  2. This needs to happen. This has been an issue since they closed snagging. From snagging to poaching deer, fish and game fines are a joke in NY state. I just read a story about a guy in Ohio that poached a deer and received a $43,000 fine and loss of his license for 10 years. I would think that is a great way to keep guys (some not all) from breaking the laws! In NY state he would have received a hand slap.
  3. Nothing yesterday, too windy. Nothing yet this morning, we’re headed down towards little salmon.

  9. Sorry if I over complicated things for you Ray I'm basically a long time fisherman rather than an outdoor writer per se. I know I get into detail often (and may even get mired in it sometimes) but my main purpose for postings is aimed at helping out people that are either unfamiliar with the Finger Lakes or inexperienced fishing for trout and salmon(or both). After about 70 years of doing this stuff I figured it may be worthwhile trying to give back a little to the sport since many or most of the old timers had the approach of "Hey I had to learn this stuff by myself so I'm not spoon feeding anyone" and I had to acquire most of whatever I know at this point by trial and error or the mutual experience sharing with buddies so the learning curve has been pretty steep. I agree that things out here on Canandaigua have changed radically since I first started fishing the lake itself in about 1967 after fishing the creek before that. There are some big Lake Trout in the lake still but they are not as readily available as in the past or in as great numbers. The bait situation is also different. In the past at the south end in particular back in the 70's and 80's there would be huge pods of bait the size of a football field horizontally and extending over a hundred feet vertically from bottom to surface in the Spring. I haven't seen this or anything close to it for many years. There used to be huge pods of rainbow smelt in the lake and in the creeks in the Spring...they are now pretty much gone.... I have collected data for the DEC Angler Diary cooperators for a long time and on the most recent report one or two fishermen accounted for most of the laker data. I spoke with one of them an old timer in his eighties who uses mostly Seth Green rigs and jerks copper and he agreed with this view and noted that you really have to know the lake very well these days to be real successful. When you combine this with the fact that many of the guys now fishing the lakes are using downriggers, wire rigs, planer boards etc. spending much time fishing "suspended" and not necessarily "bottom fishing" or stillfishing with bait etc. the catch probabilities change and not for the better as far as Lakers go but it does more effectively target rainbows. Most people don't fish specifically for browns here and although an occasional brown is caught trolling it is not necessarily the best way to catch them. They are heavily nocturnal and the big ones are found in closer to shore than most trollers go in the early hours and retreat to deeper water and nearer bottom as the light grows strong. When properly targeted using the right stuff in the right way they can be fairly effectively caught on a more consistent basis. Sorry for being long winded but I figured it as an opportunity to explain things a bit clearer (hopefully).
  10. 2 Cannon easi-troll manual downriggers with bases $240 plus shipping. I am located SE PA just outside Philadelphia but will be up in Oswego a few times through the end of May and can arrange pick up that way. Baytech
  11. I beg to differ on the quality of their repairs. I worked in this line of work. From the new dock materials to the lined walls, they are sparing no expense at this time. They are DOING what is NEEDED to be done. To make money in the long run, ya gotta spend it and thats whats going on. Im excited. Cant wait to see what the "new" fee will be though for a slip... 13. Sk8man, you make a nice out door writer. you made a lot of good points but you make fishing to complictated for me. I agree this is a nice rainbow lake with a few browns but I think the Lake trout is still the bread and butter fish. Laker numbers are way down compared to what we had here 30 years ago. our weather the past month has been terrible. cold front after cold front with high wind. a cold front pushes fish down and makes them very hard to catch. you can still catch them but you won't get a lot.
  14. This is a tough lake to fish this time of year. where do you find the warmist water right now. I can go out tomorrow and run up this lake with one pass and come back and get the other ones I missed. I won't catch a lot but enough to keep my boat from smelling like a skunk. if you get that skunk smell in your boat. its tough to get rid of it. this is not a easy lake to fish.
  15. Very interested can you tell me the length thanks Chad Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. next year. if they rush this project. it will fall apart. The people that build this place years ago built stuff to last. today they build stuff to fall apart in a few years and look for more money to do it again later. look how they paved the road coming in to the park. that road won't last 10 years. the other part leading in is in worst shape now.

  19. Great tournament with excellent community support. Thank you Matt and committee.
  20. Nice pictures. this project will take two years. No way we will be launching this year. they have to lay the concrete for the launching ramp. The longer it sits and dry the better. parking lot needs to be paved. Did you see the work they are doing to the walls around the marina. This takes time. next year we can launch. anybody tells us they will have this place done by June is full of crap. The worst thing that happen here. they let go to long. I'm glad we got somebody with some common sense to come in and put money here. its a good move for the area. with the financial mess this state is in we should be all glad we are getting our marina updated.
  21. This event is shaping up to be a good one. Renewed local community support along with expanded rules and weather committees. This event has gone to a two tiered entry level for Pro teams. Teams can compete for approx half the entry fee than in the past, perfect for new Pro teams or Charter Captains that want to participate with their inexperienced party on board. Of course Pro teams can enter both divisions are play for bigger prizes. The most important thing is to participate, celebrate Oswego's July fishery and it's many twists, all while honoring one of Oswego's own. Kevin's family has chosen St. Judes Children's hospital as the benefactor for fundraising efforts that will run in conjunction with the Pro-Am. Watch for more updates here and on facebook @ Oswego Pro Am.
  22. Great people with a great product that has gotten even better over time
  23. I got a response to my PM saying "Text me at ########" and that went unreturned....
  24. panfisher

    SLR perch

Got it.....cleaning the fish will tell. When we were kids on Long Island we'd catch spawning perch and when you gave them a mild squeeze the gametes would squirt out in a long stream with the male stuff flying out at least 9-10 feet! like a squirt gun filled with heavy cream! The fish were headed for the fryer so we'd have a little fun right after we caught them.
