My grandson and I were there on Sunday and they opened both sides. They were both used steadily all day. The center dock wasn't installed yet. Evidently they closed the left side again.

Sodus Fish Pen Work Day Announcement

I received an email from Matt Sanderson saying that our fish will be delivered during the week of April 17!  That doesn't leave a lot of time to get the pens ready.

I would like to get as many of you who can show this Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m.  With a bunch of people showing, it should only take one to two hours.  This year, we are moving back to Arney's Marina, and there is plenty of water.  The pens will be located to the north east corner, where they were previously.

The two pens need to have the nets re-attached along the bottoms and sides.  

But the tops are in good shape,  Bring wire cutters and a small step stool (if you have one) to reach the top.

I'll supply the tie wraps.

I know this is short notice, but there were a few delaying factors.

Hi everyone!

   I would like to get a work party together for a week from this Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m., at Krenzer Marine near the boat lift (south side of the road) to inspect the pens, install some new tipping ropes, and re-attach the top covers. Since we power washed and stored our fish pens in a warehouse for the winter, they are in pretty good shape for this year.

   I was informed by Matt Sanderson, our regional biologist with the DEC that our fish will be delivered on Monday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m.  If you are free and can assist with the fish transfer to the pens, we’d welcome the help.  If you can be there 15 to 20 minutes earlier, that would help, because the truck is usually early.

   Once again this year, I am begging for help to feed the fish during their stay in the pens.  The feeding schedules are 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m., 7 days a week, until they are released approximately 3 to 5 weeks later (depending on water temperature).  Feeding entails broadcasting two pre-measured bags of fish food over the pens, taking  and recording the water temperature, and recording the number of dead fish (if any).  The whole process only takes approximately 10 minutes. My grandson and I usually take the 4 p.m. feeding, and he enjoys it greatly.  If we have enough volunteers, we can break down the feeding shifts so you may only have to do week days or weekends.  I especially need the help on the weekends!

The docks were just put in at the public launch by Arnie's marine at Margaretta Drive.

They were just finished, and were driving away when I drove buy at 2:45.

Does anybody have an old Fish Hawk model 510- 520 in working order that they would like to donate to the Sodus fish pen project or sell cheep?

We've been using one to take water temperature readings at each feeding for many years.  It finally gave up last year, and we are in need of a new one or a reasonable substitute.

To the guys at the other fish pen sites along the lake, tell me what you are using and where you got it.  That would be a big help.

We plan to have a work day on Saturday, April 25 to assembly the nets to the pens and transport them to Arnie's Marina.

The pens need to be set in the water and be ready for the fish delivery on Monday, April 27 at 11:30a.m.

If you can attend, be there at 9:30a.m.  The work location is at Katlynn Marine Warehouse.  To get there, take Margaretta Drive (across from the public boat launch- north of Arnie's). Turn into Katlynn Marina Warehouse and drive to the far left corner of the lot.  Look for the cars.

If you have a pair of wire cutters, bring them with you to trim the tie wraps.

Also, If you happen to have some free time on Monday, April 27, we can use your help loading the fish into the pens.  Or just show up to watch. It's quite a site!

As I said in previous posts, the bay is clear of ice, the road is open to the north boat ramp (no dock yet), and if you have a small boat (say 16 footer) you should be able to get by the stone bar across the channel.  There is about 2-3 foot of water flowing out.

You could have made it out through the channel without any problem, as long as you stayed in the middle.

I was wasting some time today, casting off the pier, and watched three small boats go through.  They all appeared to be 16 footers.  One of the fellows told me he had about 2-1/2 to 3 feet of water under the boat.  Also, they did 3 for 5 browns.

Hi Bruce, Rippin'Line's right, the channel is still filled in.

I drove down to the channel last Tuesday, and the road is finally clear of ice and snow.  The public boat launch is clear, but no dock yet. 

There was a northwest wind blowing and the north end of the bay, and the channel were clear of ice. With this wind and rain, I wouldn't be surprised if the ice is gone by now. 

Maybe Hank could give us an update?  He might even know the dig schedule for the channel.

Wow- that's a big difference since I was there Tuesday!!

Evidently, I'm doing something wrong. I keep getting the harbor view from  2013-12-31 22:57:02.   Any ideas??

I drove through Fair Haven State Park today and took these pictures of the north end of Little Sodus Bay and the boat launch.

As you can see, the bay is open at the north end, as is the channel.

But the launch area is still filled in with ice.  And the remainder of the bay, south, is filled with float ice. 

The ice on Sterling Pond is completely gone.  I'd give it a couple more days and it's game on.

Oh- and for what it's worth, the north end of Port Bay is open, along with the public boat launch (no dock yet though) and the channel is not dug out yet.

There is a state public boat launch for small boats very close to where Gman was talking about.

From the intersection of East Bay road and Garner Road, go south about an eighth of a mile to Slaght Road.

Go east on Slaght Road about two hundred yards, and on the left is a public parking lot with a small dirt road that goes right to the waters edge.

Many people use it to launch 12 - 14 foot aluminum boats, canoes and kayaks.  Follow the meander north to the bay, and a small channel to the lake.

I replied to "Sodus launches open?" in the "lake Ontario (South Shore)" forum that the Coast Guard boat launch is open (with pictures).

As ryonybony said, the launch and chute are cleared.

The lake shore both ease and west appear to be open.

My ten year old grandson and I have been volunteering to feed the fish at the Sodus pens for the last three years, and enjoy every minute of it!  As soon as Jake gets home from school, he's eager to get to the pens for the scheduled feeding, taking waters temps and looking for any fish that may have died.

It's a lot of fun, and also very rewarding knowing that what you are doing contributes to the future of this great trout and salmon fishery we have in Lake Ontario and it's tributaries. 

It is a little time consuming because you have to commit to feeding seven days a week for two to four weeks.  But the satisfaction I get to see Jakes enthusiasm, and knowing what we are contribution to makes it all worth it.

I would highly recommend it to all the dads, moms and kids out there.  It only takes fifteen to twenty minutes and its a great way to shake off the winter blahs!
