  1. In a press release, dated February 16, 2012 NYSDEC announced proposed changes to various sections of their freshwater fishing regulations. Here is a link to the press release which will provide a summary of the proposed regulations as well as information on how to comment: http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/80412.html

The changes being proposed cover: walleye, black bass, trout and salmon, pickerel, muskellunge and tiger muskellunge, ice fishing and baitfish, and gear and angling methods.

It is always helpful to send supporting comments if you agree with their changes. For example they are proposing to change the minimum length for salmonids in the Upper Niagara River to "any size" because the current 12-inch minimum length is no longer necessary and this will also eliminate the need for special tributary regulations. This seems like a good change to me.

On the other hand, they are also proposing to "Reduce the limit of rainbow trout from five to one in the western Finger Lakes and three to one in the tributaries to provide further protection for this species. Western Finger Lakes include Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Canadice, and Hemlock Lakes." Is it reasonable to go from 5 to 1 in the Lakes and 3 to 1 in the tributaries? If not, you can maybe help to make the regulations better by saying why you disagree and give them alternate suggestions.

Also, if you can submit comments as a Charter Captain's association or fishing club such as LOTSA or FLTA, that helps since you're representing a larger number of people.

Comments will be accepted through April 2, 2012. These regulations, if adopted as proposed with no subsequent changes, will be in effect for the 2012-2013 license year, which begins on October 1, 2012. If there is anything you think I can do to help, please let me know. I would be happy to prepare comments for your group of your association if you would find that helpful.

  2. For information: The NYS DOT closed the one-lane bridge that runs over the Oak Orchard River between the Rt. 98 and Rt. 18 bridges. Orleans County is now conducting a study to determine what to do next. The County Hwy department does not yet know when the study results will be available.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of different opinions about what to do. I've pasted links to 2 recent newspaper articles below:

  3. Almost a year ago, we decided to no longer carry Michigan Stinger spoons in our tackle shop and we posted an LOU notice explaining we were offering regular size Michigan Stinger spoons for $3 each and Stingrays for $4 each. Throughout all last year, we sold a lot of spoons but we still have quite a few left. Many of those left have been discontinued or are hard to find.

The regular (3/4†x 3†inch) spoons are still only $3 each and the mags and Stingrays are only $4 each but this time tax and shipping are included.

I will hold these spoons for you, or ship them. You can pay with PayPal or call me with your credit card.

The last number in each row after the = sign is the quantity left

Thanks for looking and for supporting your local tackle shops. And please note you will still find, in our tackle shop, an awesome selection of spoons by well known and respected manufacturers such as Dreamweaver, Moonshine, Northern King, Wolverine, Yeck and more.

  7. I don't want to hold onto this unit all winter so it is priced to move at only $399. You will need to pay tax if you live in NY but no tax if shipped out of state. You will also have to pay the shipping which is estimated to be an additional $12.

  10. Paul's customers also happened to be motel guests at Captain's Cove and they were kind enough to send me some photos as well. I took a few hours off last Sunday to attend my niece's bridal shower and they brought the fish back with them to clean it in preparation for mounting it. On our Derby scale, it weighed 41 pounds 12 ounces. I wish I had been here to see it in person, but they shared their cell phone photos with me. I have attached one of those photos for you here and you can see Mike struggling to hold it.

  12. The Buffalo office of the National Weather Service will be conducting a SKYWARN spotter

training seminar in Albion, at the Orleans County Health Department – 14012 Route 31 West, on Wednesday April 27 at 7:00PM. The training session is sponsored by the Orleans County Health Department and will last about two hours. There is no cost for the training.

SKYWARN is a national effort to save lives during severe weather emergencies with an

expanding network of trained volunteer weather spotters. SKYWARN spotters support their local community and government by providing reports of severe weather directly to the National Weather Service in Buffalo through amateur radio or by phone using the the NWS spotter hotline. The services performed by SKYWARN spotters have saved many lives.

The National Weather Service has a number of devices for detecting severe thunderstorms. Included in these are Doppler radar, satellite, and lightning detection networks. However, the most important tool for observing thunderstorms is the trained eye of the storm spotter. By providing observations, SKYWARN spotters assist National Weather Service staff in their warning decisions and enable the National Weather Service to fulfill its mission of protecting life and property. Storm spotters are, and always will be, an indispensable part of the severe local storm warning program.

The basic training session provides a brief overview of the National Weather Service

organization and our responsibilities, severe weather safety, and basic severe weather

meteorology including how thunderstorms, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes form.

Anyone can become a severe weather spotter for the National Weather Service. SKYWARN training is free and open to the public.

For further information, you can call the National Weather Service at (716) 565-0204 ext. 223 or the Orleans County Health Department at (585) 589-3251.

More information about SKYWARN is available on the NWS Buffalo website at

  13. Thank you for checking the store tab on our website. It is being changed to say "Our online store is down. We stock over 4,000 items and can special order just about anything. Please call or email us for more information (and there will be a link to the contact us page)."

As for colors and photos, it is simply too difficult to post and maintain an inventory since people are coming into the store and buying the merchandise so any listing I create will be out of date as soon as I compile the list. You can see colors and photos at other online tackle store websites. If you see a particular spoon or flasher that you like, I would be happy to tell you if I have any left in stock.

    Thanks for asking.

  14. Captain's Cove is now offering our remaining inventory of Michigan Stinger spoons, EChip flashers and Pro-Troll EChip flashers at rock bottom prices. We have chosen to no longer carry these brands in our tackle shop. We are selling regular size Michigan Stinger spoons for $3 each, Stingray and Mags for $4 each, and EChip and Pro-Troll EChip flashers for $7 each.

You will still find, in our tackle shop, an awesome selection of spoons and flashers by well known and respected manufacturers such as Dreamweaver, Moonshine, Northern King, Yeck and more.

We will happily ship product to you but shipping and handling is extra and tax is necessary if shipping to a NY location.
