  1. we like jointed rapalas for shallow water planar board trolling for browns.

Depending on the day, silver/blue, silver/ black, firetiger, gold/ orange, gold/black, and rainbow trout pattern all seem to have good success.

Usually we run them with just one or two splitshot 4-6' up the line, just enough to get them a few feet under the surface.

We usually run J-7 to start the day and sometimes trade up to J-11's if the smaller ones don't get a response.

I've also tried storms in the above colors and they work fine too.

  3. Yankee,

She is as beautiful as she is smart. There are pics of her on our website under my profile. I managed to find a one in a million wife...she's not my sugar mama though, she considers my paycheck to be play money...for her!!!

    >>>If I could only go back in time.<<<

Today is a good day to start, make it happen. The world need good teachers and it is a great field to get into.

Penn Yan 20, our best wishes go out to you. I hear that fishing is very therapuitic and will make you live longer!!!

  4. Yankee,

My better half is a professor at SUNY Brockport, how do you feel about getting a master's in mathematics? I can probably get you a shot at the Education department too..

She's so smart it is SCARY!!! Phd at 26 years old, while pregnant with my son. Unfortunately she is TOO smart and I can't sneak tackle into the house without her knowing, so we store it at Dad's....LOL

Dad asks me all the time if we can get a research grant so we can buy a boat to study the lifecycle of Kings and lakers.

Sorry to say there's nothing out there, although SUNY Brockport does seagrant research on L.O.

BTW dad is a licensed Optician - 40+ years of fitting and selling eyeware in Rochester. He's the captain of our little boat.

  5. I'm gonna include both mine and my father's as we share most of the boat rods:

4 BWD ugly sticks for riggers

4 regular ugly sticks with shimano saharas for planar board trolling - shallow for browns and such

    2 diawa accudepth/ heartland dipsy/ rigger rods

2 diawa sealine/ heartland wire dipsy rods

2 diawa accudepth/ firewolf dipsy rods

2 seth green rigs with pflueger 3180 reels

2 no name dipsy rods and accudepth reels - don't use much anymore

2 st croix spinning rods with stradic reels

2 ugly stick lite rods and sahara reels

2 guide series spining rods and symmetre reels

    2 fly rods

2 ultra light rods and symmetre reels.

I guess that's about it. It makes 26 total

    Ray,

we still use our seth green rigs in the spring and occasionally in the finger lakes. They can be a pain sometimes but they work!!!

  6. I also saw the newer accudepth plus in the latest basspro catalog and saw them at gander. I hope that they are a good step up from the regular ( old model ) accudepths, especially if they stay the same price.

Iv'e yet to have a problem with my old style accudepths but we don't use them as much in a month as some of you guys do in an afternoon of fishing.

If funds allow I am going with sealines eventually on the dipsy rods and tekotas on the rigger rods....if funds allow it this year...

    :(

  7. 38 here, although some days I feel much older, teaching tae kwon do wears me out!!!

dad is 70 this year and still going strong.

I agree that most pople don't get the funds for a bigger boat till later in life. In fact, I am headed to the boat show tomorrow to take a good look at a bigger boat!!!

  8. hold it a second before you rush out to buy them...

we picked up two of last year's accudepth 47's with heartland rods 9'6". I think at bass pro in Auburn for $69.00. they were trying to get rid of the old models. The reels are regularly $49.99 online at basspro.com

Dicks has the accudepth 47/ firewolf combo for $69.00. the firewolf is ok, not as nice as a heartland but still good. we have two on the boat and they have worked well.

They have been decent reels for us recreational fisherman but I am saving my money for more sealines.

  9. we were new to wire last year and with the great help of board members we got set up with heartland 9'6" dipsy rods and diawa sealine 47lc reels, I ended up getting 7 strand 30# malin line and it has worked very well for us.

We will replace the tips with twilli tips when we notice the originals wearing out, which hasn't happened yet. if I get bored I might just install the new tips one of these cold winter nights.

Wire was a better producer for us than our riggers last year, by almost a 2 to 1 ratio.

  10. How does the Tekota compare to the Diawa sealine? I am just a recreational fisherman, not abusing my tackle like charter clients do.

Other than the $50 difference between the two, would i notice any difference in performance.

  11. We have not run a cheater on the wire dipsy rods but have done ok with a fixed cheater on the power pro dipsy rods in the spring. I have a small swivel in the mail line 15 feet from the end and use a 6' leader to the cheater spoon or plug.

I would guess that a rubber band fixed cheater on wire line would be the easiest option.

  12. Billy,

She got to pick it out herself and absolutely loves it,

Heritage Furniture on Ridge Road in Spencerport hand made it out of solid cherry, in a queen ann style. It is wonderful dining room set but I wonder if it will float and if she will let me mount riggers on it....

I am not allowed in the dining room anymore, she won't let anyone near it...

As soon as I win the lottery i am coming for your penn yan....
