  1. I usually run spin doctors with flies only and run 10-20 feet leads behind the ball. I run a 21" leader for the fly. If I run a lure with anything it's a dodger or pro-troll, but I prefer to run lures clean with no flasher. Blacks releases work well they are all I use. I almost never have tangles with these set-ups. Heavy leaders are important with spin doctors because of all the action they have you should have a wipping action with them, you may not get that with thinner leaders. Just my 2 cents.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

I was out yestersday enjoying the great weather but didn't have a great catch day but it was nice to be out. I marked tons of bait between 90-120 fow but couldn't seem to give them what they wanted but did manage one small king on a nbk in 100 fow about 80 feet down. There were lots of fish in the bait schools just few takers, I did manage one screamer for about 20 seconds though. Can't wait to get out and try again, not till next weekend though :( I can't seem to figure out depths with my new wire rods though, I have a chart for using mono with mag dipsys, it said 250ft out for mono should get around 80 feet down but I was dragging bottom with 200 feet of wire out in 100 fow!!!??? There must be a big depth difference. Can anyone help me with this I am using 30lb 7 strand with a 2.5 setting on my divers.

  3. You can't go wrong with at least 30lb mono and when using wire on dipsy rods the fleas get cut off when then hit the twillie tip or the first eye. There are two kinds, the spiny water flea and the fish hook water flea. The fish hook is the biggest problem because it can hang on to thicker lines. They are a major pain in the a**. If you get a clump of them on the end of your line pull the line back like a bow and let it snap from your fingers, you may have to repeat this several times to clear them. Also you can smack the end of your rod off the boat and most will fall off.

  4. Last year I started off the season with 20lb p-line when the kings started running good and ended up breaking off about 5 flasher fly set-ups, not good. So now I went to 45lb seagur floro leaders, no more break offs. I went with the 45lb seagur premier leader line, I got in off e-bay for $20 for 25 yds it will last for quite a while when only using 8-10 feet at a time.

  5. Here is a good recipe that I love. You will need:

half stick of real salted butter

    a tsp of minced garlic

mrs. dash garlic and herb spice

    cajun seasoning

    pepper

    onion powder about half tsp

    foil

a whole salmon or trout fillet

Lay a big piece of foil on the top rack of your grill cut 4 slices of butter and lay on the foil. Rub half the minced garlic on the bottom of the fillet then place directly over the butter. Fold up the sides of the foil so the butter does not leak out. Sprinkle the mrs.dash, onion powder, pepper and cajun seasoning on thetop of the fillet and leave foil open then melt the rest of your butter and pour on top. Cook untill golden brown. I am sure you will love it!!

P.S. I usually add a few large chunks of wood from an apple tree to the coals or just set it directly on the rack above the flame if you have a gas grill. Any wood would work though to give it a little bit of smoke flavor.

  6. Nice job! There is always at least one dick out there, last year when the salmon were in heavy I was out trolling and there must have been 50 boats out that were trolling east west direction but 1 stubborn SOB refused to in a small boat and trolled north south. When he got near my boat he refused to turn even after hitting my horn and damn near ran right in to my boat if I had not turned in the last second. Needless to say I had a few choice words flying out after that one.

  7. Thanks but are you using some kind of float with them as in (bobber) or just drifting on bottom with the current? I usually only use egg sacs for salmon I don't have a lot of experience with them for steelhead.

  8. Depending on what time of year you fish you will have to change out the dipsy's or deeper divers for that time of year or water conditions. I use the walker deeper diver 124mm for the warmer months when the thermocline sets up because you can get down to 80 plus feet with them, you won't get that deep with the smaller sizes and in summer I fish down to 100ft or more sometimes to find good temps.

  9. Thanks I will have to try that, I just got a white cure that is supposed to make them a natural color and it says to add water then put the cure in with the eggs but several other cure directions say no water because it takes some of the natural scent away. I am not sure what works best I guess I will have to try a few ways and see what works.

  10. This is a little off the usual topics about trolling but I have been doing a lot of steal head fishing and wanted to try to cure some eggs myself and was wondering if any of you have any tips or instructions how to cure them. There seems to be tons of cures out there some say use water some say no water. I have never tried it before but it doesn't seem to be to difficult. Thanks.

  11. I wanted to try and target Lake trout this year I catch a few of them here and there by accident but I would like to try and target them a few times this coming year. Any suggestions on tackle would be much apprieciated. I have tons of tackle for everything else just nothing specifically for Lake Trout.
