  1. This photo was taken today, Thursday, October 24.  The one lane bridge is finally coming down!!

I know our marina is farther from the mouth but our prices our lower and it might be more convenient for your charter customers too, especially since they can also lodge here, if they like motel-style lodging.  So, think about keeping your boat here at Captain's Cove next season!

  2. I have some inventory that I really don't want sitting in the shop all winter, so I am now listing selected items on ebay.  Some ot the items are listed as auction, some are buy it now, and some are best offer.  Most have free shipping (and no tax if outside New York State).

Fish Hawk's Breakaway Cannon Ball Safety Cable is designed to go between your cannon ball and your Fish Hawk Probe. Most rigger cables are 150lb, this lead pulls apart approximately 70lb – meaning that if you snag on the bottom (oops!) the lead will break and you will get your probe back!

Check it out and thanks for looking!!  Or forward it to your loved ones as a suggested Christmas/Hanukkah gift:

  3. Dear John,

We are going to miss you more than I can adequately express.  It was very thoughtful of you to mention Captain's Cove and Claude and me by name. How could we not "bend over backwards to accommodate your crazy ass with a room every weekend..."? (Some weekends you were our only motel customer.)  And, you never failed to buy something (usually a lot of somethings) in the tackle shop.  We may actually show a profit this year, thanks in large part to you and the guests you often brought with you or to the tackle recommendations you provided when talking with other shop customers.

We completely agree with Tim's statement that "I don't know anyone crazier than you when it comes to fishing."  There were many nights when we'd close up the tackle shop and go home and I would have trouble sleeping knowing you were still out on the Lake or navigating the shallow parts of the Oak (in the dark).  I think I even had a nightmare once that you cut yourself cleaning fish in our dimly lit fish cleaning station which we would leave open for you.

I hope our paths cross again and if you ever need anything, please just ask.

P.S.  Claude says if your "Kelley's Club" becomes a collector's item, he wants 50%.

I hope our paths cross again.  Please keep in touch.

  5. Attached please find a letter from Okuma stating..."there may be isolated issues with Cold Water reels directly related to the clutch cam...there is a potential that the clutch cam screw could back out, preventing the reel from disengaging back to free-spool".

Okuma says the fix is simple - requiring the addition of a washer under the clutch cam screw and the application of Lock-Tite.   Okuma will provide the washer, replacement screw and simple step-by-step instructions.

For more information, see the attached letter.

As always, if we can help, give us a call.

  6. I don't have an explanation except that in another forum, there was a string of posts similiar to this back in 2006 and here's a summary:

Officials say a disease might be killing an invasive species of fish in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The GLRC’s David Sommerstein reports.

Where the lake and the river meet, people have been finding dead round gobies.

“Dozens in some cases, hundreds of dead gobies that have been washing up on shores.â€

Steve Litwiler is with New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. He says a change in water temperature or a poison could cause the die-off, but initial sampling suggests some kind of disease.

“Is it a disease that could potentially affect other fish? Fortunately right now the only fish that are dying appear to be the round gobies.â€

If only the round gobies die, this could be a good news story. Round gobies hitched a ride from Europe in the ballast of foreign freighters. They’ve displaced native species across the Great Lakes

Also, just fyi according to the NYSDEC website:

What to do if you find sick/dead fish

If you witness a large number of dead or dying fish (usually 100 or more), please contact the nearest DEC regional office and ask for the Bureau of Fisheries. Questions about VHS and potential DEC actions to prevent its spread can be e-mailed to [email protected] or by calling 518-402-8896. The public is also advised to regularly check the Department website for updated information on VHS in New York State.

  7. Helllo everyone,

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that our tackle shop will be open limited hours during the Orleans County Pro-Am weekend, June 7-9, 2013.  We have to attend a family event in St. Louis, Missouri the same week-end as the Pro-Am.

So, the shop will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm.  Sorry for the inconvenience but hopefully, if you need something, you can plan ahead, or at least you'll be off the water by then and can get to the shop before it closes.

Please also note: if you want tickets for the 5th annual Condor 3 Fish Tournament to be held on Friday, June 7th, you must purchase your tickets before 7 am the day of the event.  If you can't buy your tickets ahead of time at Captain's Cove, tickets will also be available at Four C's, Lake Breeze and Narbys.

Good luck to all the teams!

  8. YNN is coming to Point Breeze tomorrow Tuesday, April 30 to do an on camera interview.  Keep your fingers crossed, right now we are still in 3rd place:  Cape Hatteras 11,998, Grand Lake CO 10,042, and Point Breeze with 9,511.

Mike Waterhouse, our county's sportsfishing coordinator will be meeting the YNN reporter, Rose, here at that time and I'm sure they'll travel up to the Point and shoot some video. I don't know if she'll want to talk with any Charter Captains but she will be at Captain's Cove at 11:30 am so if you're interested feel free to come "hang out"!

  10. While not recent news, I just learned about this from Make the Turn and then I spoke with Mike, a NYS DEC biologist.  So, I thought I would share the information.  Sean Youngblood started a discussion here on LOU about the DEC stocking Lake Herring in December 2012:

    http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/index.php/topic/33865-dec-press-release-from-122012-lake-herring-stocking-lake-o/?hl=%2Blake+%2Bherring

But also, a month earlier, the DEC also started stocking the "bloater" fish, ..."a deepwater cisco...bringing the fish back to the lake for the first time in nearly thirty years...Re-introducing bloaters will provide more food choices for predators, such as lake trout and salmon, and diversify the Lake Ontario fish community. Lake trout and salmon that feed primarily on alewife can experience reproductive failure due to a vitamin B deficiency. Predators that feed on native species like bloater are less likely to experience reproductive failure...Re-establishing deepwater ciscoes in the lake will reduce opportunities for new invasive species to colonize the offshore, deepwater zone and fill the niche that bloaters are most suited to fill."

To read more about it, see the NYS DEC press release:
