Gotta Bite

I love the NK spoons. They hold up a lot better than any of Michigan Stinger spoons where the paint comes off after a fish or two. Most of my productive NK spoons have teeth marks on them or gouges in the paint but that paint is still there not peeling off. I hope they stay in business.

That's what it sounds like to me also. The screw may be loose and not engaging the worm gear. I had the same issue with a Penn reel a few years ago. That was the cure. I have 1/2 dozen convectors and they are work horses. Drags could be a little smoother, but they get the job done.

What charter did you go out with?

I heard plenty of fish still in the lake. I will be up for my last weekend on the lake this year. I'm pulling the boat and packing up camp until next spring. Wanted to come up last weekend but we had some serious flooding issues going on. Hopefully we'll end it on a good note.

I emailed Okuma about the problem. I have my old cabela's 10'6" telephone poles that I used the past 4 years without issue, other than hard to maneuver around them in a smaller boat. Good luck to you guys this weekend. Heading up to the Lake now. It look like Friday and Saturday are going to be pretty good and Sunday Irene will make her presence known. Probably going to just pack and head back home.

I am just hoping I'm fortunate to be on the board. 2 years ago when I weighed in I was in 2nd that weekend and eventually would have finished in 22nd place overall but of course I wasn't in the derby. Maybe if I'm fortunate to make the board at all. That would be great. $200 of BW gear would make it even better.

That's pretty much the only brand of fly I use anymore so my chances of getting salmon on it are very good. LOC top 20 may be a different story. Will it be a $200.00 credit or certificate that we can choose what flies we want or will it be a pre selected pack of BW tackle and gear? Either way its a great prize. Just wondering.

Went out with a friend and his son in the a.m. Friday who have not fished the lake before. We find out his son doesn't like the waves so we had to leave the lake at 6:00 and did not get back out to fishing until 9:30 after we dropped his son off with his mother back at camp. We were able to get 2 kings. One off the rigger down 120 and and then took a rip on the custom blue weiner but nobody was home by the time we got to it. About a half hour later the 400' copper trolling a Mag Black widow spoon is screaming out line after a long battle and my friend complaining that his arms were tired we boated the king. I told him "Welcome to the world of Copper line fishing". We trolled a little while longer to try and get him his limit with not luck. We motored back to camp, He was tired and had enough time on the water.

Went out with Jeff empty hook Waner around 6:00 to see if we could get a few in the box. He says we're getting double digit action and I say "no way" a few at most. Boy was I wrong. It was slow at first. We were discussing the affect of playing music and fishing , similar to the post last week here on the LOU. I myself always play music on the boat. Plugged in the ipod and put a on mixture of 80's and hair band music from the day and rods were firing. The dipsey with the chrome and green dot spinny was the first to go and I lost every thing including the dipsey. Why did it break off with the drag set just right. Well so at least I know this pod of fish likes that music. After that we were tripping over each other going for the rods and for the next 2 hours we had doubled up 3 times . On one occasion Jeff had 500' foot of line out and I had 450'. His spit the hook and my wire line broke again. This time it got snagged in my roller rod. I cautiously started hand lining it all back in just in case he was to take off with the wire line around my hand, but he was gone. That's 2 break offs in one night. I am starting to think my roller rods may be the culprit. Anyway, We just couldn't keep the dipseys in the water for a long period of time. One was down 325 with a mtn dew flasher and a pole dancer. The other was a green pro troll and a Dawns nappy monkey fly. We had a blast. A lot of action in a short amount of time.

I thought for sure we had them nailed the next day.

I went back out to the same water the next day to be greeted by the entire Lake Ontario fishing fleet. I had my friend and son who was determined to over come his fears after seeing the fish we had caught the day before. Well they were shut down for us and alot of people from what I understand. We couldn't get anything to go and after a few hours on the lake with no action we called it a day.

Sunday morning I went out the Jolly Roger boys from Mike's marina on their boat to fish with them. I was not sure if we could get out even with the storm brewing. We headed out and set up in 120 FOW and after about 20 minutes we had 3 rods fire. 2 rods had nobody home and the one that was on the end of my rod was there and the fight was on. After about 15 minutes we boated a nice king.

Shortly after the storm hit and we headed for safe harbor as did everyone else.

We listen to all the above on my boat but we turn the radio on to the polkas when things get really slow. It seems to do the trick. My buddies beg me nit to do it unless absolutely necessary.

Looks like the temps have moved back in shallower. I hope it stays that way for this weekend.

Great job You got to love the way a steel head fight. IMO, They can be more fun than fighting a king at times. Fresh Water Tarpon.

Way to go! We went out around 11:00 on Saturday and came back around 3:00 and only did one king. Probably the worst time to go but we were chomping at the bit to get out once the lake laid down. Only went out to 240 and trolled south to the stack. I had heard on Sunday when we were leaving 300 plus FOW was the way to go. It's obvious by this report. Congrats on your catch. Looking forward to fishing again on Thursday.

It was nice to meet you I'm person DD. I am really glad you did well in the tourney. We did ok and caught fish everytime time out but we weren't in the tourney. I'll be up tonight for the weekend. Give me a shout on the radio if you're up.

Thanks Rod. Unfortunately I didn't stick around for the awards ceremony. I had to pack up and head back to Pa. I was up for 8 days straight and had to return my in-law's camper and a lot of unpacking to do for work the next day. Jeff called me while I was on the road to say we got cash and prizes. I kind of wish I would have stayed, but we weren't sure if it was just top five or top ten. Hoping for a top 5 placement next season. I did briefly talk to one of your team mates since you guys were sponsored by Jon's and Big Weenie I was curious to see what was working for you guys. Take care maybe I'll see you on the lake. I'll be back up in two weeks maybe for the LSRC. Not 100% sure I'm doing it yet or not.

I was up with the family on Jul. 2nd thru the 6th and they headed back home I stayed behind to focus on getting ready and scouting for what would be my first time participating in a fishing tourney.I fished with friends and family on those days and we caught fish every day it was a blast. The on the 7th I fished solo for the first time which was an adventure and it kept me busy with rods firing and trying to steer , fish and net the fish (no auto pilot). Most came on light lines and spoons. The fleas weren't bad at all. Went 5 for nine loosing to nice browns at the net and 2 acrobatic steelheads. One was a pig and was sure it would have made the LOC board. 2 throw back skippys and 2 kings and a brown. Went out with our Team Capt. Jeff "Empty hook" Waner and we were on kings right away. We would throw all back, to continue in search mode for the opening day. Other spots did not prove as productive as the first few but we felt good about Saturday morning. The first morning found us back at our spot in shallower water but with good temps. Flasher and flies off the riggers were taking the hits. It was your meat and potatoes white on white/ green on green. we had 3 teenage kings in the box within the 1st hour. We trolled out a little deeper after the bite shut down. The waves were rocking and rolling us pretty good. Our observer started chumming and we picked up a smaller but legal king, maybe it was just a coincidence, That was it for awhile. We headed back into the shallower waters that are known to harbor good numbers of browns and we picked up 2 more browns and that was it unfortunately. We didn't know how the other teams would fair with the water being rough. After the first day weigh in, we found our selves in 11th place. Not good, but I knew we could do better. We returned to the same place where we started Saturday. It was shutdown completely. Slow start and we headed to our other marks from pre-scouting and we would have a steady pick all morning. Most fish came on the meat and potato set ups in the morning. Once that high sun came out we broke out the Mtn. dew flasher and Big Weenine pole dancer which started taking hits almost immediately. We went 2 for three on that. Then the salmon bite shut down. We moved back to Brown trout waters again and switched over to spoons and our light line rods. We took a hit on the slider and it got off. The the other rods fires and we're fighting a steelie who was putting on a show. Then the center rigger fires and its taking alot of line. We have 10lb test leadered down to 8. Are wondering if we are going to get this in or not. This 18lb king things he's a steelhead and goes airborne a time or two. After a battle that seemed to go on forever, we boated the king. Just one more to box out, but it just never happened. We didnt want to chance getting a DQ so we headed in. After it was all said and done we ended up finishing in 8th place which put us in the money and prizes. It was alot of fun and made some new friends. Looking forward to next years Oswego LOPA. Thanks to Jeff "Empty Hook" and his excellent driving skills and boating skills in those rough seas and putting us on the fish as well as Tom "Fish Checker" Smith, and his fish landing and netting ability depending on if I was fighting the fish or netting it we didn't lose a single fish at the boat during the tourney. It all worked out in the end.

Way to go. Now the addiction begins....

I looked at them a few years ago and the issue was how the wire would easily break off that sent the signal from the probe. Supposedly they have redesigned them since that time. I purchased a Depth raider and have had some minor issues, but I know those who have Fish Hawks with issues too. Technology unfortunately is not perfect. I can't speak for the cannon, but I am more or less satisfied with my Depth raider. I was having some signal issues with mine, I called the customer service and ended up talking to the man who owns the company. He told me exactly what to do and I was back in the game again. I like the fact I was able to address the problem with one call. Just my 2 cents.

Invest in a depth raider or fish hawk. It's money well spent. it's help you find the thermocline and colder temps in the summer which will help put you on the kings.

Down the Chute means the middle of the back of your boat. Usually in between the two down riggers if you have one on each side, its some times the best place to land a fish especially if you are running planer and dipseys off to the sides. Copper and LC lines can sometimes get tangled when landing the fish or I should say the other way around.

I rent the cottage at the marina and stay on the west side. I will however be camping at Selkirk for the weekend with Family and friends. I'll PM you my cell number. I will be fishing just about every morning and running to the dunes in the afternoon with the family to hang at the beach.
