  1. I shoot the power belts and B209 in my paramount with the 285 ELR. 98 grains weighed and I’m cutting holes at 100. It’s never going to be bullet to bore, custom muzzleloader accurate but I believe the .45 cal ELRs perform just fine. Every deer I’ve killed with them is just as dead as my TC Omega deer and my Savage Smokeless deer.

That said, I certainly would prefer to have some more bullet competition in the .45 space without having to smooth size my own bullets.

Legacy sounds like he just got a bad product which is super time consuming and ultimately frustrating as all heck.

    Thanks Bill.....

I have done both.... Drifted out in 200 feet of water and anchored.

If you want true decoying birds, then I would anchor .... If your running a dog, you should anchor both ends of your long line and run 2-2.5 ft droppers from your blocks. No dog, anchor one end .. positioning the boat can be tricky .. if it's dead flat, the birds might be a little squirrel, but as a general rule they are pretty dumb when It comes to the boat.

I usually anchor parallel to the long lines... I usually anchor from the stern ( if it's calm) and do the shooting from the bow....

The trick to coming off anchor.... Let out enough anchor rode until your where you want... Tie a loop in your anchor line and put it around the cleat... On or near the end of the anchor line, attach a fender...once you shoot a bird, take the loop off the cleat, toss it overboard with the fender attached .. once you get the bird, come back, hook the fender, and then put the loop back on the cleat... Should be in the same position if your anchor is holding ..

Shooting sea ducks is fun .. just wish I found a way to cook em... Best of luck to you...

Thank you this is great info! We won’t be over a dog so I’ll probably just anchor the one end of the decoy string. If you only had a dozen, would you run two strings of six or one string of a dozen?

Also, how heavy of an anchor have you had to run to hold you steady out on the lake? Mind you we won’t be challenging any crazy weather.

    I appreciate your help!

  3. Gonna try to get after some long tails this late season out of my Alumacraft on the open lake (on nice days). I will have one longline with a dozen sqaw dekes out (wish had more but that will have to come with time).

My question is, should I run a setup where I anchor the longline and drop back perpendicular to the line and anchor the boat 20 yards off the dekes?

Or I have heard you can tie the line to the boat and drift with the dekes trailing the boat. Which sounds easier and potentially more appealing

I know the ideal setup would be 4 dozen dekes, a layout boat, retrieve boat, etc etc, but resources committed to this are scarce as I am just trying to plug a few divers and not destroy limits or setup a guide service. Just hopefully seeing if anyone has any tips on simple setups with minimal dekes. Thanks!

I know this is a post from a couple years ago, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where they buy their food plot seeds? I’m hoping to put in my first food pot next year and didn’t know if you were able to buy seeds locally or do you order them online? I live in the Syracuse area. Also, I’m looking to do this no till method.

I order most of my stuff online. Northwoods Whitetail Seeds is a good place to start.

  5. Here is my buck from yesterday. Very productive day from a deer seen perspective. My group passed on lots of small bucks and does through the morning, until this buck came walking through. Was a bit of a team effort as he essentially got bumped from person to person and I ended on the lucky side with being able to anchor him with a heart shot. A lucky and blessed morning that I got to spend with good people.

Had the pleasure of finding a tick imbedded in my stomach this morning yuk. Guess I need to go to the Dr’s tomorrow and get doxycycline. WTF

I’ve had many attached on me and I believe that if you remove them within 24 hours of attaching the risk of any tick borne disease is very low. So I believe an engorged tick would be the reason to scramble to the doctor, not a newly attached one.

Also I believe you would just monitor for symptoms and watch the bite site for the telltale bullseye (not always present with all Lyme cases).

Honestly I might ask the doctor to run a blood test for Lyme the next time I do blood work. I’ve had some odd nerve issues for years and I’ve wondered if Lyme might be at the bottom of it. That said I also did a round of antibiotics for a bite that did have the bullseye rash. So who knows.

Well  I started my all day sits today, although it was my 50th sit of the season.  I let one fly,  not my biggest buck but we have had some cool trail cam pictures and videos of him. It Was a bit nerve wracking as the blood trail was actually pretty crappy and we jumped him 5hours after the shot. Made me question where I actually did hit,  although it looked like a perfect shot.   But we went back in 2 hrs after and he was dead 50 yds from where we bumped him.    There was a couple bigger bucks I was holding out for but he gave me a perfect 25 yds shot  so I let it fly. And got  my dad and cousin out to help with the recovery  so that was fun!

That does look like a great shot. Do you have any idea what happened to the arrow once you field-dressed him? Maybe it kicked off a rib and deflected? Great buck all the same!

  8. Punched my tag on a buck I’ve had history with. Had him on camera the last 3 years and I know he is at least a 4 year old deer. Only issue is his rack took quite a step back this year. He always had a funky left side but I was shocked to see it turned into one unicorn antler. Was awesome to finally catch up with him after watching him all this time! He came in this morning trying to bully a little basket rack 5 pt around. I hemmed and hawed all off season on whether I would shoot him if given the chance, well he follows the little basket into my shooting lane at 22 yards and I made my decision 😂 He has a tanker body and a unique rack so I was pleased with my decision. Always nice to take a mature deer with the bow! I’ve included a trail cam pic from last year along with one from this year so you can see the antler downgrade he had.

Side note, I’m shooting the iron will wides and these broad heads just ZIP through deer. Double lung on him and he didn’t make it 35 yards from the shot site.

Availability? What availability lol? It's just crazy how busy things are, all the time. Self-inflicted wounds though -- ie, headed to ADK for a week of climbing and paddling soon. And don't even talk to me about treestands or clearing shooting lanes.

I think that we are in the midst of some strange astrophysical time compression thing.

Hahaha Amen, I feel like this summer has just been insane.

You were planting no till into buckwheat for a few years...what was the final take on that? Continued or moved on? We should really hook up for property tours, being so close to each other.

Final take on that process was that it worked super well! I just did not do that this year due to time constraints but I still did no till (controlled weeds with chemicals) and it is working very very well. I would definitely give you a tour of the place, just have to iron out your availability!

  11. Went with a plot screen (Northwoods Whitetail HD Screen) this year and installed a new .5 acre brassica plot in the middle of my property. Screened off a few other plots and i think it will pay off this year. Brassicas are the Northwoods Sweet Feast. Couple pics from my plots.

One with the blind is just a pure clover plot, no screen as it’s isolated enough. All the others have the screen you can see in the background.

I would continue to hit the 80-120 area with 1 1/2oz jighead an and a 4”white paddletail or 1 1/2oz to 2oz jigging spoon or blade bait. It can be done. Get a drift bag to slow your drift.

Do this and you def need the drift bag. Ontario Lakers are lazy and covering water till one bites is the name of the game. You want a slow drift, and toss your jig head in front of the boat, drop to the bottom, jig till you aren’t vertical and do it till your arms fall off. You will def catch fish.

Thanks for the 1-3 mph wind threshold. Sound like it has to be glasslike to no wind to comfortably venture out deep beyond shore

Yeah, that is smart. For the 400 - 500 ft trips, I like the 1ft or less forecast. Just too far is something goes wrong. You can def fish 100 - 200 in 1-3ft forecast though. We have done that quite a bit and its not the most amazing thing ever, but I never felt in danger.

  14. All I fish out of is my 18 ft Alumacraft out there and we beat the kings up pretty good. I don’t ever test the lake though. 2ft or less is my threshold. I almost never challenge a 1-3 forecast and I certainly don’t push beyond that.

Can’t say I’ve ever been caught in a weather event, as we are just that careful. Fishing to me is never worth worrying about sinking or dying.

A humbling day for me. Had a decent high teens maybe low 20 king break of my entire meat rig 20 feet from the boat. Reset and had another high teans break the line to the meat head 20feet behind the boat.

I was in 100feet, mag dipseys out 120 and 150.

That is very odd, I run 20 lb Trilene Fluro and I cannot remember the last time I diver rig break at the leader.

  16. All you have to do is drop your trolling motor, directional lock it on like a 3-6 setting (depending on wind and waves) and then get your kicker on a steady low push. Doing this has revolutionized my small boat trolling and essentially turned into a low cost autopilot.

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck  catching sawbellies on sabiki rigs in deeper water say 40-50 feet down  over deeper water.. I know they hit the sabiki rigs  when they are spawning near shore, but out in mid lake i see schools of them acres across  and was wondering if they  would hit the rigs in those places.. I don't troll, and I'd like the option of throwing a live sawbelly down 30 or 40 feet while jigging.. I don't like buying them as they are a pain to keep alive once it gets warm out.

Catching a few here and there  on an "as needed" basis makes more sense to me, than buying a dozen for $15 and watching 9 of them drop dead in an hour or two.. Never tried a sabiki in deeper "offshore" water, and am wondering if they work.... bob

Yeah they work everywhere there are schools of Alewife. I just get on top of big ball of them and then I target the ones at the top. Usually, the fish that bite the best. I hooked a big Atlantic last year jigging the sabiki in a bait ball! Almost landed it too!

  18. I believe in WNY, lack of turkey has far more to do with human reduction of habitat and nest predators.

racoons are #1 in my book in critters to kill. And accordingly I have trapped close to 20 on 40 acres in the last year.
