  1. What is the make and model of the boat?  What is age and what is main engine?  If two people on opposite side don’t take out lean then you might have waterlogged transom/ flotation foam.  Redistributing weight is a good start, but seems like you might have more going on.

  2. Bsmith welcome to LOU.  Pretty big question for your 1st post.  My advice do some online work on budgeting and business plans.  Do you have any retail sales or marketing knowledge?  You’ll need online presence and financial tools.  How long have you sat on your license?  If you’re 1st aid CPR is outdated that’s 2 years.  You might need to retest?  Charter insurance is not cheap- mine has jumped last couple years.  My advice-get some business knowledge before you jump in.  Lots of expense and hard work-can be rewarding for some.  I was told by an old captain when I started “guys come and go in this business so we wait to see if you’re going to make it “. Work on the business skills.  Lots of guys can run boats and fish.

  3. Slide Diver sold that as “Ultimate Ring and Weight” kit.  You replace bottom of diver and ring plus the 7 oz weight.  Noticeable difference as about twice the weight of standard weight.  Works well- I like the versatility of slide divers and ability to change leader lengths.  Not sure how available slide divers are currently as some changes to ownership.

  4. What type of drive and cooling system makes a difference.  Old i/o from salt- no.  Outboard maybe- you can repower.  IMO a freshwater boat is worth more than a saltwater boat most of the time.  There is a reason you don’t see old boats in Florida.

  5. The early Mag 10’s had a right angle gear drive with three plastic pucks that would disintegrate when heavier weights were used.  Motor wouldn’t fail the drive would and when it did you had free fall.  Back in the 70’s and 80’s when those were designed guys were using 6,8 and some 10lb weights.  Motor and drive were one sealed unit-parts not available in years.  Upgrading would require motor and drive system redo.

  8. To answer Hondo’s original question of it being common practice of captain and mate keeping fish to add to client’s limit, the answer is “No”.  I have kept the odd fish here or there when you have fish that can’t be released pulling lines or for some odd occurrences.  That would be a fish here or there over a season and certainly out of the realm of “common practice”.  When asked by clients, I just say No and that usually is the end of that conversation.

  9. Doesn’t seem like you should have to be tinkering around with a new boat setup.  I took delivery on a new boat last year and the dealer had me meet with them to do service write up on rigging, and then when  I took delivery sales manager went over boat with me from one end to the other.  I do most of my own rigging especially electronics but had them do on board charger, transom transducer mount, and kicker setup.  The dealer sold a pretty good number of fishing boats and it showed in how they did rigging and delivery.  Hope you get the bugs worked out so you enjoy the outfit.

  10. Looks like a Panther Marine steering kit.  If it was mine on a new boat, I would be talking with the rigger.  IMO the bolts for the steering adapter on the kicker should be tight.  When I’ve used Panther mounts I put the ball stud on the top to give more splash well clearance and also take rod off when not trolling so I ratchet strap kicker when in travel position.  Looks like you have auxiliary controls which make install tight and complicates steering linkage.  I wouldn’t be happy with the scratches in the splash well.  I’d be looking to run rod different even if it meant fabricating a new mount rather than the universal one in the kit.

  11. On line marine distributors like Jamestown Distributors have videos on various repairs plus sell the items.  West Systems has videos as well.  IMO these are better sources vs a YouTube search as it separates some hacks.  Using the right materials at right temperatures is important with fiberglass repairs.  Certainly a DIY repair with the right products.
