  1. After the surface water temperature falls to below 65 degrees F., the walleyes will spread out all over the lake. The big smelt eaters will hang in the colder waters but the minnow eaters will be right on the shoreline to the head of the river.
  2. With the Governor raiding the Conservation Fund to run his other services, we will not get any Federal moneys and they will go to other places like Chicago.
  3. Barcelona slowed down for us and we found fish along with a lot of other boats east of Dunkirk almost to Silver Creek. 70 to 80+ foot of water worked. We ran 4 dipseys off the stern at #3 and #1 settings, 90 to 190 foot back. Downrigger lines seemed to foul the dipseys so the riggers made good rod holders. The dipseys worked without the rings as then they were on the same program. Leadcores were run off the stern and inline planer boards, 4 to 10 colors, and all the lines were run far back and away from the boat. 80 foot of water seems deep but realize it is only 4 carlengths down with clear water and your boat will spook the fish away from your track. All color worm harnesses worked and you must have your crew checking the worms regularly so they will not be bored and you will not be dragging around bare hooks.
  4. Think about this. http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_ ... -lake-erie

  6. We were picking up perch trolling in 70 foot of water. The screen showed a lot of them on the bottom there but none in less than 65 foot.
  7. With the ethanol deal I switched my fuel tanks to 6 gallon portables knowing I would not have to deal with water in a big tank. Last fall when I laid the boat up I did not close the vents on the portable plastic tank and left my Cannon Downrigger on the carpet deck. A month later the downrigger was stuck to the carpet and I had to use a knife to cut it free. Apparently the alcohol evaporates out of the vent and dissolved the plastic case of the downrigger motor cover. This alcohol crap is bad for your boating fun.
  8. I have just returned from Barcelona, the attendant at the Harbormaster shack showed us the radar weather and it was green, yellow all the way to Michigan heading our way, so we came home. No other boats out and an offshore wind was blowing that could cause an upwilling and change things. Yesterday my friend picked up 15 walleyes in one hour in one pass. Dunkirk had an 18 footer reporting 2 walleyes in 2 to 4 foot waves, another boat went out. Three charters cancelled their trips today due to weather forecasts. Here at Point Breeze the weather is fine, lots of fish out there but the catching is no good.
  9. Lightning hit a new Bayliner off Barcelona, NY a few years ago. Same thing, the rods were giving electrical shocks, the hit blew a 12 inch hole in the bow of the boat, the occcupants donned lifejackets and jumped overboard. They were picked up and the Bayliner drifted around for a couple days till someone towed it in. The owner never sailed again.
  10. It is already too late to get off the water when the ionized air is causing sparks and shocks on the carbon graphite poles. You should have been moving when you heard the thunder and saw flashes of lightning.
  11. The yellow and white perch and white bass seem to survive feeding on them and that keeps the numbers down. That also could be the reason we find a lot of bottom fish suspending. The fleas congregate where the plankton is heaviest.
  12. Loran will make a comeback after a military action against our GPS Satelite systems when they are knocked out.
  13. Please do not put any ideas like that to the "Desparate for cash" lawmakers.
  14. It could be cold oxygen depleted waters from deep in the lake.
  15. We used a long handled round minnow mesh net, DEC has rules on personal use bait nets at their site.
  16. Bait dealers have the high priced non native specie golden shiners since the certified Wisconsin emerald shiners can not survive the transport with the high temperatures. The dealers can not have both certified and uncertified bait so we are screwed there again. Most fellows are getting their bait themselves and the pinhead emeralds should start appearing shortly. We used to catch our minnows this time of year out deep with the use of Coleman White Gas Lanterns at night and with the clear waters and lanterns it might be our best alternative. Artificial minnows I have no real successful reports but you could try them. They are available at most Crappie lure internet sites.
  17. Fishing the deep waters off Silver Creek has been unproductive for us the past few weeks. A lot of fish available, they just will not bite with all the forage available down there. Miles of bait, twenty feet high off the bottom have shut the bite down. Five trips to 82 foot of water resulted in 0 walleyes. Maybe we should go back to perch fishing out in the bait schools. Water temperature of surface water is 77 degrees. Riggers, dipseys, lead core rigs, snap weights, nothing seems to produce lately there. East of Sturgeon Point though seems to have a lot of good reports from near the Border Line to Buffalo Harbor.
  18. The benefits of this bill go to the government agencies that receive extra tax dollars from the sale of rods, reels, line tackle and sales tax recipients. They are doing nothing for its passage.
  19. The "bill delivery guy" is now collecting unemployment checks, food stamps, Medicaid, HEAP and going on a Fishing Charter out of Oswego.

  21. One of the jobs eliminated was the guy who takes the bills to the Governor's desk.
  22. It seems every day you can trust the government less and less.
  23. If you are directed to a phone, make sure you have enough fuel to return home after fishing all day. Canadian fuel prices are steep. Proper ID is passports, etc. if they come out to check on you. $1,000 is the minimum fine.
  24. Cutting up the fish and removing the skin may be illegal aboard your boat. I am not sure in NY but Canada has rules on his.
  25. OK, right now enter the number on your cell phone, eh. The fine is $1,000 but that may be for each person. Visa may not work, exchange may not happen if you are paying with USA dollars and the way Washington is running things, more money may be needed. Have a pen and paper handy on your boat to record your entry number they give you. Also have your pasengers names, addresses and citizenship handy when you make the call. Your boat may be seized for collateral for the fine, so have an arrangement for transportation home available. Cell phones are GPS tracked so make sure you are still in USA waters when calling. After you enter the border, your cell phone can be pinged to quickly find you. THEY will always know where you are today. DWI's, you or a passenger, are not allowed across the border and alcohol in your boat is not tolerated in Canada.
