  1. I never clip lead core into the release... I let it all out..

The release will eventually damage the lead , break it and weaken the whole set up.. The only way you might be ok is a pinch pad or rubber band. I'm way to OCD also... I have line counters on every reel and know exactly how far past the knot I let it out... Details matter in my opinion.

  2. Absolutely.... Short cores I use 20# mono for backing...
My set ups for short cores are pretty simple...
Starboard side...both 3 colors.... Port both 5 colors..
Run the lead till knot gets in the water..let it out a pass or two on the reel...
For releases I use Amish Clippers releases...
10 color cores I use power pro backer. I think power pro slips a little out of Clippers, so I let the 10 out similar to short cores ( knot in water + 2 passes) but I will use a rubber band or two... Half hitch them around the power pro and snap them into the release....
You can also use Scotty pinch pads as well. I use them for my copper set ups.

  3. I dedicate 4 rods for short cores... Two 3 colors and two 5 colors.
In recent years I've been running stick baits on them... You can switch from regular stick baits to deep divers to achieve greater depths.
If it's a spoon bite... You can throw a dive bomb on the leader of one of the cores to get the rig down further.
I have two ten color rods also...
Copper and Weighted steel have been very popular in recent years. I run many different lengths of copper from time to time, however I have a lot of confidence in lead cores...
One hint is to let out your lead until the knot from the lead/ Backer termination hits the water... Then let out a couple passes on the reel.... My theory is the with a little backer in the water, the lead core will sway more...especially in sportier conditions...

  4. Started out front hoping some Sharks would be hanging on the mud Line temperature break. Didn't take long to see the Kings had vacated that area.

Ran East and found a nice patch of 45degree greenish water. Tossed out the gear and let her rip.

Kings were there and on the Chew. Best set ups were 3 and 5 color cores with Bay Rat long shallows on them. Critic Shad and my secret Rats were the best.

It was great to see all the boats out on a beautiful morning...

This week's forecast looks kinda bad with NE winds but next weekend looks to be shaping up nicely..

  5. Waterfowl hunting in NY blows now anyway... Birds migrate down on cold snaps in December. Usually when the first season is just ending or after its closed. They have time to get acclimated to the area, find feed and settle in.
Now they arrive... Fly into a Hot LZ and never get a chance to settle in. Last year I saw big flocks arrive, get shot at by every dock or Floating bush and then hauled the mail. The birds that stayed got super stale... Real fast.
I will be spending my money out of state now.

  6. Cold weather lately has kept the water temps down a bit but the fishing has been heating up. Best spoon for us was the stinger ( regular size NBK) but anything green and silver took a shot. With the kings around, I tossed an old school black and silver rebel on a 5 color core...didn't take long for a Shark to rip it off the board..

If you go out this time of year, fish the marks. We caught kings on just about every rig in every part of the water column. No set depth was more productive and I was chasing marks with the riggers all morning. The marks on the bottom may not necessarily be Lakers... Pulled a couple kings off the floor.

    Tight lines.....0425200900_HDR.jpeg0425200812d.jpeg

  7. 100% spot on... Joe had a hint of saltiness but he was approachable and generous. He and I would talk about his "past lifetime" career and we would laugh how some things were the same and how a lot has changed.
A lot of the old timers I spoke with said Joe was a good cop but had a sense of humor. I met him many years after he retired , but he still had the swagger of an old time beat cop. I was like "Damn... I bet this guy has some war stories". The more I got to know him, the more stories I heard and I was exactly right.
I remember telling Joe a story about a real crappy brawl I was involved in at work. Guys got hurt, but it ended up being OK. Joe shook his head and said.." Better you than me Kid. I couldn't do it again." We just laughed and got back to talking about the the fishing...
It's going to be rough hearing Thunderstruck now.... But when it comes on, it's going to be loud...

I didn't know Joe but from the comments and stories here I have respect for him because the true measure of a man is the way in which he is regarded by family, friends, co-workers and colleagues. The personal esteem, affection, and respect that are embedded in the stories say volumes about him. It is surely the way that someone would wish to be remembered. May he RIP.

  8. Right on Kevin... Appreciate all the help you have been... Just goes to show what can be accomplished when like minded folks get together...

Matt. Glad to hear the little guys got the feed bag on near the surface. The first 6-7 days after they arrived I fed them and I never saw a fish. Beginning to think they all escaped or worse. :sweating:  Got the 4PM this week.

  9. I've been rolling down to check on the youngsters just about every day. Fed them at 4pm yesterday and they are starting to boil up after the feed. We are tracking the feed schedule and the volunteers are doing an excellent job.

With last week's cold weather and the cold evenings coming, the river temperature will not be an issue.

I want to thank all the volunteers who broke their rear ends to get the Pens ready and the guys and gals who interrupted their lives to keep this program going while we are in the middle of this virus debacle.

Thank you to the DEC fisheries for continuing this important program on the south shore. They could have caved and cancelled the program, however they stayed the course and allowed us to do what we do...

Be well.... The ramps and Marinas are open.... Go stretch some monofilament!

  10. A few months ago Specrum got rid of the Outdoor Channel. You had to buy a sporting package to get it. I was complaining one day and my buddy asked if I had a Firestick. He said to download the FrndlyTV app. The Frndly TV app has Outdoor Channel , Sportsman Channel, and the World Fishing Network. The app costs money but it was cheaper than just the one Outdoors channel on Spectrum.

World Fishing Network is awesome. Lot of King Salmon fishing from BC and Alaska. There is also quite a few Saltwater shows. The cool thing is, you can go on the guide and play shows up to 2 days prior.

There are other channels on Frndly TV, but those 3 named are just what the Doctor ordered...

    Be well and tight lines....

  11. Tommy he used to break my balls and call me MissyDemeanor.... I'd call Joe up and say..." Hello...is this Capt Gloomy of the Irish Blunder?" ... Joe would laugh and tell me to stop hanging out with Kyle...

Or better yet, I got caught in the middle of a potatoe gun war between Toomey and another unnamed Capt... Looked like Patriot missiles flying over my hard top...

Some great laughs over the years... Will miss that big smirk... Sucks
