  1. so i bought a new to me boat. It has a standard starting battery that everything is hooked to that works fine. The first thing that I did was to add my small honda outboard as a kicker. This means when I troll the electronics run on the battery with no charge going to it and it slowly drains. I keep an eye on the voltage and occasionally start the main to charge it. the honda has a 12 V charging system built in. I ordered the plug and its in the mail. My question is can I get some copper cables and hook the charging plug direct to the battery or do i need some sort of charging unit in between? also what guage wire should i get for this. I also have a deep cycle battery that I keep both as a spare and for the electric troller (rarely used). should i just unhook the electronics from the main and run them to the deep cycle up front? can i hook the charging cables direct to the deep cycle. Right now I only have the graph/gps that runs full time than the bilge and radio and such but i intend to get electric riggers by the end of this season or early next season. I would rather have the electric set up ahead of time for that. my previous boat only had the honda which was a pull start and the only electronic was a graph which could run on the battery for about a week straight so i dont know much about this.
  2. i know there are a dozen other posts like this but I dont get to share to often on wensday I purchased a new to me boat. spent saturday getting it ready and took it out for the first time sunday. got out late around 11 saw the pack of boats figured that water was being worked hard so we stayed inside of them and fished 30-40 fow. turned out to be the right decision for us we didnt have our lines set for 20 minuets and had our first shot on a slide diver. ended the day with 6 kings and 2 small coho 4 of the kings were in the mid to low teens. Fantastic start for the new rig. I havent been able to get fresh silver kings in almost 20 years man it feels good and makes me just that much more excited to spend more time on lake O. one highlight was an 11 pounder that hit a flat line and before i could grab the rod was a good 4 feet out of the water. gotta love those high speed jumps. hope the kings stick around.

Back problems stink I hope it improves for you I used to work for a hospital and did a lot with the spine surgeon. Its deffinatly not something to mess around with if there is pressure on the nerve root it can cause problems for everything downstream of there. thats what my issue was in my neck it would cause first my sholder than eventually my whole arm to first hurt than go numb than go weak. working position had a lot to do with it for me I ended up changing careeres and a few bad habits with posture and it helped tremendously but for a while it would be scary I would go to lift something with my right arm and had no streangth.

take 4 whiskeys and go fishing in the morning. If you dont drink than than a steady alternating combo of ibuprofin and acetiminafin goes a long way got me through some major neck issues untill the root cause could be resloved.
  5. with manuall riggers its easier to get depth with wire dipseys. you can also use smaller size dipseys in conjuction with your riggers for depth without having to crank as much cable out. All that said if you can afford it definatly get the charter as it will give you a base of knowledge to expand on. This site is great for info but can almost be overload sometimes. start simple get comfortable than expand on it.
  6. your welcome I'm a bit odd in that I read the regs book every year when i get my license at least for all the waters i fish

how bout just a pic of the boat? I look forward to those all winter. i'm getting a new to me boat this year that will open up a bunch of new water for me but I'm still jealous of your rig
  8. from the DEC site if you catch them in Lake Ontario you can transport them and use them anywhere in the lake ontario transportation corridor this was a new reg a couple years back. You cannot take them to a different body of water though weather live dead fresh frozen or salted. for that they have to be commercially packaged by a means other than freezing. Collection, Use and Transportation of Personally Harvested BaitfishAny person who has a fishing license1 or is entitled to fish without a license may collect2 minnows (except carp and goldfish), killifish, mudminnows, darters, sticklebacks, stonecats, smelt, alewives and suckers for personal use in hook and line fishing only (sale prohibited) by angling and with the gear types listed below. All other species must be immediately returned to the water. See special regulations for personally harvesting alewife and blueback herring in the Hudson River. Baitfish or other legally taken fish species intended to be used as bait may only be used in the same water body from which they were caught for bait in hook-and-line fishing. These fish may only be used in a water body where it is legal to use fish as bait. Transportation of personally harvested baitfish overland by a motorized vehicle is prohibited except within a designated overland transportation corridor. See dip net exceptions for smelt, suckers, alewives and blueback herring taken for human consumption. Baitfish Collection Table
  9. i actully tried it once with a yellow bird it works to a point you can only run one line on it but gets away from the boat and you can fight the fish and not the board. overall its worth it to get big boards though. they will pull to the side better. if space is tight you can get collapsable ones. I also hang mine off the mast when not in use to get them up out of the way.
  10. if your targeting landlocks and lake trout it sounds like you are fishing the fingerlakes? One thing I would highly recomend that i have not seen mentioned dont get medium heavy rods get light action or medium light at the most for your riggers. if your in it for the fun than you want as much fight as you can get and lighter rods are the way to go. i'm a big fan of the classifieds and ebay. you can get gear of a better level for the price of low end if your willing to get used especially if you just testing the waters. if you are fishing the fingers you should search the finger lakes section on this site it will help a ton with putting some fish in the boat in a lot less time to give you a better idea how you feel about trolling.

he could just be luring the angler into the water to eat him
  12. smells like a seth green rig. thats a whole different topic
  13. storm is my favorite but have had success on a variety of spoons and sticks combinations that include orange gold black or pink/watermelon. and always have a firetiger/perch pattern. I have decided that color catches everything must suck to be perch.
  14. an interesting thought the herd mentality might actually help if everyone is fishing right on top of each other than the other good perch spots are being left alone. This might serve to preserve the population. If the herd moves than the that opens up the previously pounded grouds to recover. Seneca can be a tough lake to perch fish which only serves to encourage look for boats method which is annoying if your the boat out looking for you own spot. Now to completely push short sighted selfish politics, the alewives are killing the perch population therefore they must be controlled the best way to do that is to stock kings in seneca man I would love to see that happen.
  15. I know i'm in the minority here but I like short leaders for lead core 20ft and under sometimes as short at 7ft I feel it imparts better action to the lure and almost makes it whip a little bit and triggers a reaction bite especially on the real short leaders. Sometimes forcing a quick response is better than going to stealthy and giving them a chance to study the bait. I found this out when i had a fray in a longer leader and cut it back and was to lazy to do a new leader so just left it short ended up turning the day hectic now I usually keep at least one rigged short
  16. um 20 is 66.66% or 2/3 of 30 so yes it only has a little over 60% of the streangth. I would think that is implied by the labeling sorry couldn't help it I'm a bit of a math nerd.
  17. i ended up making it out lauched around 3:30 there is a line of ice bergs and debris coming off the pier and going east. was enough room to sqeek through between the bergs. We headed east dodging ice chunks all the way and set up by the point. started setting up just short of the creek and didnt get the third rod set and the first one had a fish on. ended up being a perfect eater sized brown. we circled there for the next couple hours and ended up getting 6 more hits but couldnt get them to stay buttoned up. saw them hit big bounce of the rod even felt a couple for a sec but than would just pull free. I checked all the hooks nice and sharp just one of those days. at least we had some action so I know the rig is running right. lot of logs and ice chunks out there. Its gonna be a good spring
  18. anyone make it out today or is the river open? going to be leaving around 2 want to know if its worth the drive the webcam looks like the lake is calm
  19. got my fingers crossed for tomarrow afternoon. hoping its open if not there is always seneca
  20. upolstery in the car and clothing has claimed a few as well a little fustration and impaitence to get the line in the water can be detrimental
  21. that is a great video except hes a lefty that is definatly on my bucket list. At a pretty decent price for all thats included to. Did I see on the website that rum is included? I'm trying to talk my wife into sending me but its not going well.
  22. i did it a couple times but farthur south to the poughkeepsie area (wife has family there). Tacke was easy for me egg singers barrel swivels and circle hooks found a bait ship with blood worms and was set. find fish on your graph and drift in them with the bait suspended at the depth of fish. got some off of the bottom but did better up high bottom was also more prone to other fish like catfish and eels. put the egg singer on your main line tie on the swivel than a flouro leader than the circle hook. I used my downrigger rods set them in a holder parallel with the water turn on the clicker and put the real in neutral. when they started to hit pick up the rod and when they swim away click the reel in gear and hold on the circle hooks made it easy. It was a blast I wish i could talk my wife into doing again. there is a website stripers247.com that is a great place for some info both on timing the run and how to fish it. we did mid may each time which worked for there.
  23. did make it out friday the ice was decent than but the shore ice is showing signs. met bottom feeder out there nice guy good meeting you thanks for the Jig. I got a bunch of hits early and thought I was in for a good day than after the first 45 mins that was it I couldnt buy a hit the rest of the time moved all over must have fished 20 holes of varying depths moving all around. Found one school of bait bot excited but got no hits out of it. seemed pretty slow around me saw one fish caught and that was early. was at least very nice weather for what will likely be my last trip of the year. I'm ready for boat season only 6 inches of snow left in the driveway. maybe next weekend if not than the one after would be a good day to fish than stop at the watkins sale
  24. could have been worse could have been an eel
  25. worried about honeycombed ice as well it can be thick but a lot weaker than it looks. supposed to drop below freezing again for tonight maybe tighten it up just enough for friday. definatly gonna have to have a backup plan. If anybody goes out thrusday or especially friday I would love to see an ice report. I have the second half of the day off so i wont be getting there till 1 or 2
