  1. The charts are for an idea only IMO. speed, what you have on etc. affect depth. Just throw it out on a 2.5 setting if the fish are down say 50' ,start it at 80 & let it click out slowly till you bang bottom or hook up . Don't try & get to exact w/ it. I think thats part of the attraction of them & makes them so good .

  2. I was talking to the guy at the show & told him I like to use the slide diver once in a while & it works when nothing else will ;I to have on rod w/ braid & a 25 ' 20# tippet .

Told him I won it as a door prize many years ago & it is  pink /purple. He said that color was never released to the market & some probably were sent out for promotional .

  3. Well run show w/ a lot of nice displays & vendors. I could have spent a fortune there if I let myself. Got some good deals on some stuff I needed. Best was the ATOMIC flies I thought. There were about 100 people in line when I got there about 9:45

Was a little crowded but thats how it goes.

  4. What gets me about our distinguished Gov is that the very people that he has insulted & said are not welcome are the majority of the citizens that are paying the bills. All I here from the left is that Repub/ Conserv party is not inclusive. Are you kidding me ?His comments and attitude is ? Ive heard our President say pretty much the same.

The   NY residents that  have the means & leave the state  to get away from the high taxes take their money with them & leave the burden to the rest of us that remain. Not condusive to a good economy, which needs growth.

Look at the property taxes of your surrounding homes & add it up. Factor in the income taxes, sales taxes, fees & anything else they can dream up to take your money. And it still isn't enough.

We are THE WORST state for taxes & buisness in the NATION. But the Gov ,with a straight face ,says "NY is open for buisness". Why would anyone in their right mind move here ?

He cares not about the state or all it's  residents .All that matters is he  and his party stay in power and eliminating the opposition is a sure way to do it.

     Wake up .

  5. How are the Oak Orchard  powers at be  going to spend prize money for being  " Fishing Capital of the Universe"?

My bro said that he felt they wanted to spend it on exposure or advertizement. I suggested to him  maybe some of it on a Fishing tourney day for the disabled Vets   & picnic after. Could get national exposure. Kick some gas  money to any Captain who would be involved . Who deserves a day on the water more? Just a thought.

  6. Spring  Loc out of the Oak west pretty much was a lake trout fishery . A lot of East winds did not help. After that  Did not go out really till the Orleans & Fished hard till the last day of the Fall LOC. Up untill the last week of the LOC I  feel we did very well, w/ mostly Kings ,many matures & some nice Steelheads as well. Last week of the LOC was tough. But when I got my little boat out & trolled out in front of the creekmouth mid September , I slayed them.

Footnote- I only went offshore once this year. Fished a lot of 60-150'.Saw tons of bait at times.

  7. The Firing Pin . Has indoor range, Gunshop, training , etc  . 8240 Buffalo rd. Bergen NY.

Freind of my son. Brand new building , My son shot at the range last night & said it was nice. Check it out.

  8. I have 2 diver rods , both about 10 ' one is a Diawa Accudepth, & I don't like it at all . Very Fast/Stiff  action that I think costs me fish.

The other is a Fenwick  blank I made myself.  It has more of a slower or Parabolic action .I cut 6 " off the tip of this rod w/ was 10'6" to start.  The ass of the rod is about 1/2 way up .I love this rod. I have an Eagle claw w/ a broken reel seat which was about the same.

The fish have more leverage on me w/ the Diawa than the FenwicK. I get more tired w/ the Diawa than the Fenwick, which are about the same length.

It's not so much the length but the Action IMO.

I run 65 Lb power pro on both  for the last few years W/ no flea issues &  caught a  bunh of fish on them & see no reason to switch . I will add a wire rod to the lineup this year cause T- bro states that he catches 5 to 1 wire to braid. Looks like I'm going to be needing a WAY bigger cooler this year. Hope my arms can take it.

  9. At least there are a few out there that share my thoughts. Knowledge  trumps all. Had the conversation just last night on the way home w/ my wife and sons about buying a speed /temp unit. They were going to surprise me w/ one under the tree but did not know which one to get.

I am very reluctant to get one. Reason being that it is a constant conversation on my boat as to how fast we are going. We seldom go the same speed for more than 10 min.No buckets in, one bucket , two buckets, kick up throttle, slow down, which direction. Cannot tell you the times I have pulled or dropped a bucket & there was a  hit within 1 min.

While all that is going on our lures  are  constantly changing speeds. This triggers strikes, ESPECIALLY on slow days. While some of you are trying to go 2.36841 MPH, my lures are going .5 to 4 MPH.That's an exageration , but you get my point.  When I  got my first paper graph, my eyes were glued to it & I forgot to fish for a while. Don't want the same thing happening

  10.  I have 2 short arms on my little boat. No  probs w/prop at all. If You get the long arms you will need weight retrivers of some kind. Don Supon is correct that you have to really think about where to mount all things before drilling holes. Very important! Get someone who has done the lake thing to maybe help you w/ the layout.

  11. Befroe fleas, all I ran was 12 & 15 and caught a ton of kings on it.I used pink ande, Trilene XT or Stren. Spring I still do the same thing but now Big Game . After Fleas show  Put 150' of 30 , then a  20' leader of 15-20 w/ spoons.  20 for the flashers.  I  would use 12 lb good mono over flouro, knowing what I do now.

  12. I looked into it a little more. After further review , My ruling on the field is confirmed. All the things I have experienced ,I now know why.

Flour doesn't stretch.    Not true, it stretchs more than mono. Only problem is it does not stretch back , like mono. So it gets weaker each time it's stressed. Which explains my fly fishing experiences with it. No stretch is good for bass type worm jig as it transmits strikes better.

It is also very dense, which makes it not absorb water & also sink , good for fly fishing egg/nymph types,

It is also abrasion resistant, because it is harder, but not abrasion proof. It fractures& cracks, which weakens it. Kind of breaks like glass. Ever cut a brick w a hammer & chisel? I am not one to retie every time , so this explains my breakoff at the fly. espcially between the two hooks of the tourney rig, has to be major stress there & knots big time. That initial strike on a tight line of dipsey w/ no snubber/ Dude!

It's invisable to fish. Well sort of . it is to a point, how much remains to be determined.  How much does it matter on a flasher fly? I run 65 PP to my dipsey 5-8/ 40# big game to flasher so how much does that 18" + - really mean to the fish 80 or so down from the surface in green water ?   Most underwater video I have seen shows a salmon attacking from the rear , so how much do they see of the leader.

I think the stiffness of the flouro is the most important factor. The rest for the most part under normal conditions is hype.  I will experiment this season w/ some other  options.

  13. Durability? I  lost 2 flies & had 2 more  of the trebs break off of 50 # Atomic tourney rigs this year.  I use 40# big game from dipsey to flasher & that NEVER breaks. It's the weak link in the rig as far as I'm concerned.

Flouro might be  best fresh ,but to me takes no abuse ,has no stretch & is not forgiving. I am not sold. I do think it works good for the flies because of the high tensel strength which makes it stiffer & the flasher  whips the fly around better. The invisibility under most conditions is overrated IMO.

Fly fishing, I have lost so many fish  & flies to flouro I am at the point of taking it out of my vest. And it will break anywhere on the tippet. 6 # Maxima UltraGreen breaks Harder than 3x 9.2# or 4X 7# Mirage .I only put it on when I have to.It sinks the fly,it's best attribute to fly fishing IMO.

Bought some  60#  Orvis Super Strong  mono tippet material for $2  on a sale table in Lake Placid that I like.  Should have bought more.

  14. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I fished the Oak west & most Spring derby & caught mostly lakers this past  year w/ a few kings mixed in. ( Year before was not typical cause of extremly warm winter). Had Boards out a lot to catch a stray bow but not one on.

This  Aug  was great untill the last week in Aug, Then got great the second week in Sept till the end for matures.

I think the reason the kings stay in say  Ollcott to Sandy is because of the Temp/Green water they & the bait like so much. Also the currents & maybe more Oxygen/life in the water from the Niagara Flow. You can find good water most times within 10 miles of port .

Don't fish east end but from the sounds of it you guys fish a lot deeper after lake sets up  than we have to out this way . I think because the prevailing westerly winds pile up the warm water down that way.

Thought about it after the lakers being disallowed last year. The  Kings are suppose to be the Premier fish of the Great lakes. Lakers save the day for us ,but they are kind of like carp. To bad about the Steelhead.

The first , and might I add ,the most important part of the fishing equation is location. And time of year dictates where it's best. It's kind of nice it changes so everyone has a chance.

  15. After the talk on here about some of you guys redoing you boats , I talked w/ the spray foam guy the does the insulation on new homes. He tells me that the closed cell is what you want on boats . Said the chemical for that is pretty expensive. I asked him how much & he thought it to be around 300-400  for him to do it.

  16. I don't have down speed and temp & I feel I do pretty well out there. Agree w/ Spoonfed that I fish the marks, temp or not . Also agree w/ T Bro that I have done pretty well w/ a blank screen, mostlySummer to late summer  offshore. Active fish swimming around out there are in & out of the tranducer cone so fast you may get only a slash .

My son & bro are on my case to Add a temp/speed unit & this year I may. Can't wait to catch like 3 times the fish I get now.

  17. Give 50 yards minimum on the sides & 150 yards minimum or more crossing behind someone assuming they don't have a fish on. Watch which way  someone coming at you is trying to head for and make a  very deliberate  move one way or another to show which way you intend to go.

If trolling parallell w/ shore and someone is inside of you going the same way,or coming at you, Try not to push them in shallower( Pet peeve of mine).

Generally ,keep an eye out & your head on a swivel.Easy for boats to sneak up on your blind spot. Stay away from eveyone or just outside of them till you learn.

  18. I buy spoons from Garage sales & off the bargin table as long as they are what I want. Also the non producers I have  from last year . Zip strip them and you are good to go . I use spray cans & model paints w/ a small brush also. White primer under floures. colors . Then clear coat. Make sure paints are compatable. Stencils are a good way to go.Also tapes & eyes to add flash . I have had some real winners over the years. A bunch of duds also. They get repainted.

Can do the same w/ lures but they are a little harder. Can't seem to get the metalics to shine as much as I would like.
