    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

====================just wanted to comment on the sad state of fishing going on right now at lake ontario in the fairhaven and oswego area.i fished fairhaven the three days of memorial day weekend. we did well on browns in close the first few hours of the morning and then picked away at the steelhead in 100-200 until approx. noon time each day. what i noticed the most each day was we only saw maybe 8 or 10 other boats each day. it was alittle foggy each day but the lake was flat and there was just nobody around, the radio was dead quiet. i remember 20 years ago comin through the shoot at fairhaven on memorial day weekend and seeing 100 boats.also drove around to the marinas in oswego and most of them are only half full with 10 trailers in the lot.people can't just work day after day, they need yjeir time to play or bad things happen.unemployment, price of food and gas i believe is robbing people the ability to have their vacations but obama says everything is coming along fine.....what a joke...good luck and be safe out there john

Of course it's a sad state. And as long as we keep on voting the way we do, the state will be even worse. 20 years ago folks had money. They wanted "change" they voted Obama. They GOT change...............Happy now???????????????

  2. unfortunatly yes, last year was the worst in many years. I couldnt find any fish any where near oswego after the first week in september last year. the temps were very low in 50's all the way to the surface last year due to strong east winds.

This year seems WAY worse that last year. I pulled earlier that I had planned and I understand I've been joined by others. Fish were/are few and far between. Next year will be a better year,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe!!!! Have a great and safe winter everyone.

  3. I posted a question on Dipsies last week and have gotten great responses...Thanks to all!

One thing thats still not clear to me is how deep you can get with a #1 Dipsy. Luhr Jensen chart only goes to 50ft using the #2 setting based on 20lb mono and 2.5 - 3 MPH. Let back for 50ft is 122.

Does this mean 50ft is the max depth that the diver will go no matter how much line you let out?

I see many postings that others are letting back 200 - 250ft of line.

Does any one have experience getting down to 80ft or more with #1 setting on 30lb braid pulling Flasher/Fly set up?

Does increase in speed make it go deeper?

    Thanks again!

I bought one of these a couple years back. It helps to answer many questions, but there is still room for debate.

  4. The Crazy**** Team would like to thank all of you that congratulated us. We did fish as a team . It is a honor to be where we are. We would of been happy with a top 10 but instead we fished our butts off in some tough conditions. There is not anything or anyone that could take us down from the high we are all on. Thank you Werner for a great time can't wait until next year Congrats to the rest of my team...Joanne...Toni ..and Ellen..and our Net **** Bob plus the observer Chad...thanks again ............Stephanie Team Crazy ****

    Steph,

My wife, Nancy, and I were in the shop you work at and bought the Crazy**** fly and a Carmel Dolphin Spin Dr. You introduced yourself then and the two of us thought it was GREAT to meet the lady the fly was named after. It was a pleasure to meet you.

Saturday the waters weren't friendly so Nan and I stayed dockside. For lack of anything better to do, we decided to go to the weigh-in. What a GREAT decision that was. What a sight for a weekender to see all the boats come in and drop off the coolers. Far more organization that even the pro-am tournament. At least the pro-am of late. While there, Nan and I overheard a couple of staff members talking and this is what we heard. "Over 30 boats in this tournament and more likely than not, the ONLT team we will NOT have a problem with will be the Team Crazy****. The reason behind it is that they are all women and they THINK".

What a compliment that was for your team. For years my two kids played school sports. One boy and one girl. I always took great pride watching girls play for exactly that reason. The girls thought out the game and played with their heads. Your team was in 8th place on Saturday. You did NOT give up and your TEAM pulled off a well deserved victory. Congratulations to all of you.

  5. Several years ago I had a guy checking my boat out very carefully while my son and I were setting tackle. Everytime I would look at him, he would look away. As soon as I went about my business he would go back to looking things over. I told my son to get out the flare gun. He handed it to me and I loaded it. I laid it on the doghouse and told my son that if anyone messed with the boat don't hesitate to let one go. As soon and this guy heard the conversation, he was long gone. I gave up leaving my boat in a slip several years ago. I don't have much, but I don't want to lose what I do have.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

We had a great weekend. Weather and lake were wonderful. Fish were there. Saturday we caught several skippys. All were released to grow and fight another time. Sunday was about the same until around 11 AM, when all hell broke loose on my port side dipsey. It was set at 300' back #2 setting,, with a Seasick Wobbler and a #00 chrome prism dodger, and before I could get to the rod, the readout was posting 450' and still going. It finally stopped at 525' and I started reeling and pumping. I got it back to about 300 and it ran again. the run was shorter. Only out to about 400". Started the fish back and this time when I got back what the fish took it came to the net without another struggle.

Monday my wife and I went back for more. More skippies and more skippies. Then on the starboard dipsey the drag sounded off, same setting, same everything except the lure this time was a Chicken Wing. Took a sleek 25" steelhead.

    100_2410.jpg

We continued trolling and things were quiet. I decided to toss over a couple sliders. On one went another SSW and on the other was a "no-name" hot orange lure with a gold ladderback and gold sparkles. The result was another nice steelhead for my wife. Beautiful fish at just about 8 pounds.

  7. Thanks for the update, Ray. Bob, from what I read here and the contributions you make to the LOU threads I know you're a positive guy with a willingness to help others. So with that said, I will keep you in my thoughts and wish you nothing but the best. Good luck and again, I wish you a speedy full recovery!!!!!

  8. Best bet is scupper failure. I told jim, that if it were my boat, the first thing I would do is remove the rubber diaphragm and replace is with a solid plate, seal it up tight and be done with it. There really isn't a need for them in my opinion. There was no through hull transducer added and the bilge pump was functioning properly. Because of the submersion, the electrical system shorted and everything was working. Downriggers had to be unplugged and eventually, the batteries were disconnected.

  9. My wife I lent Jim and and Marianne a hand on getting things squared away. Nobody knows for sure what had happened to sink the boat. The good news is that the Rookie brothers REALLY know their stuff. The Oswego Fire Dept, and the police were there to help and also did a fantastic job. The boat was raised and nothing on board was lost. Jim has a bullet proof insurance policy and is covered. Both engines (I/O and 9.9 kicker) were drained and restarted. The boat will be completely re-wired, and in a few weeks, it will be a bad memory.:clap:

  10. I am absolutely appaulled at this increase in fees. Every year I purchase the super sportsman for $68. With fees and everything included that has risen to $108 (including $10 DMP fee and $10 trout stamp). It wouldn't bother me so much if I knew all the money was going into the Conservation Fund, but they (Albany) has no account of where the money actually goes. Smells fishy to me!

PLEASE don't take this as a flame, because it is in NO way intended to be that way. My RESIDENT license in NH cost me $118.50. I have been able to fish in NY and hunt turkeys in NY as a non-resident for LESS that it would cose me to do so in NH as a RESIDENT plus I can shoot 4 turkeys. I could only catch ONE fish out of Lake Ontario and that fish would fight harder, take longer to land AND weigh more that ALL of the fish I will catch in NH COMBINED!!!!! If it wasn't for Billary Clinton and your state's gun laws, I would really like to live there. I say again, if you can afford a boat, all the needed tackle, and the gas and vehicle to get there, that the license fee won't kill you. You'll probably spend more than that on beer. JMO. No flame intended. :):):):):):)

  11. All I can say is that the DEC like any other state is not adding to their popularity by hitting the licenseholders harder. Mention cutting costs, as in reducing head count, and they go off in another direction. I'm glad I'm old because most of what I have, I own. I will find a way to afford a license, especially if I can afford a boat, tackle, guns, ammunition, and everything else that goes along with is. The license is a one time annual expense.

  12. Capt Spike,

My wife and I will be out there Friday evening for the weekend and following week. I have not seen the weather as yet, but if the wind is 10/20 out of the west or northwest, typically the waves will be in the 5 foot range. Not comfortable fishing to say the least. I will be around Wright's landing, or at my camper at K & G Twin Pines Campground. On the water, from "my fishfinder", you already know the channel.

    100_1016.jpg

  13. For us, the fishing was slow. Most fish came 100' and below. Most fish came in 285/325 FOW. Hot lures,,,,,SSW and DieHard. Dipsey was green E-chip and the hammer fly. 330' back, #3 setting. Had a great time. Brought a fellow out for his very first time and within 20 minutes hooked up with this 13 1/2 pound steelhead. It came on the dipsey. He was as happy as could be.

    100_1027.jpg

My wife, God bless her, did a fine job driving the boat, netting fish, AND catching her own dish.

    100_1018.jpg

We were out when a rigger fired and the SSW did it's stuff. She had her belt on ready for the fight, but I shed a tear or two and she felt sorry for me and let me boat this nice one. 25 lbs.+

    100_1019.jpg

And the story wouldn't be complete without a picture of the fishing machine.

    100_1016.jpg

I had the opportunity to meet (VERY briefly) Muskeybob. We were on the way out and just not enough time to visit. Maybe next time. :D:D:D:D
