  1. Sounds like the Grady is older and has too many unknowns. I would not touch it if the outdrive is an OMC. Some of those boats also had problematic merc 470's and I would stay away from them as well. Closed system cooling with small heat exchangers and stacked water pumps as well as a gererator instead of an alternator. I would repower the Trophy. I have a 83 wa2002 and the best part is a previous owner repowered it with a 1999 175 Merc.

  2. I really enjoy my Smart Troll. It has a lot of advantages. The probes are so small and rechargable without opening them. They are not limited to downriggers. It is a great advantage to know where your coppers leadcore and divers are running, Last time out we where able to follow a thermocline and know exactly where our divers are running.

As for the 800 Rpm I only sometimes loose signal on a turn to port. But I mounted my transducer on the starboard side and my kicker is on the port side. If I loose signal it is only momentarily so I don't care. Next time I look at the screen the data is back again.

  3. Didn't work for me either. Had high hopes for some coho or something. Was not expecting a king or anything. Anyway its back in my bass tackle and removedd from the trolling gear. In Canada we can have 4 hooks per line so I put 5 swim baits on it. One was without a hook making it legal. Thought it might add to the total presentaion bait school effect.

  4. Is this an electric shift? I can tell you what I know about a 1975 OMC old style stringer that I used to own. The bottom gearcase with the electric shift must have a "type C" oil. Do not use anything but that in an electric shift. The type C oil is thinner and has some additives for the electic shift. I would go with pap's recommondation for the upper gearbox. Use can use other oils in the top too but they do tend to leak so the better oils will not mix with water so well and give you the best protestion. As others said check it a few times a season. Mine leaked but I never got it fixed and just changed the oil a few times a year.

  5. The whole idea of the leadcore is for its wieght to give you depth. I think the dipsy would pull so hard on the leadcore it would be uneffective. You would be better off just pulling the dipsy behind wire or braid. If it is depth you want from the leadcore without a long line use segmented leadcore say 3 colors with a snap weight or torpedo diver. If you wish to get that away from the boat use it with a planer board either big or inline.

    See here for example.

  6. If you had a partial tank during the winter it will get moisture condensation. Can't be helped as the tank needs to breathe so filling it with little air space for condensation is the answer as well as fuel stabilizer for the ethanol. Also as stated I would be a fuel/ water separator filter. My mechanic did not even like the idea that I was checking and dumping my fuel water filter. Replacing it every year was his answer. Not sure how you are going to get it out. I had a tank out once and ble compressed air through the tank till it was dry. Make sure the compressed air has a dryer. You may just want to keep dumping and cleaning your water separator till you have no more evidence of water and then replace it with a new filter element.

  7. Thanks for the replies. I Emailed the company but I have not heard back yet. We will be hauling boat out of water in early June and hope to decide before what work will be required then and have everything ready. I am really interested in this product. Being a full time live aboard and fishing from 3 boats this opens up a whole new world for us. Big cost for us is the 3 transducer as most times we fish from 1 boat.

You likely have not got a reply from Smart Troll as they are all in Grand Rapids at the show. I assume you will get a reply this week when they get back home.

  8. If the lake is too rough for an 18 footer, it is too rough for a 24 footer also.

No not really. We had an 18 foot as our first boat a 23 as our second and now a 20 foot. We go out in rougher weather than we used to and have not yet took a wave over the windshield in the 20 but used to all the time in the 18. Nothing like a cold shower on a cold day to wake you up. The 20 foot has way more ability to handle the big water. We got caught too many times in bad weather in the 18. The wind will always pick up before you think etc so I would say the 2 foot is well worth if for you.
