This photo was taken by the MODIS satellite camera early afternoon, Saturday March 17th. The sliver of blue in the center of the picture is Irondequoit Bay, to the far right is Sodus Bay. This shows perfectly the process of Convection Fog, the NE wind blowing cold moist air against the warm land creating this heavy wall of fog from Rochester harbor West along the Greece ponds past Hamlin...... No sun at all in North Greece, 39 degrees and a cold wind....... 71 degrees at the airport....

SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS
Ran a quick solo shakedown cruise this morning to check things out. After reading the weekend reports from Rochester I didn't expect much other than checking out the boat and gear.
Dead calm flat, ran West to the bluffs, set up in 9 ft.....47 degrees on top with nice green colored water. trolled West to Crescent Beach, picked uo 2 small browns, both on an orange fire tiger Jr. Thunderstick, spun the boat and header back East. Slid out to 16ft. and dropped a Dreamweaver SS chicken wing down 8 ft. on the starboard rigger... got close to Round Pond outlet an the rigger fired with my personal best ever brown, just making 16 lbs. A mild breeze started from the NE, and I could see the fog wall moving closer to shore... I headed in for breakfast very happy with my first 2 hours of fishing for the year..

I've been running NGK plugs in my 1996 90 hp. Merc. 2 stroke since it was new... and as 2 strokes will do, foul a plug while trolling once in a while. Champion has a plug for this outboard, and was wondering if one brand plug may be a bit better than the other at lower/idle speeds?.. Wondering if I should try a set of Champion's....
NGK BUHW-2 vs. Champion L78V
Thanks,

I posted this in Comics Corner and got great feedback, so I thought I'd move the link here to get more exposure.....

I have the same opinion as TCON, I have never seen a news story or read a DEC report about any human becoming ill or diseased from eating great lakes fish..
-
I stopped my subscription for the same reason as Gambler...... the mag is available on line for free from the GLA website home page.
-
Stack the riggers, 2 rods on each, 10-15 ft. apart......put 4 baits right in the strike zone...
-
The 620 has the same software package an the 585, just the smaller screen and less power. 3 seasons on my 620 and I am very happy with the picture and ease of use.

Lots of fish to be had with a small boat
17ft. Starcraft deep vee
90 hp. Merc outboard
Furuno 620 with Airmar P66 duel frequency transducer
Humminbird GPS plotter
Raymarine / Icom VHF's
Raymarine auto pilot
Depth Raider down speed & temp.
Scotty electric riggers with auto stop feature.
Minn Kota 55 lb. bow mount electric with power drive and auto pilot.
Trax-Tech track system with multiple rod holders
Full cold weather canvas plus bimini summer top.
and it fits in the garage nicely..........

I fish out of a 17ft. Starcraft and also have a hand held backup radio. I opted for a waterproof Icom model, so I can get help even if ( God forbid) I have to exit the boat. I keep a small "ditch bag" on the port side dash with the radio. 2 waterproof signal flares, and an orange signal flag I can wave at passing boats. I also always wear an auto inflatable PFD as I fish alone most of the time.

I have been using an Airmar P66 transom mount transducer with my Furuno 620 for the last 4 seasons.... very happy with my choice.

I'm looking to upgrade my old Tracfone to the LG 800 so I can get weather radar on the lake, mostly around Rochester. AT&T is the carrier for this phone. I want to make sure AT&T service will connect on the lake before I switch over. I remember a thread months back about poor coverage on the water with some carriers. I have a small rig so I'm usually within 5 miles of shore.
Any info. on carriers as well as a good weather radar app. would be a big help.
Thanks, Jim S.

Troutman, Are you still making 8lb. balls? I would like 2 for spring brown fishing.
Thanks, Jim S.

running out of a 17ft. Starcraft for the last 20 years.... pick your days for wind and waves and you'll be fine.
Here's a link to a guy who fishes Lake Michigan in a 16 foot aluminum ....... this should get the blood moving..

Tuna Tom rebuilt 7 old Diawa 47 lc's for me 2 seasons ago. Did a complete teardown, clean, inspect, replace broken/worn parts, upgraded all the drag systems..... $190 and I now have 7 reels that work like new with way smoother drags.

Tuna Tom re-built 7 of my old Diawa line counters 2 years ago... also upgraded all the drags. Great service, great prices.

Picked mine up at Hodges Marine Electronics

I work as a mold maker in a shop in Rochester. We have used the Dri deck squares as floor mats for at least 10 years... coolant, oil, metal chips, grinding grit, and constant abuse.... this stuff wears like iron.... I think the mats will outlast your boat !!.... easy to take apart to re configure or clean.

Kicker motor
in This Old Boat
Posted
Gary, Seeing as you are just getting into Lake Ontario fishing, I would make a few trips or even run the first season on the 90 Merc. and see how it goes... I 've been trolling with my 1996 90 2-stroke for 15 plus seasons with no problems.... speed is not an issue.. get 2 riggers and 2 wires dragging behind the boat and you may need more throttle, not less.
Keep a few sets of good NGK spark plugs on hand and change them out every few months..... way cheaper than a kicker.
I also believe putting a kicker on a smaller light weight boat can cause some safety issues, making the rig a bit stern heavy... easier to swamp in steeper waves..
Just my $ .02
