  1. I am posting this for a very good friend of mine, he has several of these tip downs that he makes himself and they work great I have several of these that I use all the time as well. They are very inexpensive so be sure to buy many!!! Here is a picture of them, there are three different types to choose from they all work the same just some are a little more expensive to make. The one to the far left that is made from the wood dowel is only $6.00, and the other two to the right in the picture are $10.00 a piece. You can contact him at 315-343-5932

  2. A lot of guys on here are selling the older fishhawk 840 units if you want something cheap, I used one of those for years they work fine just bounce around a little bit (temps). They give you temp and speed. Take a look at the classified sections in here. Just a suggestion if you don't want to spend much. The depth raider and sub-trol work great also.

  3. I think you will be better off with 30lb mono and a 20lb or less leader for early season. Otherwise you will have to take off the 20lb and put 30lb on in the middle of summer when the water fleas come out in huge numbers. I made that mistake last year and had to change 6 rods to 30lb. Fleas will stick like crazy to 20lb but no where near as bad with the 30lb.

  4. I don't like the weights with the curved tails because they don't track straight, I had a few a couple years ago and had major problems with them, lines tangled, even got the weights tangled once. I now only use the torpedo weights that a-tom-mik sells on his site and they track great, have very little blow back and I have never had any problems since. When letting out line regardless if it is wire, mono or braid I always just loosen the drag just enough to let out the line smoothly and never free spool. I have learned the hard way many times and have had to respool several reels due to birds nests from free spooling. Once I free spooled a dipsy rod with wire on it and it made such a mess that we had to junk all the wire and buy a new spool and it's not too cheap.

And blacks releases or the cheaper dubro are all I use as well they work great and also help the weight track great running off the downrigger cable that way you only use one eye and the currents will make the ball turn instead of your line. Way less problems with those.

  5. I was planning on fishing sandy pond this saturday and was wondering if anyone knew what kind of condition the ice was in after all the snow we have had. The last I had heard last week it was 3 to 5 inches thick but that was before the warm weather and the snow.

  6. Awsome deer, never heard of a buck still in velvet in december. Very cool!!! I always wondered if you can preserve the velvet on the rack if you mount the deer head, any one know? You hear alot about people taking mule deer out west with velvet still on but I am sure it's due to early seasons. Never heard of a whitetail around here with it on this late, the hormone thing makes a lot of sense though.

  7. While going through some fishing pictures from this summer I found this one that I took on my way back in at night to wrights landing after fishing the afternoon. This pic was taken on a warm calm august night. It sure gives me cabin fever to look at it. Only 4 or 5 more months till trolling season again (yuck)!!!!

  8. Chowder I think you are right on with what you said. I have a lot of friends that flat out refuse to shoot a doe on there property but will shoot any legal buck they see (and have probably about a 8 doe- 1 buck ratio) on there property with all there family members hunting them as well. That to me makes no sense at all! Their excuse is the does make the babys and they want more deer on there property!!! This year with about 10-12 of them hunting their land they have only killed one buck, 2 years a go they shot 10 in the same area and these were mostly small deer. Here is what I think and believe, 1st If you shoot every buck on your property you will not have any bucks to breed those 100's of does that you have to look at all the time and 2nd if you have any mature bucks left on your property after killing every buck you see and do not shoot does to bring that doe-buck ratio down any mature breeding bucks will have MANY deer to breed and no competition, and will not need to go far to find a doe and will usually just die of old age due to that. If you take some does and drop the ratio down it will make any mature buck want to wander the woods looking for a doe to breed which makes it easier to find/harvest them due to more activity/movement. You MUST take does to properly manage your land, not all of them but just enough to even out that ratio and let the little bucks walk. It may take a few years to see results but it is way worth the wait when you start shooting 8, 10, and 12 pointers instead of spikes and 4 pointers. Thats my 2 cents.

p.s. This will only work on your own land or land that has light hunting pressure. Most areas of state land are hunted very heavy and people shoot everything that moves so if you hunt only on state land and all you see is doe's you still need to take some in order to balance the herd. Regardless of where you hunt do not hesitate to shoot a doe unless there are not many in that area or the buck ratio is higher than doe. Another problem with too many doe's is inferior bucks get to breed as well because there are just so many (girls) too choose from and the quality of your bucks will go way down.

  9. Great story!!! I almost shot myself in the foot with my 50 cal muzzle loader 2 years ago. After killing a buck up north I had reloaded quickly and forgot to put the safety back on due to being over excited and as I went up to it while walking an article of clothing got caught on the trigger and boom!! It hit the ground about 12 inches from my right foot, I had to change my underware after that one. That was the first and last time that will ever happen again!!
