  1. You definetly want to get your fish finder first before the temp. probe even as valuable a tool that the probe is you do not want to be dropping it down without knowing what depth you are in and risk loosing a couple hundred dollar unit. This time of year in order to find the right temp you may have to drop down to over a hundred feet to find it if your in 90 fow you wont find that right temp you will most certainly find the bottom though looking for a good temp and possibly loose your temp. probe.

  2. I used to have a lot of problems with the cannon balls not tracking good and they tend to have problems with having more blowback then I switched to the 13lb torpedo weights and problem solved no more problems. Also switching to a blacks type release allows the weights to move freely in currents and turns without throwing your lures all over and getting tangles.

  3. Gota bite,

If you get a break off , a king with a FF set up the king will fight it till it ezhausted and float on the top and most likely die. there's a good chance of picking him up within a half hour of the break off. You may even see a seagull sitting next to him waiting for it to die. I all ways check floating salmon for hardware. 8)

Thats very true!!! Two years ago I lost one of my favorite set-ups to a screamer then about ten minutes later I saw a fish floating and sure enough there was the fish with my flasher and fly in its mouth it ended up being a huge coho.

  4. I am looking at the chart right now.

The ratio is about 2.7 on average using a 3 setting.

The slope of the rest of the lines is almost the same for 0, 1 and 2 settings - you just gain around 5 feet for each setting you are away from 3. So 2 gets you 5 feet lower, 1 gets you 10 feet lower and 0 gets you 15 feet lower.

So use the line out divided by 2.7 formula and then add 0, 5, 10 or 15 ft depending on your setting.

Where did you get that chart that seems to be a lot closer to where my dipsy's are running, when I use the 3 to 1 I hit bottom when I should have been a lot higher up. Thanks for that info. Makes more sense.

  5. Use wire, mono is terrible it's very hard to release the dipsy and you can't get as deep as wire plus wire has better hook-up rate due to no stretch. Run wire directly to dipsy, then a good strong section of mono or floro thats at least 40 lbs after the dipsy. I use 45lb floro leader line about the length of your dipsy rod, (works great and will not break), so mine is 9 1/2 foot aprox. Then attatch fly to the end with a very good swivel. 21 inch fly leader measure from end of hooks to end of leader. That should get you started after that you can play with different lengths. There are many topics in here on this type it in the search and you will find all you want on this, but this is how I do it. You do not need a snubber as long as you have a good strong leader to your dipsy.

  6. Thats good info, I was setting up at a little slow speed (friend driving boat) was deploying temp. probe at the time but down speed was mainly 1.8-2.6 all day I would say it did happen while heading more with the current, I don't believe it happened against the current but either direction I basically tried to keep the same range down speed. I couldn't find the fish so I was all over with depths and speeds. Oswego was very slow for me yesterday but better for others. I was alone out there except for 2 boats way away from me from 10am till 3pm.

  7. I was out yesterday trolling with my wire rods and I had them out 270ft on a 2.5 setting in 110 fow and I was dragging bottom?????? A few weeks ago I was fishing the same depth for lakers out 290 to 300 ft of wire and never touched bottom, any thoughts as to why any one? The only difference was yesterday it was choppy with about 2 footers. The other days it was calm. Using the basic 3 to 1 ratio for wire I figured I should be 100 feet down for 300 ft of wire (30lb). The only thing I could think of is maybe with the wave action up and down it may have caused it to dive deeper?

  8. I was out today west of the nuke plant I had 5 fish on that i think were all lake trout thats what i was targeting anyway because they seem to be one of the only fairly reliable fish right now but only landed one and lost one at the boat and the others were only on a short time. I fished 115 to 130 fow.
