    Fished from Devils Nose and west. Have no idea how many fish we caught because we caught too many to count with just 4 rods. We caught Kings, Browns, Coho's and Rainbows. Coho's seem to be running a lot smaller this year. That doesn't count fish lost. Had hooks pull out twice on a bomber long-A. :@ Fishing in numbers has never been any better. Just gotta get ahold of the big one and hold onto it. Been staying by myself out of the packs. Seems to work better for me after I get away from the pack. Everythings working, spoons, body baits, dodger & flies. Maybe get out there again another day this week if I'm lucky. Good fishing to all.

    PS we even caught fish and my wife snuck banana's on the boat. I made her eat them.

    Fished from the creek to the water tower. My boat is an 18 1/2 ft Scout. Fishing was tremendous. Every boat I saw was catching fish. Running just 4 rods with my wife. Have no idea how many fish we caught but we caught a ton of them. Caught Kings, Coho's, Steelhead, browns, atlantics and lake trout. Tons of bait - alot of smelt! We had fish on all the time. Had to quit because the wife got tired. We couldn't keep even 3 rods in the water and had lots of doublesl. Everything on body baits - rapalas and reef runners. A lot of the fish were between 3-5 pounds especially the browns. Didn't get pictures because there was no time!! I know everyone did good and I know they're doing good up and down the lake. Can't fish the derby so everyone else have a great derby.

    :yes:

  3. You should be able to fish the Great Lakes without a problem as long as you watch the wind and what direction it's blowing from. I have an 18ft7in Scout and fish Lake Ontario and Lake Erie a lot with no problems. Depending on what Port you fish out of depends how the waves are, if you're at the East or West end of the Lake. You probably don't want to go out if the wind is 10-15 knt's and going with the waves is best to do. Good Luck! You've got a very Seaworthy boat for the Great Lakes. You're coming at the right time. The Salmon fishing is hot.

  4. Took a break from Lake O and went to Erie for Walleye with my wife. Such a great fisherie out of Barcelona Harbor. A lot of boats and everyone was getting fish. Went right out to 120 fow fishing 120-130 ft. Nice mixture of Walleye and Steelhead. Here are pictures of my wife with a nice Steelhead and a Walleye she caught. Didn't have time for any more pictures. Nice Day!! If you haven't gone yet you are missing it.

    Fished from 7:30-11:30. Rods were poppin'. When we went out most people were fishing in close, I went out to 330 ft. We caught fish at 80, 90 and 110 ft deep over 330. Down speed 2.6-3. E chips with tom mixed flies DW SS, giter done, alwife with pink belly and NBK's. Kings, Coho's & Steelhead. Biggest King around 24lbs, Steelhead 10 and under, Coho's 10 and under. Tried to stay in water between 50-54 degrees. 2 of the fish had lampre marks so big I could stick my thumb in them. The area we fished we were all alone, not another boat around. My wife got tired from reeling in fish and hot so we called it a day. Some of the mature Kings turning that bronze color. I'm sure everyone did well up and down the lake. The fishing is just outstanding. If you're not fishing, you're missing it!!

    On the water 6 hours 9-3 first time this year. In a new boat because my old one burnt up in winter storage!! So I'm fishing out of a 187 Scout Dorado. I have to have a small boat because of my handicaps and I trailor every where from Penn Yan and just fish with my wife. Always fishing with just 4 rods.

    Hits: too many to count. Species: Kings, landlocks and steelhead. Probably the best fish landed for species was a 32 inch steelhead, a little more than 14 lbs. Only fish kept, everything else released. A few 3 year old Kings, a few skipper kings. We went out a little further than everyone else. I was fishing 300-350, started my fishing between 50-70 ft down. As the sun came up and the day got later we dropped down to 90-110 ft. I was trying to stay in water temps of 50-54. My down speed was 2.8-3.2 on my Fishhawk X4. Great day and everything worked. Spoons, dreamweaver NBK, Alewife with a pink stripe super slim, protroll with echips, lemon ice was working real well. We lost one beast off the dodger and fly after he took 500 feet of line, 50lb phlorocarbon. In all, it was a great day. Landed a lot of quality fish and lost a few too. Fishing right now is prime. Can't wait to get out again.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

    Fished Sandy on 8/31 with my wife. Because of the water so warm on the inside we shot right out to 350 fow and started trolling out. By the time the 4 rods were set up we had 2 steelhead and 1 breakoff. 400 - 430 fow 80-100 ft down we were doing a good job of catching steelhead and kings but we weren't into good matures. Biggest steelhead 8 lbs, biggest king around 21 lbs. After a couple hours the bite really slowed down. I worked my way into 200 ft fishing 200-180 fow 60-50 ft down we had a triple right away. 2 kings on 1 rod - 1 king on the other rod. My wife thought she had the monster fish of the lake. I usually don't run cheaters when fishing for big kings. The cheater was a 'getter done' spoon running above a white protroll flasher with an echip. Green mirage fly. The king I had on was about 22 lbs on our scale. I got that in first. Both of the ones on my wifes line were well bigger than that. Finally, the cheater one broke off and she got the one on the protroll with echip in. That was 28 lb 4 oz. Alot of excitement at that time. Anyways, we caught more fish than we could count and probably lost about 6. Biggest King was the 28lb 4ozer. Biggest steelhead 8lb 7oz. Great day on the water.

    On 9/1 we went out at the Genny in the afternoon until 7PM. I went right out to 400 fow because of the warm temps on the inside. We found fish right away at 400-430 fow. 90-110 ft down. Steel head and Kings but smaller than what we were getting at Sandy. Just picking at them. So I worked my way inside at 100-120 fow the fish were laying on the bottom. Found temp 54-56 degrees. Picked up a few more fish but nothing over 25 lb's and right off the bottom with spin doctors and protrolls. Just can't seem to find any big ones. The fishing was a lot slower than at Sandy but we did pick away at them, lost a few and caught 8 or 9 (we don't keep count). We'll be going out of the Genny Saturday and Sunday. Also, when we were going out we saw the LOU member in the Key West. He waved to us. I was in the 17 1/2 Alumacraft with the soft top. We were just heading out.

    Hope everyone does well this weekend. Maybe we'll see you on the water.

  8. Mark, I wasn't talking to you a couple weeks ago on the radio although I have talked to you in the past. I live in Penn Yan by Keuka lake now so I don't keep my boat on Ontario anymore. When I come to the Lake I usually go out at the River or Sandy Creek. I used to have a 31 ft Sportcraft then I went down to a 25 ft. The last 7 years I've been fishing out a 17 1/2 Alumacraft Trophy with a 90 Honda. My wife and dog are my fishing partners. I've had to downsize due to disability.

    I thought you would know where the big fish are..I can't seem to get anything over 20lb. I've been getting my bigger fish off shore 400-500 fow. I'm catching fish 120-160 but nothing big, everything 10 lb and under. I've been getting them on the dipsy's and the riggers. Protroll with an echip and spin doctors are working really well for me, just can't get a big fish. Also Michigan Stingers Alwifes and NK Alwifes working good.

    Good luck the rest of the derby. I'm going to try to get out tomorrow, weather permitting.

  9. Hey Tom, when I go to the Genny that early I'm usually the only one there. It was good to meet you. I enjoy meeting the good guys from this board. Sorry I wasn't thinking, I didn't introduce you to my wife. She's my best fishing partner. Anyways, we started at 80 feet. I was setting up and we pulled a double that made a mess. 1 was a landlock and 1 a rainbow. Released the landlock - 22 inches. We moved on because I wasn't getting the quality fish since we're in the derby. Trying to get away from those 3,4 & 5 pounders. We went with the waves because it's easier for my wife to steer. I was using the protroll with an echip on one rigger and a spin doctor on the other. We got 2 good hits on them right away. The fish ran for awhile and got off. We continued down the lake. All the fish were small as we worked our way out to 220 fow going East. I found pockets of 48 degree water with fish in them but they weren't the fish I was looking for either. Anyway, we kept going East and picking at them staying in the 48 degree water and got nothing over 10 lbs. I usually have better luck picking up the Kings in that water but they just weren't where I was. We ended up past 9 mile point, so I thought the way the fishing was going and we were just getting small ones we picked up and made the long haul back to the river at 1:00. In all not a bad day but we just couldn't pop a big one. I stayed in 120-160 fow mostly with water temps 48-50 degrees with 100-115 ft of cable out. Fish on the divers came at 175 & 225. I was using NK alwafe's one them. We got back to the Genny at 2:30. Caught lots of fish, not sure how many, I am sure we lost 4. We'll be out again Fri., Sat. & Sunday, weather permitting. It was great meeting you. Anytime you want to talk give me a shout. I have 45 years of experience on the lake so I'm not a newbie. Hope to see and talk to you again. I enjoy your post on this site. I think you're one of the people who keep this post going. Pleasure meeting you.

  10. Good Job Mark. Can't wait to hear the details. We're not fishing today but my wife and I will be out Monday. We were out Saturday and we smacked them pretty hard, my wife and I, Steelhead, Kings and 1 Atlantic. I lost one decent fish after it took out 500 ft of line. I have no idea what it was. As you know, a 20lb'er can do that. Good to see you have that Familiar Bite working for you and good luck during the rest of the derby.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

    Saturday morning from 5:30 to 11 - first report in quite awhile. Fished Sandy with my wife and dog Max. We ended up going 22 for 28 all fish released. We caught browns, Kings and steelhead and one lamprey eel on a green crinkle fly. It actually hit it the hooks were in the mouth. Made sure it went back in the lake in pieces. No pictures because all fish released. This time of year when released I don't bring them in the boat. I unhook behind the boat, they have a better chance of survival. Fish came on NK's, NBK's, black and raspberry with a white back and spooks. 2 kings were matures - low 20's probably. Biggest steelhead probably 10, biggest brown probably 6lbs with a few cookie cutters mixed in. Everything working - dipseys 150-220 ft out. Riggers - 60-80 down. Quite a few fish came off the cheaters. Down speed 2.2-2.5, temps tried to stay in 50-53 degrees. Fishing was fast and furious. Couldn't keep 4 rods in the water. Most of the time just 2 or 3. Fishing doesn't get any better than it's been the past few days. Hope everybody in the LOU has a good fall LOC derby.

  12. I'm fishing the LOC for the first time in 10 years and fishing Lake Ontario for the first time this year due to health with my wife and my dog, Max. We were out at 5 AM and went out to 120 feet. Worked between 120-130 and getting good marks. We were getting steelhead and kings. My wife got a lake trout too. We didn't keep count and got nothing too big. Biggest steelhead was around 9lbs and biggest king around 23. Took nothing to a weigh station because I knew it wasn't big enough and wouldn't hold up. We even had a nice double on kings. We did ok for our first time out. Our best set up for kings was spin doctor with a green mirrage fly and NK's black and rashberry. We only fished until 11AM because we couldn't be bounced around anymore in my 17 1/2 ft Alumacraft. We hope to get out again this week as long as I'm feeling alright.

    Good luck to every one.

  13. Haven't gotten out fishing this year because of health as much as I'd like to. Made it to Barcelona at the end of July for a day. People just don't realize how great the fishing is there. Catching nice Walleye and Steelhead at the same time all on Michigan Stingers, 100-120 fow 50-60 feet down. People just don't realize what a trophy fishery we have here in Lake Erie from Dunkirk to Barcelona. Between Lake Erie and the great trout and salmon fishing in Lake Ontario, why do Western NY'ers have to go anywhere else? Here are a couple of pictures of a Walleye and a Steelhead that my wife caught. Hope to get back there soon. I live in Penn Yan so it's a long drive for us but well worth it!! Max, our dog, thinks so too.

    We'll be on Ontario the next few weeks for the big guys.

  14. John, it's really great that you would invite me to go fishing with you now. I had treatments at Strong Hosp. yesterday so I won't go out fishing for a while now. And, my son in the Marines is home from Iraq and in NC. If possible we'll go there to see him, his wife and my grandson. Our other son should be home from Iraq in 1 or 2 weeks so I think my fishing is pretty well shot for this month. But, I would like to go out fishing with you. I've been fishing the lake for 40 years and I'm sure we could teach each other a few things. Good luck with the combat fishing. I know it'll be crowded this weekend. If they stop hitting try going out to deeper water for the steelhead and 2-3 yr old Kings. They're a blast. When I'm trolling in the river I troll 5 ft down with a 40 ft lead, 10 ft down with a 30 ft lead, 15 ft down with a 20 ft lead (sometimes 15). I've cought them with 10 ft leads 10-15 ft down in between the piers in the river. Good luck and I'll try to catch up with you another time.

  15. Motoman - this time of year I run j plugs all the time. Just j plugs if I'm fishing by myself I fish 2, if I'm fishing with someone I fish 4. J plugs I like best are the old jointed ones. I don't have many left though. Also, perch colored silver hords with a black ladder back work well. I catch a lot of fish on j plugs. I start running them around the end of July. From July on I always have at least one j plug in the water. Good work! I don't know if I'll be combat fishing this year since my trailor got hit in the parking lot AGAIN at the Genny. Getting kind of expensive!! Good Luck.

  16. Got out in the morning by myself. Went out deep fishing 480-520. Fishing was great. Kings, Cohos and steelhead. Got a couple of pics. Not very good because I was by myself and it's kind of hard to take a picture and hold the rod at the same time. I don't know how many I caught because I don't keep track but I couldn't keep 2 rods in the water and I had 3 doubles. NK monkey puke was working best. I ran all spoons - more hits on spoons. I run one downrigger and one diver when I'm alone. Diver was 90-115 ft of line was on a #2 setting and was taking fish too. Here's a couple of pics from yesterday

  17. I haven't gone fishing since we were out on the 19th. Since then the wind and storms have busted the temperatures up in LO. The temps are coming back little by little. The best fishing is still out deep 500-550 feet. More big ones are coming from out there. As the water warms up the salmon are going to start coming in. Pretty soon water temps won't mean that much. If the water is below 50 degrees on top, go North until it warms up. That should put you on fish. I don't get out that much but it was good to hear from someone. I'm going to try to get out Sunday, weather permitting. Not sure if I'm going to fish off Sandy or Rochester. I also hear they're not doing bad off Braddocks Bay. Good Fishing, maybe I'll see you on the water.

  18. Don't get to do as much fishing on the big pond as I like because of my disability. I have fished LO for over 40 years and I've never seen it fish better. The size of the kings might be a little smaller than in the glory years but the numbers are fantastic. My wife and my dog Max and I fished between 500 & 550 feet all morning. Like I've said in the past, we don't keep track of how many we catch but they were all Kings. I did keep track of the biggest ones. We had 5 between 35 & 40 inches plus a bunch of smaller ones. That doesn't count we had at least 4 break offs. The fish we caught on the down riggers came with 80-110 ft of cable out running spin doctors and flies. The fish off the dipsies I was running split J-plugs, one silver bullet, one perch - both were taking fish. 180-220 ft of line out. Temps were bouncing all over but I found a pocket to fish where it was 43-47 degrees. That's where my biggest Kings came from. We couldn't even keep 4 rods in the water. Great Day & Fishing is Awesome!! Hopefully, I'll be able to get back again before the year is over. All fish were clean with no lamprey marks. Speed 2.2-2.5 on my Moore subtroll. Good luck to every one in the LOC. We don't fish derbies because we never know how I'm going to feel. They're out there. You just have to go get them and have a little luck on your side. :D

  19. My wife, my dog Max and I made it out to Hamin today. Nice West wind. Another good day of fishing. Nice steady pick. We don't keep track but we caught a lot. We quit at 10 AM because we were tired. Mostly browns, dropped a couple too. 5-20 fow using side planers, junior thunder sticks, downriggers DW spoons and double orange crush NK. Downriggers were set 3-5 feet. We've been very lucky this year. The fishing has been awesome and we've been crushing them. All the fish we caught were clean - no lamprey. The Kings haven't really moved in yet. Most of them must be on the Canadian side yet. Kings few and far between. We live on Keuka Lake so we don't get to the big pond as often as I used to. The fishing is awesome and it should be a good derby. Good Luck to all. :lol:

  20. Started fishing at 9:30 with my wife and my dog, Max. Fished Webster Park to Hedges. We don't keep track of how many we catch but lets just say we caught so many our arms were sore. Fishing has never been better. Mostly Browns. Out of all the fish only one was hit by a lamprey. Also got a Landlock and we lost a nice King. Lures used were fire tiger rapelas, X-raps chartuse body and red nose, spoons, michigan stingers - orange crush. Most fish came 10-5 fow. Lots of doubles and had to quit because my wife's arms were sore. Fish averaged 2-5 lbs and one was about 8 lbs. I've fished the lake for 40 years and it doesn't get any better than what it is now. Get out there and get them because it's great fishing. We fished sideplaners and downriggers set 3-5 feet down (long line downriggers). :D
