  1. Just out of curiosity. Does a NE/NW wind have the opposite effect on the North shore? I.e. warm water near shore with a NE wind and cold water with a NW?
  2. Don't know the scientific reason why but a NE wind will bring cold water in and a NW wind will bring warm water in. I was out this Saturday and the wind started blowing a little from the NW and in a matter of a couple hours we went from having to fish 90-100 deep to find cold water to over 130ft deep when we left. Wind from any other direction doesn't seem to change the water too much. A west wind seems to keep fishing conditions consistent. The past two years the mid-June through mid July wind patterns had a consistent westernly flow and likewise the fishing was very consistent for us. This year we seem to have much more easternly winds in the mix. For whatever reason, even with a light east wind the fish get lockjaw. I think Tim Bromund had more of a scientific explantion as to why the water changes so much with a NE/NW wind. Hope that helps.
  3. Been fishing the lake seriously for 25 years and the past 5 years have been the best ever for us. I would say 10 years ago was when it was just starting to get good. we have had some record catch rates the past few years according to the DEC. Fall river mouth fishing was spectacular during the late 80's early 90's from mid-August to mid Sept when I first started but pretty tough "numbers-wise" in the Summer. Nowadays the May-August bite has been insane and starts slowing down late August. Not sure why the change from the past but I''m not complaining.
  4. Doesn't matter for lake trout. They seem to always bite
  5. The key is to catch alot of fish so the rods don't stay in the water long enough to collect fleas:) 30lb big game seems to do the trick. I like to check rods after 30-45min if they haven't fired which usually isn't long enough for any major amounts of fleas to collect. This makes it much easier to remove what is there and then reset. I spool all my reels halfway with 20lb test and then use a blood knot to tap in 15 lb test until the fleas show up and then I remove the 15lb and tap in 30lb. I also put a 10 ft leader of 15lb fluoro at the end.
  6. yes. there were some other posts in the "open lake" section about this
  7. It seems logical that the Goby population impacted the SM Bass, but from what I hear about Erie is that the SM Bass has remained good and the bass are larger. Erie also has a large Goby population so I'm not sure what the difference is between the two lakes?
  8. Fleas are bad now. Changed everything over to 30lb this last weekend
  9. Nice. We did a few majors there yesterday as well. Biggest was 26lbs. Also caught more steelhead and skip kings than we could count, and a few teenage kings and even some browns. 300 copper and 10 colors were the MVPs with moon cricket dream weavers. Fish were still biting when we left at noon. Good day. Hopefully conditions will stay stable.
  10. Hmm. Seems browns are all over. We did a few today out over 150-200 FOW off Braddock's.
  11. Did it once a long time ago. I believe it was something like a 25 mile run NW out of the Genny.
  12. Hey Nick, I remember you had once posted a tutorial on changing out the drag on a Tekota 500. Any chance yoy can post that again? Thanks, DR
  13. Perception is reality until the fish hits the floor. A registered scale has kept many a fisherman honest.
  14. Biggest kings for us always seem to come between 11am and noon. Early morning bites can be fast and furious for all species/sizes but once things slow down the big kings are still on the feed. Since the mature kings have larger bellies to fill they will feed well in to the morning. After 9-10am is best during a full moon.
  15. I've heard that the average boat can now get out of Braddocks
  16. For Salmon - Best bets are Wilson/Olcott - May-mid June, Oak mid June end of July. Sandy - mid June - early August. Rochester July-mid Aug, east of Rochester (fairhaven, sodus, oswego, salmon, ect) Aug-Early Sept. General movement from west to east between May and Sept, but but if conditions are stable any port can be on fire, especially from mid-June - Sept. Also, many ports offer very stable fishing for resident brown/laker fishing all year. Also, watch the reports as each year can be different. Last all year ports were hammering kings April-Aug and it didn't matter where you were.
  17. Congrats on your finish. Our hook/land ratio was the worst ever! We worked 350-450 a little west and did not have a problem getting bit. Landing anything was a different story:( Only managed 3 legal fish each day with well over 20 bites on Sat and at least 15 on Sun. Solid hook-ups with fishing taking line and/or jumping and then off! Cores were best but fish would come off as we were bringing them in. Very frustrating. Lots of little kings which was nice to see but didn't help our box. Still had a great time and will be back next year.
  18. Never mind. Just spoke with Mike Waterhouse. Late in getting paperwork out. Pick up at the weigh in line on the first day. 16 in for Sat and 14 for Sun. Should be a good competiton.
  19. I registered online a couple weeks ago and never really recieved any confirmation. Gave my credit card and submitted but didn't recieve a confirmation e-mail or anything. How do you know if you are actually registered? If I remember last year we recieved paperwork in the mail. Thanks, DR
  20. Just an FYI that online registration needs to be done 14 days beofore tourney starts...basically today. If you missed, they will take cash the day before. Hope to see many competitors there! DR
