  1. Believe it or not, a friend of mine caught and released a walleye at the south end a week before the opener this year on a fathead while perch fishing. I saw the photo myself, they didn't weigh or measure but looked to be around 5-6 lbs. I was amazed!

I have heard of a couple getting caught there over the past years, never have seen one myself.

  2. Barbecue sauce brushed on after its done is key!!!

And if you dont want all the grease with bacon..  use prosciutto instead..still absolutely fantastic with much less grease!

  3. Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt the NYS Tiger record taken from Otisco through the ice a few yrs ago and if my memory serves me correct there were actually 2 huge ice fish from there that year. Im assuming both were kept to weigh? Im with you justtracytrolling, Im all for a mild winter so the ice hacks cant get out. Sorry but true.

Those fish were kept for the wall, not to weigh. That tournament had live weigh-in on the ice. If they chose to release them , they could have.

There are far more tigers killed on otisco in the bass tournaments EVERY weekend than there are ice fishing.

Out of the 3 ice fishing derbies last year, I think they were 3 tigers caught that were over 36".

I know one that was safely released, 37"

A 41" went on the wall.

The other one, I don't know.

  4. Took my 2 kids out w Justin yesterday from 130-530. Started out looking for tigers with no luck. Decided to set up an easy downrigger spread with stingers spoons down around 30' . immediately my 5 yr old boy reeled in a 16" brown and then my 11 yr old daughter lost one at the boat. Things were quiet for a bit and then we came across a baitball and the daughter had a nice smallie on but lost it. Right after that she landed her first walleye ever! About 21" and 3.5 lbs. That was it for the day but had a great time with the kids. Thanks Justin!

  6. I believe it would take more than an entire ice season of no fish to try and come up with some kind of pattern on otisco. A machine to travel with, a couple good power augers and 5-6 guys willing to put in the time

  7. I also walked on water at black lake friday and saturday

Friday I probably caught 100 fish ...alot of throwbacks ..managed to keep 4  nice crappies a... dozen gills...saturday was super tough for me...i also got 1 perch that was like those...

it was nice to get on the ice for sure!

  8. No ice on the north side of the causeway old man.... there was a little bit started at the very northern end at the dam and turtle bay but that will be gone by tomorrow if it isnt already..

The north end to the narrows has locked up a couple of times but went soft again.  Just need a cold snap

  9. If I have to use my light to fix a lure or check it out , I look to the sky with it and check it out with the bait above my head or if you are on shore I look away from the water back up the shoreline.

  10. Definitely had a great time and had some great food with some great people. I thought the DEC presence was a bonus and it was good to have informal conversation with him and get answers and clarification as to why things happen the way they do.

Just a couple of nice smallies for Dad and I with a half dozen releases on the rigger and planers with nobody home.

I'm looking forward to future events like this!

It was great to meet everyone!

    Tim

  11. Yes , the fishing was painfully SLOW by our standards, however, when your boy says "Dad, this was the best fishing trip ever!" you know he had a great time!

It will probably be harder for him to want to fish for  little panfish now that  he has experienced the thrill of reeling in something bigger than 12"!

I held the rod while Ryan did the reeling and Justin did the netting!

Can't wait to get him out again along with my 10 yr old daughter. Keeps em away from the electronics and tv and enjoying what mother nature has to offer.

It was a great experience for him to catch the fish, clean the fish, eat the fish!

    Thanks again Justin/Tracy!

  12. Good stuff guys! Overfishing is certainly a concern BUT the difficulty of it and the time you go (night) or early am would negate that in my opinion.

I just dont think theres enough guys like Justin out there that DONT sleep!

And anybody who has been on otisco know that fishing during the day on the weekends is pretty useless AND dangerous with the amount of recreational boaters and lake crows (waverunners) on the lake.

  13. Whats everybody planning for opening weekend? Im not sure if otisco will even be thawed out! Hope we can get the boat in at least.

Yes completley with an average of 12" of ice probably right about now on all three of them.

You will have to go west from auburn for an opportunity to launch a boat.
