  3. Im down in northern NJ and this week it seems like the rut is in full swing. Def earlier then usual. Im tagged out but right now is the time to be in the woods. My son and I were just in the yard and I grabbed my grunt tube and a bleat can  and I hit the grunt about 3 times and tipped the can a few times and about 5 min later I hear the distinct sound of a deer hooves on dry leaves. Then a decent 8 comes walking right out of my quad trail on to my lawn. I love this time of year. Scrapes popping up all over this week too. I suspect in about a week or two the bucks will be locked down with the girls. Best time to sit all day is right now while they are on their feet. Good luck all!

  4. Play the wind and use it to your advantage. Im seeing more and more scrapes opening up this week. Id set a cam up near one that you could get a clear shot at. Don't touch the scape or branch. Be extremely careful and as scent free as possible.. Always be careful going in to the spot, try to stay quiet because until you have a cam or a visual you don't know when the bucks are checking it. If you don't bump him he will check it often. And once there is a hot doe its time to sit all day if you need to. I totally disagree about negative comments on setting up a cam. They are invaluable and if placed right there is a very good chance you can kill that buck. Also, one advantage to having a cam is you may be hunting a spike or a slingshot buck, The deer you suspect is making the scrapes may very well not be making them. It is very common for the scrub bucks to start making scrapes early. Once things start heating up the bigger bucks will take those scrapes over. Get a cam and see what your hunting for.

  5. I took this buck last week. Had no cam pics of him. In the early bow season in NJ you need to take a doe before a buck. I shot my doe on opening day. I went out sun afternoon and I was going to take another doe then I saw this guy coming down a run. Watched him rub a tree and mill around for about 30 min. It was getting dark and I didn't think it was gonna work out. He walked right to me but head on. At about 20 yards he turned broadside and was watching a few does. I took the shot and I knew it was a good shot. The problem was there was another buck there that I never saw. When I shot my buck he ran into thick stuff. Well at the same time I saw a deer (though it was my buck and I thought I missed!) circle around and was just standing there and I was thinking OMG I missed him!!! now it was getting to late to take another shot. So I sat and waited for the deer to leave and I backed out. I had a very sleepless night because I saw the shot I was positive I nailed him. Next morning I called out from work and went down to the woods and pulled my card from my cam. Checked the pics and saw a smaller 6 point. I looked for my arrow and couldn't find it. Then I saw blood! A LOT of blood. The Dead Ringer 2 blade Rampage broadhead did an amazing job. Trailed it for 70 yards and there was my buck. I was so pumped but only problem was the yotes got to him. Didn't do much ony at some of the hind quarter. Still a great hunt. So glad I followed my gut because I knew with out a doubt the shot was good but that other buck really threw me for a loop! Anyway here is my Buck..

  6. So I have cabin fever and browsing thru the forum and seeing the browns you guys are hitting is driving me nuts! So I brought my son up in Oct. to the salmon river. The water was low and there were plenty of fish. My son did fantastic, he listened and before long was playing the fish like a veteran. Watching him do battle with those kings was something Ive waited for since he was born. I cant remeber how many he got that weekend but it was the best trip Ive had up there in 25 years of fishing that river. Now he is hooked and I have a new great fishing buddy, well until he drops me for the chicks. LOL Anyway, Enjoy!
