  1. Hey Rusty -

    - Do you feel like it's underpowered at all with the 115?

    - Does it have the rear jumpseats included?

    - How many seats come with it?

    - Does it have a VHF or any other electronics that aren't listed?

    - Does the trailer have surge brakes (it looks like it does)?

    Thanks!

    Matt

  2. Sure Matt - The total thing is 42 inches long and the Bosch 1/2 inch hammer drill is the key to it...I tried a Makita, Black and Decker, De Walt  etc. They all failed to do the job. The Bosch is an animal it could pull you into the hole if you're not careful   It is probably the best investment in anything in my whole life. It has had about 5 years use and the batteries are still going strong. I think the conversion kit was about $30 about 5 yrs ago.  I think the hammer drill was about $300 plus and I just used the bottom of a 7 inch Lazer auger for the rest.  I wouldn't go bigger than a7 inch blade though.

Nice!!! I don't do a lot of ice fishing, so I was looking for something quick and easy that doesn't take a lot of room to store. Thanks for posting pics.

  3. I gave my power auger away to a friend several years ago. I have been using a Bosch Hammer Drill with a conversion kit (use the bottom half of a 7 inch lazer auger with it ) with lithium batteries and as long as you aren't fishing in places with 3 ft of ice I have drilled over 50 holes in 6 inch ice on one battery and no messing with gas, no fumes, no noise, environmentally friendly, lighter to carry etc. The batteries are rechargeable and come with a quick charger. You set the drill for high torque rather than high speed.

Les - If possible, could you please post a picture of your setup, or a link to the bit that you use?

    Thanks!

  4. Looking for a tandem canoe in decent shape. I Prefer a 16' class royalex/fiberglass/kevlar but will consider aluminum if it's not a tank since I will need to carry/portage. Let me know what you have and we can talk price.

If you have one, are in the rochester area, and would rather just let me borrow/rent, that would be very classy of you.

    Thanks!

  5. I tie  my  own cod rig  with 30lb big game  3 hook set up   so the lower hook   is right on the bottom. Also   try  hitting  the bait  with pure   oil of anise    I have seen times at Platts  where it turns the fish right on

Thanks for your reply. How high is your highest hook off the bottom? I like the anise tip. I've heard that people use anise for catfish and carp as well.

I did not tie it to the hook itself. While making the rig I used to slip a bit of orange rubber from a teaser around the line and then stick the little light stick in. You can get them at K-mart.

By the way, where are your teasers?

I just ordered 100 of them on ebay for $15. I'll try some salmon fishing this summer as well. I have seen rigs with teasers on them, just orange surgical tubing cut at an angle - right? I have mostly seen these on jigs. Please educate me.

twenty years ago my mom and dad were cod fishing stellwagen bank.  Jigging with 36oz norwegian jigs and my dad caught "bottom".  Bottom started to move.  Ended up with a 136lb Halibut.  Had a hell of a time getting it in the boat.  Used to love the early season fishing growing up in Mass.  Big cod, Wolffish, Mackeral etc.  Fond memories.

That has got to be the largest jig I have heard of being fished! Great story and definitely something I will be thinking about while on the trip! Thank you.

"Thanks. I can't get his version of the snell to work. He does this thing where he puts the tag end through the eye halfway through the knot. I'm only working with a short piece here, since on a fly the whole rig is 36" finished and mine is 6 with two shells. His video also cuts out after the first snell. I ended up tying standard snells, two in a row and it seems to be very strong."

They must have had a conversion problem when they did the Flash video. If you run it in Quicktime you'll get the whole thing but it sounds like the way you did it is solid.

I used quicktime and it worked thanks for the hint. I am going to retie the ones I have made and just start off with a longer piece. His method seems sturdier.

  6. Instead of the way this one s set up I've always had good luck tying in three-way swivels at the two points where your knots are on the main "rig" line (1) and use standard "clinch" knots for them. I only use singles instead of doubles on the hooks so I don't get into (2)

I was thinking of doing that with the 3-way swivels, but at this point I am tired of going to find and buy more tackle!

    Pm sent

Thank you, will be in contact.

Matt- I do not know the name of knot but I like to keep the hooks closer to the bottom when bait fishing usually 6" from sinker and 12" to second drop. Closer to the bottom the less dog fish. I mostly jig fish unless the Haddock are aound then typically bait.

I'm asking because I don't know - So, a couple inches really does matter when fishing cod?

THANK YOU.... What do you guys think of an improved blood loop as a superior alternative to the dropper loop?

Matt, # 2 is a snell, just like in the Fish Doctor "Tournament Tie" how-to video: http://www.fishdoctorcharters.com/template.tpl?selector=video

Thanks. I can't get his version of the snell to work. He does this thing where he puts the tag end through the eye halfway through the knot. I'm only working with a short piece here, since on a fly the whole rig is 36" finished and mine is 6 with two shells. His video also cuts out after the first snell. I ended up tying standard snells, two in a row and it seems to be very strong.

That sounds great. You may be going to Cashes Ledge about eighty miles off shore

Every time I go fishing for cod and haddock we use only the dropper loop. This is specially important when you are on a head boat with another 50 guys. When you get tangled with other lines (it happens all the time) it is very easy to take your hook and line off and get out of the tangle. The charter boats commonly use 80 pound test and dropper loops. it helps you to have your line in the water most of the time instead of wasting time on untangling.

The charter people will tel you to drop your line to the bottom and then bring it two feet back up. This is not because the cod is 2 feet above the bottom,it is to take the stretch out of your line.

You should realize that you will be fishing to 300 feet down and with mono you will be hard pressed to feel any bite at all and the thickness of the line makes it drift. If you use 80 pound test

braid you will have no stretch and you will be able to see every nibble and you do not have to bring your line 2 feet up. You can also use less weight. Just let your weight sink to the bottom and then jig it back up until you feel your sinker resistance.

Braid will help you catch 3 times as much as the others around you. Just be prepared to have to cut your line in case of tangles.

Get a spot on the bow or the rear ,there are less tangles .

Great point on the benefit of being able to remove a whole hook assembly with the dropper loop. Like I said above, I'll be using 60lb braid with a 50lb mono leader.

I just looked at the picture again and it made me feel a little proud.

It was in 2001 while fishing with Kayman Charters (6 person boat) That I pulled out some green  1 inch long glowsticks, the type you tie to your rod tip when still fishing at night, and tied them next to the hook.

The captain schratched his head and made some fun of me. After 18 cod within the hour ,he no longer laughed. Now I see it has become part of the standard setup.

Nice! How did you tie these to the hook? I'm thinking a small zip tie would work, what do you think?

I did the an overnighter last fall and we went to the fippinees which is 60 miles out the 2-day was heading to cashes. We caught a ton of pollock and some haddock. Had a good time on the Yankee Freedom. Have a great time I am heading over to NH on the 23rd to do some party boat fishing myself. $85.00 for a 12 hour marathon pretty good price. Have a great time and let us know how you did. PJ

Thank you for the input. Nice! yeah I am really looking forward to this. I will def. update with pictures when we get back.

  7. Lol you're starting to sound like the government!!

There shouldn't be any kickbacks for sales. Classifieds on this site probably accounts for half of its traffic. Put a price tag on that and that traffic drops substantially.

I like this system. I feel like I get $20 in value, so I pay $20.
