This is what the screen of the Hummingbird looked like for most of the 3 hr troll I did on Tues eve.

I did the southern half of the lake , using every technique I had available to me. Riggers, Dipsy, leadcore, spoons, sticks, Spin Doctors. Ended up with one 15" rainbow on the core with an alewife stinger.

I talked to a couple of guys from PA at the launch. They said they've been fishing Owasco for 10 years, and this year has been there lowest catch rate ever. Said they didn't turn a rod in 9 hrs of trolling.

He also said he saw boats on the lake with big gill nets recently. I have to imagine it was DEC doing a census. If so, it would be interesting to see what the results were.

Anyway, I'm gonna give Cayuga a try next week. I've been reading of good catches there.

That screen sure is clear. There should be something showing from the top down some and you should also see weeds and some debri and bait. Im no expert but i would bump up the resolution until something shows up. Cayuga has a lot of weeds right now but the catching has been pretty good. Usualluy owasco is good at the south end this time of the year. Will be jigging soon. Enjoy your outing.

Now that you mention it, all the Lowrance units I've had showed color on the surface, and there was an adjustment for those colors.

This Hummingbird is new to me, so I very well could need to adjust it. Right now it's set to 'default', but what I believe to be the sensitivity, is set at 10 (max).

I'm getting kind of determined now after seeing all of Alex's great results.

Thanks for all the help.

Rusty.

I beleive from what i just read, that your unit sensitivity value is from 1 to 20 and is set at the default factory at 10. Try cranking her up to 15 especially with the greener water we have now from the weeds. You can try the simulation mode too. I only have had lowrance so yours is new to me. Good luck. Lots of trial and error with a new unfamilar unit.

If you look carefully at the extreme lower left hand corned just off bottom you may have marked a small fish there. The fact that the bottom appears as a uniform relatively thin section without any change could mean that your sensitivity is not great enough and the signal is not penetrating fully to reveal the full thickness of what should be the return signal or identiufying softer targets (like fish). Another possibility is that your transducer is either faulty (i.e. defective) or is positioned incorrectly.

Might be a little concerned with the noise marks straight up and down , could be a wiring problem. After you tweak it if they get real bad you may have to wire your unit direct to battery with a inline fuse...... but hope not.

Thanks everyone,

I guess I should confess that I posted that picture of a blank screen to show how slow my afternoon was. I honestly don't think their is an issue with the unit, but I definitely think I need to read up on how to adjust the unit.

The unit did mark fish, several bait balls around 40', and the downrigger ball at slow speeds.

The boat has two fishfinder. One at the helm, one on the stern. Those verticals lines didn't show up until I fired up the stern unit. The transducers for both are mounted about 2" from each other. I'm told one is 200 and one is 50. Interestingly enough, they both displayed the same marks and depth.

So, it's definitely time to figure out the unit, and to figure out the fish !

Thanks again for all the help ! Hopefully fish pictures coming soon [emoji41]

Howdy all ,

Thanks for the info on adjusting the sensitivity on the Hbird. I found the correct tab, and it made a world of difference once I tweeted it. I could see where the fish would come into my set, and then streak away. Now all I have to do is figure out what they want !
