  1. Fish Doc ran these reels hard last season to try them out. In his opinion they are one of the best alternatives out there for a line counter. Drags are not Penn drags but in our opinion they are equivalent or better to any Diawa, Okuma, or Tekota drag ou there.

On another note, I fished my first Tekota this year. I think there drag is far from perfect. When you tighten ot loosen a Penn drag, as soon as turn the drag, it is etiher tight or loose. You don't have to strip out 3-4 feet of line to get it the drag to adjust, llike with the Diawas, okumas, and Tekotas (and Ticas). the other phenomona that amazes me is how can you have the drag tighter than you would actually really want it with wire, and yet they still trickle out line when trolling. I don't get it.

Penn is selling a line counter on the 209 frame next year - which caters to their saltwater jigging clients. Dear Penn, Please make a line counter on a Gti frame - the market is ripe for a linecounter with a good drag! BTW, Anyone got any Penn 875 Linecounters arounsd that they would part with?

  2. I still like a Twilly tip on my roller rods. The twilly makes a nice little shock absorber that minimizes kink issues, etc, when handling around the boat or stowing. BTW I didn't mean to bash Eagle Claw, there rollers aren't necessarily cheap, just a different style that doesn't work the best with wire. Poor choice of words I guess.

  3. Hope you guys don't mind me posting this but I thoiught some of the members might like to attend. Sorry for the short notice.

Lake Ontario King Salmon Strategies w/ Captain Ernie Lantiegne

Friday, July 20 - Lake Ontario King Salmon Strategies w/ Captain Ernie Lantiegne 4-8 pm

Captain Ernie Lantiegne is one of the most widely known and well respected Charter Captains on Lake Ontario. Ernie is a former head biologist for the New York State DEC. Recently his claim to fame has been winning the past two LOC (Lake Ontario Counties, Spring $10,000 & Fall $20,000) tournaments...it's hard enough just to win one!

On Friday, July 20 Captain Ernie Lantiegne will be at Bass Pro Shops from 4-8 pm to sign photos from 4-7pm at the fish tank, and then do an in-depth seminar at 7 pm up in the museum seminar area above the mall food court on "Techniques for Taking LOC Derby Grand Prize Kings".

  4. I had a similar problem a few years ago. My issue turned out to be that my main cables from the batteries to the outboard needed to be replaced. I had cleaned the terminations and it still wouldn't pop it up on the flywheel. voltage was only like 10-11 volts at the solenoid. The quick and easy test to check the wiring was to run a set of jumper cables from the battery right to the starter solenoid. Mine fired right up when I did that.

  5. Yes, it is Eppinger. Not a real common spoon in the shops, but absolutely deadly for browns with the right bend on it. BTW the spelling on those if "flutter devle" in case you are doing an internet search. Looks like the Eppinger site is kind of under construction so there isn't a color chart for them right now.

I was doing a search and found where I told a guy a while a go what colors to get. Stock #s 355,356,357, and 359. the 355 is a plain silver blade that gets a black edge painted on the top or some orange added. (Orange strip on one edge or a half strip of orange nK tape. The other hot one is the silver blade with a 1/8" strip of blue prism and green prism on each edge. I think that one is pictured in the latest GLAngler issue.

  6. The Oswego spring king fishing kind of got started in 2004, a year of real high flows in the Oswego River. (just like this year) They might have always been there, just the focus had always been on the browns in shallow. Anyway, the bite usually gets going around May 1. Usually in the 100 to 150 fow range. Down 30-40 feet at daybreak and then dropping towards bottom midday if it is bright out. Flashers and flies with a mix of spoons. White proChip with LBB Howie Fly is hot!

  7. The sea lions are a major pain to the commercial salmon trollers in Alaska too. They will follow the boats and eat the salmon that get hooked up quicker than the fisherman can land them. The only thing to do to them is to shoot them(illegal of course) or swing in close to one of your trolling buddies and hope that he has a salmon hooked up to attract him to his boat. What are friends for?

  8. I'd look at your speed Erin. The Cannon SNT should be checked against your GPS or a thumper rod to calibrate it. My first SNT probe was right on the money, the second one reads about 1.0 mph slow. Shoot for 2.7 mph. That is a good all around speed. Your dipsys will be speed up or slow down depending on what side of the turn they are on. If you paid close attention, you might have noticed having more bites on the wire on the outside or inside of the turn. For instance, if they are biting the dipsy on the outsdie of the turn, speed up and you'll get your riggers to fire too.

  9. I would say it is a technique for trolling flutter spoons with leadcore. You can hold the line in your hand and twitch it or twitch it with the rod. Good technique for copper line for lakers too. Also used a lot on the Finger Lakes and Lake George.

this technique gets used with streamers for landlock salmon a lot in lots of lakes in the northeast US.
