The question might become "will you give up coho for Atlantics?" when / if they need the space to rear them into the Spring because they will be on the same plan as coho in terms of hatchery use and space on the calendar year from what I know about their needs and development.  I hope that this will not be the case / ultimatum and that another facility will be able to house them to not displace the coho.

I am sure that this plan will be discussed at the next ELOSTA meeting on September 20th at Runnings Clay 7PM and again at the October meeting TBD.

Atlantics are raised in a federal hatchery and the Coho are raise in the Altmar state run hatchery.  I don't see that happening.

  2. Atlantic numbers seemed to be up some this year.  We caught a couple compared to 1 or 2 in a season.  All I'm going to say on this topic is, if they want more atlantics to survive until adulthood, they might want to stock a better product.  EVERY atlantic we caught this summer had damages pectoral and dorsal fins.  I have seen some in pics that looked great and they were bigger fish.

WANT TO CATCH THE BIG ONES?????  This worked for me many times!!!  I would start fishing at 10AM , most of the fishing boats are in at the docks.  I would  check out with them where they were fishing, how did it go . Than I would set up about a 1/2 mile deeper water.  The big ones are loaners and stay away from the pack where most of the fleet catch the easy ones .  SMALL ones.   Fish in 40 degree water, go  close to bottom like 5 to 10 feet  go as slow as you can, that your bait is working RIGHT. You might not catch alot of fish BUT the one you do catch ARE BIG.  The big ones like cold temp, they are big and fat and move slow,  you have to but bait right in front of them because they are lazy to get a easy meal.  I fished for 20 years on Ontario and in the marina  fished out of I was known to catch the big ones.  I fished by myself, it was nothing for me to have 3 slobs on at the same time.

Big ones like cold temps in May, June, July and the beginning of August.  Once they start staging, things change.  As for the rest of the advice, I can agree with most of it.

Thinking of adding two more dipsy rods to the spread. Current rods are 9'6"/MH/wire. Have read where one would want some tip separation. Is this overblown or should I be looking for shorter/longer rods? If shorter, what's the shortest you would go?

I run 2 9'6" rods on the high divers and 8'6" diver rids on the low divers.

Just looked at the leader board .

Is this the first time that in 2 days and a morning there are no fish at all registered ?

Not suprising!  2012 we had a big blow on day one and no one weighed a king in until late Day 2.

Lake was nice so I went out.

Started in 90 ft . Temp was at 50 . My screen was looking crazy like there was a lot of interference . No boats around. Headed north out to 280 .

Screen cleared up around 220 . I don't know what it was . And temp went deeper to 75 80 .

I went 3 for 5 . Got and 11 #  5 oz steelhead a Skipper and a little bigger than a skipper . Lost a nice fish on a slide diver . All spoons . Found a pod of fish and bait around 240 where I got 4 hits .

70-85’ was good first light this morning and the last hour last night.  40-60’ down.

  7. Last Fall, I was invited to fish the Bald Eagle Veterans tournament by Paul Nau of Lake Runner Charters.  Paul puts on this great event every year for men and women that served our country.  Seeing that my father and grandfather were Vets, I couldn’t wait to do this tournament for these guys and gals! Keith and I ran to boat over Saturday morning for Sunday.  After seeing the forecast, we had a plan to run West and ride the waves back to sandy and bring the guys back to Bald Eagle by truck so we didn’t beat them up too bad.  We were met with a bumpy lake but fishable.  I made the slow ride to the Glass House and set down in 130’.  We were met with a blank screen.  I set up trolling Into the waves and put out a simple 6 rod spread (2 riggers, 2 divers and 2 coppers).  We spun the boat around after getting fully set and rode the waves to the East.  We had a slow pick of kings and had a very bad landing ratio.  At 9am, we had a big rip on the copper that we fought for 20 minutes and never got copper on the reel!  That fish came unbottuned right as the 95’ rigger took a ride!  After a crazy battle, we boated a 24.02lb king. That fish took a NBK stingray.  At 11am, we were just West of Sandy and the guys were eager to head to the scales.  We made a quick stop at Rt 18 tackle to weigh the fish in for the Tri Counties tournament and then headed to Bald Eagle.  At weigh in, Dannies king took first place!  A huge thanks to Paul Nau for putting this event together for these guys and gals and the Hamlin Lions Club for donating snacks drink and lunch for all of us!  It’s awesome to see the fishing community come together for a cause like this!  I can’t wait for next year!

  8. Last week off Sandy Creek, we had a laker hit a meat rig 95 down in 115' fow.  When I went to net the fish, I noticed it had a tag in its back.  When the fish hit the floor, I also noticed a healed incision on its stomach.  I quickly removed the tag and got the laker back.  I called the phone number on the tag and talked to Alex from the USGS.  They are tagging lakers all over Lake Ontario to gather data on migration and spawning habits.  If you catch one of these lakers, report the tag and release the fish if possible.  There are internal tags inside the fish that will last 10 years and will give the USGS years of data.  I added photos of the tag for reference.

I wonder how much of the early reproduction is due to the kings spending generations in fresh water rather than in the salt? Does anyone know whether other transplants become reproductively mature earlier in freshwater?

I read a study that showed kings will mature early when boat levels are low.  I will try to dig up the study I read.

I think exposing kids to nature is critical to a kid’s development.

It doesn't happen enough anymore.  Good work Kevin!  I took my kid and his buddies out a couple times this summer.  Some of them had never caught a fish before!
