  1. Hey Raaven, tell that tanker that is over taking you out there that you have the right of way, and then you can come back on this sight and post another thread " sunk but i was in the right of way" #1 rule of survival. ;) HE'S BIGGER THAN YOU!:rofl::rofl: a sail boat has the right of way of us trollers out there.
Ok, you let yourself get pushed around by a blow boater if you want to think that. I turn my stern to them long before they are close to me, they get closer than I want them to..but they always alter their course as they pass me! ;) Freighters are in the shipping lanes , That's their road. Or restricted in a channel on the St. Lawrence. or when entering Oswego or any Port, have already given their "security" call... common sense to stay out of their way!

Sail boaters have no common sense... :@ They ONLY learn one thing WRONG..they think they always have the right of way!

I have never seen a bigger crowd of trollers anywhere on Lake Ontario than the Salmon river area. It's really not that bad if you are paying attention to what's about to happen, and CHANGE YOUR OWN COURSE accordingly ahead of time. Oswego harbor trolling gets congested also at times...not as many boats, just a much smaller area. Here again, if you "read" the crowd, and give up your pass on where you want to go at the moment, you can usually have very little problem. Some people just arrogantly force their way into a bigger problem up ahead.

Back in the early 80's when there really was a crowd of trollers....I worked on The Amberjack with Capt. Ken Budd. He would only put down one downrigger in those crowds..turn on a dime, ;) and go right back where we came from! That rod would fire, I would send the same item back down on it while we battled the fish on!

Ken was the man who taught me " Just give me ONE that works".

  2. Also a boat engaged in fishing does not mean any of us, at any time. Recreational fishermen, charters included, don't count as "fishing vessels". As far as the regs go this is exclusively for commercial fishing operations.
This is true. And yet, Charters are considered "commercial operations" in fine print to void warranties.... "Commercial" in Coast Guard regulations for safety equipment requirements...etc, etc.. 8)

So...when a charter boat has all it's gear out, including planer boards, and is restricted in her ability to maneuver due to the nature of her work ...

If the Charter boat was equipped with a three light mast and/or dayshapes, indicating her as a a commercial fishing vessel....

Would this legally jump the vessel up the pecking order and make her a "fishing" vessel?

    I have always wondered?

    Rule 26

A fishing vessel is defined as one engaged in fishing with nets, lines, trawls, or other gear that restricts her ability to maneuver. It does not include sport-fishing boats with trolling lines, which are not considered to pose any such restriction.

  3. Sail boats have right of way all the time, no matter what, you should read a boaters book,as for the other guys, i feel your pain

    [ Post made via Android ] Android.png

If you truly believe this, YOU better read that book some more and LEARN "The pecking order".... There is a vessel who ALWAYS, NO MATTER WHAT, has the Right of Way...

    It's the...

    1. OVERTAKEN VESSEL.

    2. Not under command

    3. Restricted in ability to maneuver

    4. Fishing

    5. Sailing

    6. Power

    7. Seaplane

Even the seaplane, at the bottom of the pecking order, has the Right of Way over any vessel on this list, including a sailboat, WHEN BEING OVERTAKEN !

Simple solution? Turn your stern to these sailboats, let them over take you....They have to move and give right of way to you! ;)

Now if only the sailors would read/learn the rules of the road beyond ...The sailboat has the right of way. :@

  4. The Wayne County Storm Trackers reported, tracked, and photographed numerous waterspouts off-shore of Wayne County this morning:

    http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S2759115.shtml?cat=566

One held together and came ashore between Port Bay and Fair Haven but created no damage as it sheared apart:

    9-9-12waterspout-2.jpg

We suspect there may have been some off Monroe County, but there has been a lack in response to our call for support in that area. So we are opening it up to any fishing craft that frequents Lake Ontario waters and would like to become part of our on-water/near-water spotting network. Our #1 goal is public safety and relaying information to save life & property. Drop me a PM if interested. 8)

    8) I like watching them form...from a distance! Thought one was trying this morning in Mexico Bay, went down in cabin to grab camera, when I came back up, a rod fired, by the time we landed the fish, The spout was gone, or never formed at all?
  5. Well Raven.....guy driving 8 hrs Plus ......how pissed would you be spending all that money on fuel, hotel, and what not just to sit at the dock watching the waves crash over the pier heads? That is a lot of money to dish out for nothing.....that's ok we rescheduled.......lol

You bet your rear end that I will never ever listen to the forecast again...

    [ Post made via Android ] Android.png

    Oh, I know..it's a double edged sword!

I personally just had a walleye trip I booked as a client aboard Vision Quest out of Erie PA. for TODAY.....cancelled by Capt. Pete on Friday... ;(;(;(

We could have fished today...:lol:

I appreciate Capt. Pete thinking of "saving" us a wasted trip out there for nothing...

But then again, we already planned on spending "x" amount of $$$ and time on Hotels, food, alternate entertainment, etc, etc while out there anyway....

So, if the wind blew today, we would have been $750 ahead of the game anyway? ;) We would have rescheduled another trip for next year whether or not we fished this year.

I'm sure as a group we could have found something else to do around the area if we had been blown off this morning!

Instead I'm sitting home, when I could be out having fun with my friends on a road trip! :beer:8)

  6. I am north of 50 years and it would be the pinnacle of my fishing career to boat a legal muskie.

Who would you try to book a trip with for the best chance at getting one on either Niagara or the

St. Lawrence? Please don't be shy or humble about replies. All replies are appreciated.

    Thanks

    Frank

Thank you guys! For remembering us! 8):D

Capt. Larry Jones for Niagara/ Buff Harbor !

I could also suggest Capt. Rich Clarke/ Sign Man Charters for the St. Lawrence River....

There are Many other great Captains out there also. ;) We don't see Capt John Orevac in Clayton as much as we used to...but that man is a Musky catching Machine!

A little late in the season to get a ride on The Waterwolf.......

We do have a couple open dates though.

    Oct. 24 th

    Oct. 27 and 28

    Nov. 7 th

Dec. 13 and 14 (weather pending on these late dates, of course. But the last few years we have run right to the end. This year? We will see!)

Frank, good luck in your quest to catch your fish of a lifetime! Whoever you choose to fish with, I'm sure they will do their best to provide you with such an opportunity.

  7. just lost that one last nov in alex bay....nutt`n since.Gave it a try on local waters last wk but flammed out.Only fish caught/seen were casting suicks and bulldawgs.Hopefully this year we won`t bring the wind with us...that was crazy.I`m not affraid lol.How about that mr.toothy?i`m still waiting to replace that one. That`s a nice lure.

Mr. Toothy has produced lots of northerns, but no muskie...yet! 8) Maybe this fall ?

  8. We are heading to clayton sept 28 and again nov 30th for a few days.with a couple trips in between(stay @ bertrands).Gonna give Blk lake a try sept 14th..try to locate some of those ghost muskies.

    Bob S

 See you on Nov. 30 th. ! :) I still haven't caught a legal Muskie on that Baker you gave me...how's that Bergerking rig treating you?
  9. hope someone gets a 70 lber this year and puts the muskie record away.

I'm trying! 8) I would be just as happy to see you get it. Good luck out there. I won't be in Clayton until Oct.?- Dec15....Stop over room 7 in Bertrands for a  if you're still in town!

  10. Well friends have been asking me for my official "squirrel forecast" for the year. You see I have black walnut trees in my yard, and when the squirrel activity is high......bad winter. Who needs a farmer's almanac right? I was down at Barcelona Sunday and notice lots of early Monarch butterflies flying south over the lake (sign 1). Noticed Kings are really dark this year (sign 2). My squirrels have not been very active despite good nut crop. Sooooooo, my educated guess would be an early start to the fall cool season, but a mild winter. Hope we get some rain for the streams soon.
Rain would be good...I sure hope the water temps drop faster than they did last fall, for a good musky season. 8) As long as the water gets cold, the nasty weather could hold off until after Dec. 15 th ?
  11. It could be that a lot of the success of the natural reproduction for kings is that they do not have to spend a summer in the river. They are hatched in Oct/Nov and out by May/June. Cohos, steelhead, Atlantics spend at least one summer in the river where I think they are subject to a lot more mortality due high river temps. YOY salmonids cannot withstand water temps in the upper 60’s, lower 70’s for extended periods.

Or...maybe SOME of the cohos are wild, and the DEC doesn't clip the adipose on the stocked coho's, so we wouldn't know the difference?

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

Started out in about 140’ of water. Took a rip on the 220 Wire, rod was dead by the time I got to it, brought it in and the leader was gone. Hmm, should have gone home right after that cuz things sure didn’t go any better after.

A little later saw two boats kinda close together up aways, didn’t think too much about it till we saw that one boat was DEC. They made their way back to us and pulled up alongside.

“Sir, need you to hold up two life preservers and two fishing licenses for me please†was the call from the twin Yammy powered vessel.

I popped my head into the cuddy cabin and grabbed two vests and held them up. That provoked an approving nod from the officer. My dad already had his license out, so I reached into my pocket for mine. Ut –oh, no license. :o Must have left it in the car back in Ithaca. I held up dads license and told them I didn’t have mine on board.

“Need your name, DOB, address, and phone number†was the reply from the officer. After I gave them that, the vessel moved off a bit. I thought good, they will look me up on their on-board computer, and they wont have to board us and look for more issues, cool! After about 5 minutes the vessel moved closer, and one officer handed me a ticket - which wasn’t easily done in 3 & 4 foot seas, and six lines out, I might add.

“Sir, get a copy of your license and send it in with this ticket, and it will get dismissed†said the officer. I thanked him and the twin Yammies roared to life. Phew, dodged one there! Coulda been a lot worse.

Oh yeah, we were fishing, right? Noticed the other wire rig had a shaker on it so brought that in and released a small Rainbow. Slid out to 300’ of water and was still reading 70 + degrees on my probe, down 100. Is that thing working? Holy crap. Looked at the Moor display and it was jumping around – 71. 65. 38! Then back to a steady 71. ??? After a bit released a small king that had hit the 250 wire pulling an NBK spoon. Pointed the boat for the bay and got a release on the 100’ rigger, SD & fly. Set the hook and fish was on for a second then gone. Reeled it in and the fly and half the leader was gone. ;( That rig had taken a lot of hits on it the past few trips, I guess I missed a nick someplace? Oh well, lets go in. Headed into the bay and noticed right away a blue light flashing ahead – Harbor Patrol! He had a boat pulled over and was talking to them. I looked at our speed and we were going 5 MPH. Good, lets just slide right past them and get the boat back on the trailer. NOPE! He heads straight for us and turns on the blue flashing lights again.

“How many times do you use the bay here?†was the call from the officer. About once a month was my reply.

“Then you are aware of our no wake policy here?†was the annoyed voice from the flashing blue light clad boat.

I said back that yes, I am aware and we were going 5 MPH…

“No wake does NOT mean 5 MPH, it means no wake†was the now very annoyed reply from the officer. I bit my lip hard and apologized, thinking -I don’t know what the inside of a cell in Sodus NY looks like, but better not find out either. :@

We finally got to the ramp and some guy was wading in the water for about 20 minutes looking for something that fell out of his boat. Why not? Seemed perfectly normal for this day!

Finished off our trip by stopping in at Warrens. Our thanks to Troy, who happily helped us refill our tackle boxes. Was definitely the high point of the day.

I had my turn with the DEC on Wednesday. I was Captaining for another boat, who's owner couldn't make it due to his "real job". Just hooked up to a fish and here they come! They politely pulled up along side us while the young lady was battling, checked fishing licenses, Life jackets, My Captains License, and both mine and the Mates Maritime Consortium cards !

Everything was legit, so they moved on their way ! :D

  13. My buddy tryed putting a traxteck system on his boat. the custy service was not good. As i understand it the phones got shut off and they couldn t be contacted anymore. I dont know the full story but thats what i understood.

They answer the phone when I call...So I'm not sure? Getting Jeff on the phone is a different story..... Melody, I think? Still waiting for ours, but they are coming! :)

I hope to have them by Musky season.... :wondering:

  14. Ok. Dumb question here but why are the beads even on the fly harness to begin with? With the fly over them can they even be seen by the fish? What difference does bead size and color make on the fly itself? I know color matters a lot to fish but if they can't see them then what's the thought behind it? I fish flies every time out and have always wondered. I figured they were there to protect leader between the single hook and treble from the sharp toothy kritters

I've had many days that a fly was hit so many times there were only a few strands of material left on it and it was still catching fish.

I believe the fish were hitting the beads.

I've also had many days that a white fly with white beads wasn't taking many shots and replaced it with a white fly with green beads and they were slamming it.

I'm a firm believer that bead size and color make a big difference in catch rates.

Raven made a good point regarding weight effecting action as well.

Speed and leader length also have alot to do with it.

    Glen

;) Your boat misses you .....I'm tied up two slips away now ! 8)

Put a fly without beads in the water while trolling, look at it, then put the same fly WITH beads in the water, look at it.....

    There IS A DIFFERENCE.

    Bead size matters also... ;)

Rig one fly with one size beads, tie the same length leader behind your chip, as the same fly with bigger beads...observe the action of the two flies.

Same goes with HOOKS. (Maybe it all has to do with the overall weight of the rig?)

We troll with a Strike Vision underwater camera, and play with this stuff all the time....Fine tuning a rig to what we think looks good, doesn't mean much. But then all of a sudden a rig goes down and a salmon or muskie shows up immediately and tells us what THEY want!

So we duplicate it . 8)

  16. Here is a quick edit for a tough day of fishing for the first ever Atommik Invitational. It was a blast to fish! Thanks Tom and family/friends for a great job and effort put forth to this event!

 Great video! Thanks for sharing.

I will have to get my father on-line to check that out. He would be tickled to see the old Misty Blue still out there doing what she was built for!

  17. I am considering making my own trolling flys. Have you guys tried the Trans UV Extreme?

What are some good color combinations you guys like?

    greens and..... ;)

Very addictive and fun past time !

There's a certain feeling about having a fly you tied get hot for an hour....and frustrating when you can't catch another fish on it for a few days after... :$

Just try a different one..... :)

you don't know how to tie flies. Lol

    [ Post made via Android ] Android.png

    :rofl::rofl: I know...That's why I still buy A-Tom-Miks to catch my fish. :*
