Proposed wind-generated power platforms built in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario waters has prompted questions about these windmills to be constructed in open waters of these lakes.
Area groups and individuals with concerns about a proposed Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project (GLOW) have asked John Droz Jr., noted physicist and environmental activist to offer a presentation in Western New York.
Droz's discussion, "Our Energy Future: Determined by Science or by Lobbyists?" will be given at the Rapids Theater, 1711 Main St., in Niagara Falls at 7 p.m. on Friday October, 15th.

I think what Tom and I are trying to get across to you is "Nothing belongs in the Lake". It is protected by the Public Trust Doctrine (Do a search). It's a protected natural resource. Look at the "facts" on the output of wind energy. It requires such a large land footprint to produce just a little bit of "expensive" electricity.
92% of New York State Power is "non"-fossil fuel. This means 8% is either coal or some form of petroleum. I agree we need to either replace these facilities or enhance these technologies to make it cleaner. Wind has it's place and should be utilized. However, It does not belong in the Great Lakes.
Go to the NYPA GLOW project website, Read their disclaimer.... This discounts everything they say on the site. It's all about the money!

The Hudson River is the thirty-third most polluted river in the United States. Per the EPA and DEC, It is completely forbidden to eat any fish from the river. This is what we want to avoid. Yes, they are dredging to remove these toxins because water tests indicate there a serious risk to humans, fish and wildlife that use this water source.
Fossil Fuel energy production only accounts for 8% in New York State. We do not need to take these drastic measures to produce <1% to the grid.

The cited USGS site says we used 262,000mgal/day from surface water & 84mgal/day from ground water.
Yeah buddy I'm the one twisting facts... the webpage clearly states 262,000mgal/day for surface and 83,400mgal /day from ground. But hey you don't twist facts do you...
262000 / (262,000 + 83,400) = ~.75 = 75%. I suggest you learn to use your reading glasses and a calculator prior to commenting on another person's math skills.

Stepping away from fishing…..
The fact is... "ONLY" 2.5% of the world's water supply is actually fresh water. 20% of that is found in the Great Lakes. It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to know that these Lakes need to be protected. The EPA even states on their site that toxins in Lake Ontario are buried safely in the sediment. We are going to compromise our fresh water resource for an old technology that doesn’t work?

Perhaps I'm just uneducated about the downsides to this other than "it will look ugly" or "this person profits instead of this person", or "I won't be able to fish that half mile area."
Pro sides I can think of are lowering dependency on foreign oil and bringing quite a few jobs to the local area...
I'm open to hearing the pro/cons though...

I think the biggest concern is the compromise of fresh water. Europe (who is the front runner in wind) has never put one wind farm in fresh water. Lake Ontario would be the first "ever". The land mass (footprint) could stretch 40 miles... They would function 30% of the time. 100-150ft of water will be off limits to boating and fishing (there is an enforcement radius around a off-shore wind farm), tower vibration and construction would release PCBs, aramite, lead, mirex, mercury, and carbon tetrachloride buried in the sediment (from the 60's & 70's), View shed would be forever altered (not as important if they functioned better), ONLY <1% added to the grid. All if this for 1 Billion out of are pocket and a technology that works minimal.
Lowering dependency on foreign oil?? - Its a key word the government wants you to hear. As is "Green" and Global Warming". Its words they use to get you on board. You think Obama received over 100 million in his campaign because his tooth sparkled when he smiled or gave people that warm fuzzy feeling? How does wind power achieve this? We will still need petroleum to build our plastics, run our vehicles, power manufacturing. Wind adds a little bit to our electrical power grid.
I guess the most important point I would like to make - Fresh water is more precious then diamonds, gold, or currency.

This proposal would see the construction of 100-166 40ft industrial wind turbines offshore (50-150ft) stretching through from Parma, Greece, Rochester, Irondequoit and Webster with a possible power plant and storage facility location in Irondequoit Bay. There are several other potential projects targeting Niagara, Ontario, and the St Lawrence counties.
We have recently made the news regarding this issue and are looking for your help. We have went door-to-door in our community to raise nearly 700 signatures to oppose this development. I was put to the task to ask the LOU community to join in the fight. This will affect fishing in lake Ontario. Please go to the link provided and sign our petition to oppose the GLOW project in the Great Lakes. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
