  1. The above quote is not by Thomas Jefferson. It is Cesare Beccaria's from an essay about crime and punishment.

Jefferson commented on this quote and called it a "false idea of utility". You can check this in the Monticelli library.

Claiming that statements such as these were made by the founding fathers  shows that the pro gun lobby is very creative in stretching the truth in order to validate their argument.

Heck, just throw in a founding father and claim he said something, it does not matter whether he did or not,

Cornelius, I'm not going to get on your case too hard about this, but really?

The quote comes from a passage in Jefferson's "Legal Commonplace" book. Sorry for the honest mistake.

It alarms me that you are very misleading when you suggest that Jefferson called it a "false idea of utility". If one were to read the whole note, they would not conclude this sentiment overall, but only with regard to a principal source of errors and injustice. Jefferson goes on to agree with the sentiment: "It certainly makes the situation of the assaulted worse, and of the assailants better, and rather encourages than prevents murder, as it requires less courage to attack unarmed than armed persons."

Please, there is no need to be inflammatory, and certainly no need to use ignorance as a foundation for an argument for discrediting the "gun lobby". You are not debating the gun lobby here anyway, you are debating your neighbors. Please let us know besides rhetoric, what facts you have to back up your position?

The whole context of Jefferson's note:

"A principal source of errors and injustice are false ideas of utility. For example: that legislator has false ideas of utility who considers particular more than general conveniencies, who had rather command the sentiments of mankind than excite them, who dares say to reason, 'Be thou a slave;' who would sacrifice a thousand real advantages to the fear of an imaginary or trifling inconvenience; who would deprive men of the use of fire for fear of their being burnt, and of water for fear of their being drowned; and who knows of no means of preventing evil but by destroying it.

The laws of this nature are those which forbid to wear arms, disarming those only who are not disposed to commit the crime which the laws mean to prevent. Can it be supposed, that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity, and the most important of the code, will respect the less considerable and arbitrary injunctions, the violation of which is so easy, and of so little comparative importance? Does not the execution of this law deprive the subject of that personal liberty, so dear to mankind and to the wise legislator? and does it not subject the innocent to all the disagreeable circumstances that should only fall on the guilty? It certainly makes the situation of the assaulted worse, and of the assailants better, and rather encourages than prevents murder, as it requires less courage to attack unarmed than armed persons."

  2. I like how the well thought out responses to this post are pro-gun, and the intelligible posts are anti-gun. Sammy got it right. Civil rights are not bestowed by a government. Even if they were, no matter how hard you try- you cannot be successful in legislating morality.

Stop being ignorant. We don't need more than 7 rounds for hunting, target shooting, etc. We need more than 7 rounds because the second amendment is the one that guarantees that this country will always be of, by, and for the people. The ultimate redress of grievances.  aka... AMERICA.

It's not like this is a new argument.

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.†

  3. Maybe 1/2 of the 3 year old kings we caught this year had an intact adipose fin.  One could conclude that the success of a fishing year would depend heavily on natural reproduction conditions in the rivers three years prior.  Bad river temps during the spawn, river fishermen success/take, spring conditions etc. are going to be factors in the size of the pool of salmon to catch out in the lake.  I also question the practice of inserting the micro chips into the nose of young fragile salmon fry.....do we really know what the actual mortality is of fish undergoing this process?  What about the mortality of the adipose fin clipping machine?  I would also add that if conditions in the smaller tribs were too warm that fish will move with the rest of the school elsewhere.  This year I think most are going to the Salmon, but a large portion of the western fish are going up the Niagara.  The bottom line is based on observed bait pods on the fishfinder.......we need more kings stocked!!!!!!

How do you know the age of the fish? Were they dark and in the stream? Also, they do check a representative sample of CWT'd fish 30 days after tagging. If the tags kill them, wouldn't they be belly up in the tanks?

  4. I've got the blood run on my 300 copper and don't like it.  It seems more pliable and a bit softer and it seems to fray MUCH MUCH easier.  I'm pretty sure the reason the Opti-Tackle copper broke was that I switched to a heavier rubber band (ran out of my normal ones and all the store had was one of those dumb variety packs), plus I tightened the drag a bit more than normal due to the rough seas.

I spoke with Roy (Mudflat) at the docks and he stated that he runs the copper through the swivel twice to avoid the same problem I had, which was the copper breaking at the Spro inline swivel.  It's going to be tight feeding it through, but I'll have to give it a try.

That being said, I had a lot less problems with the albright knot last year (once I figured out how to tie it correctly).  The swivels have seemed to cause nothing but trouble this year.  Next year I'm going to try to the shrink tubing over them to see if that helps, if not, I'm going back to the albright knots!

    Nick

I run the copper 2x thru and use hot glue all the way up the knot to the spro. I use opti-tackle copper as well.

Since the forum doesn't like people searching for 3 letter words (go figure), maybe this topic has been covered but I wouldn't know.

The following search terms are not allowed and were removed from your query: big, jon

Anyways, I got 2 electric Big Jon downriggers that came with the boat last year. I only now started using them pretty heavily, and unfortunately both of them when retrieving the balls, overheat and pop the breaker that's on them. It's pretty annoying to say the least, when it takes 5 minutes of waiting for the motor to cool off, and resetting the breaker every 5 or 10 feet of retrieve, to get your balls back up in the air, before you can redeploy them. And I am afraid the issue will get worse.

Does anyone have experience with this particular problem? I did see someone say in Google search results that they replaced the main line going to the Big Jons to a heavier gauge, but that doesn't make sense to me, since it's not that some "main" breaker trips, but it's the one on the DR itself, which indicates that it's simply struggling to bring the balls up, draws too much current and trips the breaker.

My plan of attack right now is
    1) call Big Jon and see what help, if any, they can offer in terms of troubleshooting
    2) taking them apart and greasing anything that moves
    3) replacing brushes on the motors (Google search results helped with finding similar fitting new brushes)
    4) ?

Btw, I just saw this sucker (mine look exactly like this one) on Craigslist for $350,
I know mine is old but I heard they're indestructible.

    Thanks for your help

Small wiring causes voltage drop, so if your wiring is in fact too small your motors have to draw more current in order to operate. This can cause an overheating scenario.
