  1. because I had to change batteries on a couple of my dead cameras I sat in one my tree stands without even my bow because I wasn't going to shoot anything anyways and don't have a buck tag. in the last hour I seen 3 different bucks I would of shot and it was just crazy with deer.  that's the benefits of filling your tag early. I have 6 tree stands on my 56 acres and by now there usually all blown out. it's amazing what just a little bit of pressure of will do on a hunting property.  I also have 5 cameras which I leave out all year and its always the same time frame when they go nocturnal especially the bigger ones. tonight truly amazed me. with the current weather/snow conditions I would bet this to be a record year for opening weekend or close to it..

My dog n I tracked for 12 years, (she passed this year) I am looking for a new dog and the blue lacy is on the list! Rage tracks ended up mostly not found, aka still alive. If shot thru the guts they die but give them 12 hours. Really sharp n the best penetration you can have that is the key to lethal shots.. not a huge entry hole, two holes to drian the swamp!! Lol

another vote for the G5 striker. it's a very rare occasion I don't get a pass through and was a little shocked... and disappointed when I didn't this year.

Off since Sunday, hunted every day and haven’t seen much. This buck came running through at seven and hung up north of me. I grunted and can called at him and he looped around back behind me. I could hear him grunting so I kept grunting back. He came quartering towards me at thirty and I drew back.
I stopped him but didn’t have a shot. He moved forward and I stopped him again.
Sharp quartering away angle, aimed just ahead of his hip. Quick shot.
Let him sit an hour and went to look.
Not a ton of blood at first but found two thirds of the shaft and tip and a little further up the rest of the shaft and fletching. They looked great and shortly thereafter we found the deer.
Certainly not a giant but I’m pumped to get him. Have worked hard the last six days and am looking forward to a couple days off before heading back to work.
Good luck everyone, awesome time of year!IMG_0767.JPGIMG_0765.JPG

looks like a bunch of nice deer taken. congrats to everyone. my arrow snapped also. about 7 inches back. saw it fly off to the side and it was such a loud crack I thought I buried it into his shoulder blade and broke at the broadhead screw. 12 yards. could see it on the ground but not good enough to know how much was gone. wasn't feeling too good. fortunately he tried to cross the bean field to make it to the thick cover where they like to bed and I saw him drop about a 100 yards out. if he went the other way it would have been into standing corn and there was no blood trail. the broken piece was laying across the chess cavity and went thru the heart. ended up making a slice and pushed it out the other side. I think he snapped it when he kicked back with his right leg. beautiful day to be out there. good luck everyone

First sit of the season, and I could have taken a slammer buck.  I didn't even pick up my bow.  If I had, I think I might have shot him, because I probably couldn't have stopped myself.  But i decided before I went out yesterday that there was no way I was shooting a buck this early and moping around the rest of the season.  I know, I'm crazy.  I could have been fishing, duck hunting, shooting does.  And I would have gone through the fall feeling a certain lack.  There's something about the focus and intensity in late October when the rut kicks in and you're on edge knowing any moment could be THE moment that I can't get doing all those other things.  I'd be giving that up by poking a random stud that wandered across my set early.  I was up in the middle of the night wondering if I'd screwed the pooch, but I'm okay with my decision this morning.  At least it wasn't work keeping me up lol. Time to go hunting!

hey gator.. I know what you mean....I burned my buck tag on oct. 4 on one of our local lake Ontario lunkers.  haven't been on here in awhile but remember meeting you a few times when fishing with my friend jim (pequad)  its been not quite as much fun sitting around as much with the just the doe but I have anyways because I just enjoy being out so much anyways. but definitely haven't been out nearly as much if I still had my tag.thought I would check out the site and read all 37 pages of the thread.lol..felt like a lurker lol. I don't know how to post pics but a friend on said he would do it for me. good luck.

  7. was there yesterday. as said tons of dinks.kept a dozen for a meal.mostly 8 inchers. had 4 between 9 and 12 inches.went to sliders and spikes because got tired of baiting fatheads. same thing one after another. didn't matter where I went.still a beautiful day to be out and got a nice meal.

  8. i guess it wasn't me. I have 56 acres in the parma/Hilton area and went out Thursday morning for the opener as usual. only heard one gobbler on the roost and for about an hour longer. then bang, and my neighbor probably got him. after that only saw 2 hens. the worst I have seen it in over 10 yrs. thought maybe it was the tough winter or coyote problem. saw plenty of turkeys last fall but a unusual amount of coyotes also while deer hunting. was out sunday evening checking things out and saw only 4 turkeys 3 hens and the tom that probably was shot in one group. the thing is I also counted 17 deer, the most I have ever counted on the property at one time. so the bad winter/coyotes   didn't hurt them any. I don't get it but do know they aren't on that block as usual. I've never got skunked for the may season but am not very confident this yr.

  9. and for the record i say let them all end. the recreational fisherman have been nothing but screwed by all these tournaments. i don't believe the fishery was started to be this devisive and commercialized. everyone is into their own agenda and mostly for their own profit or selfish gain.when these things end is when we will see 40 lb'ers caught again.

  10. i think you had the right idea rodbuster. the lake didn't get any bigger. yes it was warmer. i guess it was just the kings that stopped feeding earlier. how about last yr. when the summer derby winner was about 6 lbs. bigger than the fall winner? i can't wait to hear next yrs. excuses. it will probably be bush's fault..lol...of course it won't have to do with all the fishing pressure. (tournaments).

  11. i agree. the east end events seem to be more fishing/tourney friendly to the weekend warriors and smaller boats. i live 5 minutes from the lake on the west end. i must admit to have gotten lazy to traveling much for salmon fishing. i wish there were more tourneys down this way like atomic tom puts on out that way. nice job..tom  ..that aside i hope the open division of the pro/ams takes off. would like to fish a few but need another hour or two to fish. probably would have to wrap it up by 10 or 10:30 to make it back to the launch, load and trailer to the weigh station...if everything goes well.

  12. the g.f. and myself would definately be interested but without knowing at least the basics of the rules it would be hard to say for sure. i've posted on here numerous of times before over the yrs about smaller boats being at a disadvantage and the obstacles that an observer along with the additional cost would present to us. in a 19.5 ft. boat it just wouldn't be feasable for us. i understand the need for them but still have to look at the bottom line on whether it is worth competing or not. we have already discussed fishing the open division of the pro am this yr. if the participation were to increase which other than the short fishing hours was the reason we didn't in the past. that format suits us well and if this endeavor was to take place we would be happy to fish both. but without knowing the format it would be just impossible to give a go or not. i am curious to know however what would constitute a pro if this were to be a am. event only. would it be anyone with a captains license or would those that don't actively charter be included to fish.

  13. Scott and the boys....Great time last year, and the fishing was smoking. Already making plans for this year.....Anyone who is on the fence about fishing this event your really look hard at it.....No theatrics or chest pounding that can happen in the bigger tourneys. Glad that you guys are getting the word out so early, and I hope that you guys keep it a Sandy Creek only tournament. I certainly don't mind running the rig down for the weekend........Keep us posted on developments

blah, blah, blah....LOL......just kiddin with ya..

  14. Dave Chilson has to do what is in the best interest of the derby to keep cheating out. If you don't like the rules, start your own derby and see how easy it is to make everyone happy and keep cheating to a minimum.

lol.. brian.....lets not get into this start your own derby thing again.....and i wonder when the last time was dave ever spent the bucks for a polygragh. let's be real.

  15. Our team would like to put in a protest for no prizes given to the biggest Lake Trout. Every other cold water species had a "special" prize. Its like you Sandy guys have no respect for such a wonderful species. That alone may keep us from fishing other Sandy events until the prestigiouness of the Lake Trout is brought back.

LOL...just kidding..im gonna take a beating over this fish......

On behalf of the Yankee Troller tourney team we would like to thank the tourney committee and volunteers. This was a fun event, and seeing a lot of the LOU members was a bonus. Cant wait for next year.

P.S. In the next 12 months please get your misquito population in check.

i agree ...i think if we put in a protest now we could a rule change for next yr. :) ..but then again how much did that fish help you get the 2n'd place finish ?...congrats to all the participants and next yr. i will be there one way or the other. :)

on a side note i think the commitee should think about awarding a donuts prize. after all if someone drives 280 miles to fish the event....thats the least you can do...
