  1. Damn, sorry to hear that. Did you have a water temp reading? Last week it was 47-49 degrees and the fish weren't cooperating. I've heard more guys using spoons (NK 28's) and other smaller stuff lately. Again, my fish last week came on a 3 inch flo red spoon with clear fish scale tape over bottom half of the spoon. The other lure that took fish was a northern King NK 28 Chicken Wing color. Hit fish in 12 feet of water and in 45 feet of water. Just keep at it cause if the fish are there you'll hit them eventually. Remember, the spped last week was 2.5 knots as well.

  2. Well our three days up to Lake Ontario have past and unfortunately this is how it went:

Wednesday- we arrived at Sodus Point to find wind, rain and cold conditions. The lodge was nice but we really didn't get out until about 3p.m. and that was just to take a look at the bay. Was hoping Thursday would be a better day.

Thursday- woke up to the sun shining but still cold and windy. Ventured carefully out to the west in search of browns but the nearshore water was too rough for the 16 footer. Started a long loop back to the inlet and found calmer waters in 100 feet of water. The water temp was in the 40's and we knew we had trouble. Caught one steelie on the top and a very small chinook in 45 feet of water. Ventured in and spent the remainder of the cold day in the bay catching bass and northerns.

Friday- Our last day up at the lake and we were very eager to get out and give it another shot, however, the weather didn't agree with us and we were forced yet again to stay in the bay. The warm, sunny day the weathermen had forecasted developed into a cloudy, windy, cold day. We fought the wind and managed to land a good number of bass and a few pike but it really wasn't what we were looking for.

Saturday- all packed and ready to leave at the crack of dawn and low and behold the sky was sunny and no wind. Would have liked to give it another shot but we had to get on the road. Left sodus Point wondering what if the cold front had held off yet another week. The lodge owner said they had been nailing coho's, browns and steelies right off the inlet. Hopefully, we will get back next year and have the opportunity to get out and catch some of those fish.

This weekend it's back to fishing New Jersey, trying for lakers instead of salmon. I just want to thank everyone here for all the information they provided me. Even though it didn't work out the way I had hoped, the information I have received from the members of this site will surely help in the years to come. Thanks again.

  3. I'm looking to see if someone has a older model 18ft-20ft runabout, cuddy cabin or open style boat and trailer for sale for under $2000. Now the boat I'm looking for is a Great Lakes style boat with fairly deep sides. The boat I'm looking for will support an outboard motor, not an I/O. I realize for the price that I'm looking for a project boat but as long as the transom is solid and the boat does not leak, I can customize the interior if need be.

Basically, I need a slightly larger boat with deeper sides that will be suitable for bigger lakes and Lake Ontario. My girlfriend's father's 16ft Starcraft has lower sides and is just a bit to small to contend with what these larger lakes have to offer. Please contact me if you have something similar to what I'm looking for. Thank you.

  4. I've been reading the anticipated forecast for the Sodus Bay area until Friday and they are calling for temps in the high fifties/low sixties, rain tomorrow, possibly Thursday and winds blowing North, Northwest ranging from 10-25mph. Now these seem like far from ideal conditions in relation to the improving fishing but my question focuses on the wind and its projected direction. Is it safe to assume that if the wind is blowing North, Northwest that the inshore bite would suffer and I should focus my efforts farther offshore?

I must admit that here in NJ, I rarely have paid attention to wind direction in relation to fishing, except when fishing the surf. Highly simplified, I was always led to believe that a wind direction blowing inshore would concentrate bait nearer to the shore, while an offshore wind would push bait farther out. I realize it is more complicated than this, factoring in water temps, but any basic insight on wind direction in relation to such a vast lake would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for everyones help.

  5. Zac was our conrnerback, who had no problem sticking his nose in there and popping a runningback or receiver. Hope he decides to play during high school. Be sure to tell him coach Metz says hello.

  6. I'm curious who your stepson is? I coached with the Ranger Midget squad the past two years. Last year was a tough one but the kids hung in there throughout the season. I'm sure i'll see you around town then.

  7. Well, finally the time has come and my girlfriend's father and I will be making our way up to Sodus on Wednesday. I've tried my best to learn as much as I can before we get there and have been reading the reports. Now with two guys on the boat, and a maximum of four rods to put out, I was wondering if anyone had an idea of a good setup to start with?

It appears, from what I've been reading, that currently there has been some bow/coho action the upper water column out over deeper water so my thought was to start with a two board setup to either side of the boat with a spoon/splitshot combo, one flat line set back approximately 150 to 200 ft with a stickbait and either a dipsey/spoon combo or spoon off the rigger slightly deeper. Would that be putting too many baits in the upper water column? In deeper water, should I always run at least one rod a bit deeper? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I do realize that conditions can and will change from location to location but i am trying to get a general game plan for my initial setup. Thank you.

  8. Can someone please explain what color pattern makes up the Die Hard? And when speaking of Monkey Puke, would that be the orangy gold version or the greenish gold version?

It's funny that some of the same names (Monkey Puke and Kevorkain) appear as different colors depending on manufacturer. Thanks guys.

  9. Hello guys,

Headed up to Sodus Point to fish Lake Ontario for the very first time next week and was just wondering how the action has been? My plan is to troll for browns in the morning and evening and possibly head a little deeper during the day in an attempt to find a king or two. In addition, I'm not ruling out the bay for pike, bass or whatever else wants to hit, if the weather is rough. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  10. Let me start off by saying that I do realize that color selection can change from hour to hour but when fishing the general vacinity around the Sodus Bay area, what are some color patterns that are always good to throw in the mix? Headed up next week and wanted to put a few choice colors in the spread. Thank you.

  11. I was just wondering what is the typical distance is between a #0 Dipsey Diver and and dodger, such as an 8 inch Luhr Jensen dodger? I wanted to try a dodger and fly combo off the dipsey and am comfortable with the distance between the dodger and fly but am unsure about the distance between the dipsey diver and dodger. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you.
