Best bet jigging lakers next few weeks?

Recommended Posts

I am closest to Cayuga of course, but the lakers there are still spawning, and sometimes I have trouble catching them on jigs  there this time of year, doing better again in mid November..
If anyone can correct me  and the lakers are hitting well there I would appreciate it..
Otherwise, I usually hit Keuka this time of the fall, but last few years there have been awful for me, since the sawbellies crashed, Again, if there are  some members catching them on jigs pretty well let me know.. I don't need particular spots, just real basic insight on  if the fish are fairly active...have also done well this time of year on Seneca around Samson, and the north end of Owasco, so again just a basic yes or no from guys jigging would be great...

I would appreciate any reliable intel from guys that have been scoring with jigs on any of the FL.. My time is REALLY limited so even getting out a half day has been super tough, and I would just prefer to hit water with some active fish if I possibly can,, Thanks to all... bob

Spawning lakers sure can be tough but they will hit a jig though. Its persinstence that pays off. Havent hit cayuga lately but i usually do good just north of the park in 80-100 feet of water. If its calm, sometimes deeper is better. You can fish for 2 hours and get none, then the next hour its limit time. Fished owasco last week and jigging was excellent. The 3 fish that i kept were all females with eggs.Fished the south end about 4 points north of the marina.Lake is very low. Good luck.

We went this morning until the noon whistle.  3 lakers, smallish maybe 21 inches.  We did see a lot of bait fish on the depthfinder.  Launched at Ron's motel at the south end.  Saw bait instantly  hooks right there then up the east shore, got one at Willow point and there were several boats around the whole time, most looked like they were also fishing for lakers  too.   Fish were on bigger tubes, white of course 60 to 90 feet.  We saw scattered fish all over, just ones and twos.  So there is hope that with the new schools of bait the population might increase and the size might get better in the next few years......jk

Hit Keuka Monday from the state park launch with my two neighbor boys. Went to the end of the bluff early. Very little going on there. Fish I had seen last week seemed to have moved somewhere else. Headed back towards the state park around 2. Surprised to find lakers along the west shore across from the launch and further north in 80- 120 fow. Got 4 (21-25 ") by 4:30. Not too bad for an afternoon bite I think. Saw quite a few bait schools also. They liked a 1 oz jig (hermit's of course) painted black with a white paddle tail. Females were full of eggs. The neighbor boys had never jigged for lakers before. I think they are hooked now. They really loved watching the fish finder screen, especially a few times when they saw the lakers head for the jig and then slam it. Fun day.

A couple years ago we hooked and released over 100 lakers at the bluff over 2 days at the end of October. Definitely not the same situation Monday. Maybe they will move in and cooperate later on but cross bow season starts soon..

  • 2 weeks later...

Still some good laker jigging on Branchport end. Neighbor boy had 3 in the boat in first 15 minutes before his brother and I even got our jig in the water. 13 total in 4 hours. 65-85 fow. But the deer woods calls. Lots of buck movement around right now. Cross bow Saturday. Why does all the good fishing and hunting hit at the same time??? Not complaining mind you though.
