that mean they are run on the port side?

Another question, when setting the dipsey release, do you use a scale to set the release weight? Is there a setting that you start with? I'll be fishing for browns in May out of Fair Haven.

Thanks for any information.

You'll notice on most dipseys there is a weighted selector with the numbers on it and  by turning it either way it forces it to go in that direction to the degree you turn it (one being less severe than 3) and yes it will go to the left or port if the weight is shifted that way. Don't go past the 3 setting on either side though as it will force the dipsey to surface usually. The higher the number of the setting the shallower the dipsy will run in the water too.I usually set the release by "feel" depending on what I'm running behind it (e.g. fly, spoon, stick etc.) and what I'm fishing for Walleye lighter than Chinook or trout. You won't get into trouble for experimenting

yes egoody, when setting them out, left on the dipsey you would set out on the port side.like skate said the higher the number, the further away from the boat it will run,but also will run higher in the water.not familiar with fair haven, but i would imagine you will be fishing in less than 20 fow for early browns,so if you are going to run dipsies, they wont be out very far.also,we run them on wire,no stretch helps with tripping the dipsey when a fish hits.someone on here had a really good chart for depth of dipsey to amount of line out, that seemed to be a bit more accurate than the one that comes with the dipsey.i will try to find it.

in   early  May there is not much of a need  to run  divers  your best fishing  is  5-20 feet of water until  boat  traffic gets  heavy and or sun gets high   then   20-30   is fine.   The  Chinook diver when released  has much less drag  than  all other  divers just sand the edges before using

If your fishing FH for browns in may you won't have to go much deeper than 20 FOW. Especially this year with the cold water and ice still in the bays. My best days out of FH for.browns last year was the 3rd and 4th week of may in 8 to 15 FOW. This year would have to similar I would imagine

Thanks everyone for your information.

A while ago I saw the posted chart for the dipsey depth vs line out chart, so I made a copy of it.

I was thinking that running dipsey,s shallow would get another line in and out away from the boat a little farther than my down riggers and lead cores. I don't have a planer set up.

We, the less experienced, really welcome everyone's help and information to our questions.

Thanks And

The weight should always point towards the center of your boat.  So think about which side you want to put it out on. The turn the weight towards the boat (so if you are on the starboard, you will have to turn it clockwise).  You want to put the setting anywhere from 0.5 to 3.0.  If you only have 1 on each side of your boat, #1 is a good setting. If you have 2 on each side a #1 on the inside and a #2.5 on the outside.

The higher the number the less it will dive because the water is hitting the dipsey to create horizontal drag rather than all vertical drag.

if you  can invest  in a  set of boards  there  are many places on line  that show  how to make  your own  for short dollars, also  you can make  your own  mast   a buddy  of mine  once used a  heavy deep sea  boat rod  in a rod holder  that   worked   fine for him.    Im thinking  it would  really  increase your  catch

I agree with you about getting more lines out, with the depth you'll be fishing on the spring you won't be getting your dipsey lines " out and a way from the boat" because you won't be able to get much line out. So like everyone has said run boards. I run a 6 rod spread with 2 boards, 2 flatlines long down the shoot and 2 short line out and down on the riggers Edited by Nontypical

egoody, like what was stated above,if you can,get yourself a planer set up.there is a guy selling a wiley 6' mast here in the classifieds,i have a couple of home made boards and a bunch of clipper releases you can try out.if you come down to the pulski area to fish,i can meet up with you or i can get them up to n.h. in a couple of weeks.

I'm suprised at the lack of guys that are running divers in their spring brown sets.  Slide divers have really produced for me along with the normal spring plainer sets.  Some trips, 2 slide divers have out produced shallow riggers and plainer boards.

I've had days where a diver on 3 setting out 30 feet has been on fire for Browns in May and early June in the skinny water!

Thank you all for your advice.......some of you recommended a planer set up.......well, I just bought one from the classified section in this forum... Can't wait to get it, now all I need is a good set of boards and some releases.

Now I have something else to learn how to use.

Thanks and
