  3. Ice boom removal set to start Monday By Aaron Besecker|Published April 21, 2019|Updated April 21, 2019 SHARE TWEET Crews are planning to start removal of the Lake Erie ice boom on Monday, the International Joint Commission said late last week. Based on the amount of ice remaining on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the weather forecast, the New York Power Authority was preparing for the work, the IJC said in a news release. The work by the Power Authority to pull out the 8,800-foot ice boom would start if the weather allows for safe working conditions. The boom gets installed every December between Buffalo Harbor and Fort Erie to minimize ice floes that contribute to shoreline erosion in the Niagara River and may threaten to damage downstream hydropower operations. Removal begins when ice cover is estimated to be below 250 square miles. Last year, crews started removing the boom April 10, the IJC said. The earliest start date ever for removal was Feb. 28, 2012; the latest was May 3, 1971, according to the commission.
  4. It seems now whenever I respool a downrigger I dont have help. What I do now is unspool the entire spool of new downrigger cable. I try to lay it out inn as straight of a line as I possibly can. Down the dock, across the lawn, whatever. I attach my cable to the down rigger spool and with one hand I keep tension on the cable along with lay it evenly across the spool and the other hand I power the cable on. No twist, no bs. Simple and it is a one man job.
  5. They should start removing the ice boom today Monday, April 22. The latest they’ve ever taken it out is May 3rd. Jerry. RUNNIN REBEL Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  8. I have two braid diver setups on the boat and they are setup exactly the same as my wire diver setups. I am an Okuma guy and all of my current setups are on 10' Okuma White Diamond diver rods. I guess to answer your question use what you are comfortable with and what you are currently using is fine.
  9. There pulling the ice boom on Erie today, the DEC said that there was very little smelt in the lower river because of the cold water coming out of Erie and all the ice there. maybe after the ice has gone it will be good.
  10. Any Smelt action at Niagara River Yet?. Bullhead should be in at the Lake shore ponds in Rochester soon too. Maybe after a warm rain and a few warmer days this week.

  16. Since I already have a pair of wire dipsy rods/reels, I'm thinking of rigging up a pair of saltist 30's that I have laying around with braid for early season, shallow, (pre fleas) dipsy reels. I'd like this setup to be versatile for use on the finger lakes and possibly for chasing walleye also. Probably going with 40# power pro on the reels. Looking for suggestions on the rods. On my wire rigs I am using Okuma pro glt dipsy rods in the 9' length. Should I use those or is there a better rod for this application? I have a smaller boat so I tend to prefer shorter rods. Thanks Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  18. Alright thanks. Doesn't seem like there's a magic trick to the whole thing, so I figured I'd ask anyways. I'll remember to do that.
