  1. wondering if anyone has used Well Nuts to fasten their downriggers to their gunwale. I have flush mounted rod holders that i use gimbal mounts for my downriggers and some of the mounting bolts are unreachable to hold the nut from slipping. I was wondering if i used a well nut there, if that would supply me enough strength. how strong are these. will these hold up to the abuse of a downrigger gimbal mount????

  2. I took my cousin and one of his friends from work out last night from 6:30 to 8:30pm. We tried everything from 60 FOW to 8 FOW. we ended up with 2 decent browns 1 at 5lbs and 1 at 7lbs and a couple of very small stockers - like 9 inches and 11 inches. The lures they hit were almost half their size. Everything came off the boards in 12 FOW with the usual sticks and spoons. not a single rigger fired for us. It wasnt untill i was returning to the dock that i was told these two gentleman just received word that they would be returning to IRAQ for a third time. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and everyone overseas. If it wasnt for gentlemen like these, we would not be able to enjoy our fantastic fishery and our quality of life.

  3. I recently was given a late 70s Electric Start Mercury 9.8hp outboard. I am thinking about installing this as a kicker. two questions i have are:

    1) Does this motor have a charging system that i can hook up to main batteries?

    2) If no charging system what is the best way to run my electronics

    I am using:

    2-Proos electric downriggers

    1-humminbird depth/fish finder

    1-lowrance GPS unit

    1-VHF radio

I have two batteries installed, and hooked up to a PERKO selector switch.

    ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

  4. I must also agree. The torpedo weights are the way to go. I have tried The Shark while it was hot some days it was dead the next. For the price I would go with the torpedos. I am not convinced it is the atrractant of the weight as much as it is how it runs in the water.

  5. I am runnning an 19' wellcraft cuddy cabin powered by an mercruiser 170hp. My gas mileage has been terrible. I will generally go through 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank fishing in 3-4 hours. I do not have a long run to start fishing nor do i troll great distances. Is this normal for this engine? I was wondering if rebuilding the carb would help improve it at all?

    ANY IDEAS?

    more info that may help:

The boat is a 1986 Wellcraft American 19' Cuddy, not sure of the weight but I know it is HEAVY. IT has a two barrel carb on it and it has the enclosed cooling system with the heat exchanger. at idle it purrs at 650-700 rpm no problem. at WOT it runs around 4000 rpm. I usually run it 1/2 to 3/4 throttle going in and out and when i troll it is running around 900 to 1000 rpm. I am not sure the pitch and size of the prop the boat was new to me last year. it also has the STINGRAY on it to help it plane easier.
