  1. I have found the most success using wire lines and dipsy divers.  I run 2 deep between 60-80 foot down pulling flasher and fly combos for Lakers then run 2 higher in the 25-35 foot mark with spoons for rainbows, browns, walleyes and pike. I also park a couple riggers in the 20-45 foot mark with small spoons. Oddly enough we have caught different fish at all depths. For example we caught a smallmouth this weekend on a flasher fly combo in 100 ft of water down 80. And have caught big lakers down 20 over 100’ on small spoons.
Its a fun lake but takes some time to really figure it out.

  2. Awesome! We were out Saturday and did a few bows, a few Lakers and a smallie. Had 2 break offs on the dipsey at 40 fow after a hard hit. Green and orange spoons seemed good for us.

Wouldn’t be catching these bows without your reports!

    Thank you again!

  3. Pike population has been declining like crazy from the bubble skin disease last 4 or 5 years. They should eventually bounce back but will be awhile. Some kind of parasite that gets in their skin and eventually kills them. They end up bobbing/floating around right before they die. They are suddenly very difficult to target. Does anyone know how bad the fleas are now in owasco? Are they at least manageable? I'm going down tomorrow regardless. Just trying to get a heads up.

That’s interesting. I appreciate the info

  4. Interesting, the last one we caught was on the north east corner down 50 over 65. My first time ever on the lake in mid may i caught 10 pike on the north west corner in 12 fow on crank baits. All others since then have been on accident

  5. I love that lake! I caught my eye (27”) in 65 fow right on the bottom. I never would have expected that. I have to say though that the Rainbow that hit the copper line was ferocious! Only 18” but fought like an Ontario Steelhead. Pretty crazy.
Just curious, does anyone target Pike out of there? I have caught a dozen or so over the years and only 1 trolling last year. Love to figure those out someday if there is any numbers in the lake?

  6. Thanks to all your help on here I was finally able to get some Rainbows in the boat yesterday as well as a beautiful Eye. Wire dipsey rod and a copper rod were active for me yesterday. That cloud cover in the AM has those fish hungry!

  7. 300 set up, line counter okuma, bought them pre spooled with blood run copper, 45# I believe. I like the line counter because I can adjust how much copper I want out. Based on what the fish hawk tells me, I can look at the copper drop rate and try to adjust the copper to keep it at temp or just above. It’s not a perfect science and you get ware on your copper but for me it beats having multiple copper set ups.

    Appreciate the reply

  8. Anyone have any advice on where to start fishing Owasco? I'm trying to target bows, browns, maybe the occasional laker. Walleye would be a bonus. I spend alot of time on cayuga and lake O on occasion but have never fished owasco. I plan on launching from emerson park saturday morning. Would you start east side, west side etc? Looking at a map there is a hump on the west side that rises from the bottom not far from the launch at the north. Maybe start there?

Also, is there a kiosk or something to pay at on the way in emerson park or do you just pay someone on the way out. Never launched there. Thanks for any advice!

We have found the best luck on the north east side this year. Start there and watch your screens for active fish. We don’t catch a ton of silvers on the lake but the ones we have caught were on that east side in 80-100 fow in the top 40’. I am sure a lot has changed in the last few weeks with temps but that’s where I would start.

Good luck. Let us know how you do!

  9.
Had a young man and his family on the MissD this weekend. He has restored my faith in today's youth. According to his mom, Paul has been up to his eyeballs in YouTube videos on fishing. Paul helped me put rods out, picked out rigs... Watched intently while I trimmed cut bait and rigged.
As we trolled some fertile waters off Rochester, Paul told me he wanted to catch a Steelhead and a King. Not a challenge I took lightly... Especially from a 9 year old kid.
At the end of the day... As the family walked off the dock, I heard Paul ask his mother " We are coming back out with Capt Matt Again next year ..Right?"
The smiles from young kids who just caught the biggest fish of their lives never gets old .... There is nothing better than taking kids fishing and watching their eyes light up. Kudos to you Captain!

  10. Finally got a chance to get on the lake and look for some silver. Was honored to be accompanied by one of my brothers who is a retired blackhawk pilot. He hasn't fished much in the last few years and asked him if he wanted to take an exploratory trip for silver fish. Got up to camp Tuesday afternoon and the usual spots didnt produce much except small bows, finally copper rod fires with a good RIP and we bring an extremely skinny Male to the net.......with lack of seeing bait balls this was concerning to me. We finished with another keeper bow and had some thinking to do about today's plan. First thing this morning found my temp and took a chance at staging copper and core above and out of the temp. First spot no takers, second spot, no takers, third........game on.....and the circling began.....bows, browns and smallmouth.....and we lost count......fought weeds, minimal fleas, and red boats but put the plan together......as always....coppers and cores for me......riggers were slow but took some of the biggest. West and east were both good as you'll see by pics......just be patient, stay committed to the top.....if you catching Lakers, adjust, and dont leave em to find them. Remember to circle and adjust speed. Ran 2.5-3.0 on surface.......color didnt matter. Kept a couple, returned most, and they shot straight down to get out of the bath water. Great day over all. Hardly and jumping.....they wanted to stay down and were still full of it in the net.

Great work! Do you run planer boards?

  11. Going to head to Owasco this afternoon and leave the boat in for the weekend. Was wondering how others are making out. Haven’t fished her since the derby there. Cayuga has been good to me but the girlfriend really wants me to take her down for dinner at the lakeside restaurant so giving in. Any info is appreciated.

Fleas weren’t to bad last weekend but some days they are worse than others. Laker action is nonstop on flasher fly combos in 100 fow on dipseys. Tons of marks at 30-50 which are likely rainbows and browns but I cannot seem to get them to strike. Side scan shows they are 50’ out to the side so if your using planer boards you may have better luck then me.

    Good luck!!
