30# Maxima Chameleon straight to the lure for me. I get about 800' on a size 30 okuma. I found this line fishing the Niagara River as a teenager. It's the most abrasion resistant mono I've ever seen. Saved a ton in tackle since then

So what happens when you have a fish on and wind up to the split shot with another 50 feet of line out?
Take the split shot off. Just like taking boards off with a fish on.

All my worker comp premiums for my home improvement company go to the state's "general fund". It's ridiculous.

Yes wire directly to dipsey then as long of a leader as you can handle to your bait. I like 12' of 30# maxima chameleon mono. You can get by with out a Twilly tip but it will pigtail the wire quicker.

Thanks Kingslammin! Good to know as I'm usually a Point Breeze guy. I like Olcott launch for western excursions. Everything is there for convenience. Bait, fish cleaning station, boat cleaning station, ice, pinic tables, tackle, nice parking. Very clean and relaxing. Heated bathrooms and showers too! Its a great launch to clean out the big motor for 20 miles to the bar on a calmer day.

I usually launch at Olcott as I live in town. If heading to the bar, I like to launch in Wilson. The 10 mile run is soothing to me on calm seas.

Research 50/50 method for drop weights. Deep divers on braid can get down further than mono. 5 colors will go 5-7' per color depending on speed (2.0 - 5' , 1.5 - 7') you can always add weight to achieve greater depth if needed.

Just start simple and work extra rods into your spread as you get comfortable. There is no definitive recipe for success. We're all continuously learning.

You have way too many questions to help you properly. You need a hands on informative charter for a day with some buddies to have a whole bunch of your questions answered in a visual setting.

Yes!!!

If your fishing for eyes too, spool some braid on a couple reels for running sticks off the boards. 2 5 colors wouldn't hurt either, but you have to get comfortable running that spread. Again, I like a four Rod spread to keep it simple. That way when I hook a fish, I can turn quickly and go back through the same school and get another.

It's just a harder ramp to launch, and the parking space can be a premium, currents in the river can be a challenge. It's not bad but there are better launches. I've used it a couple times. Just prefer the park or Olcott for convenience.

Use the south launch, it's much better. I believe they are both getting some work done to improve for this year so we will see

Ok so 4 rods 2 riggers and 2 divers. What would my spools look like for that setup?
I definatly don't want a issue most if not all days I'll have my 6 yr old son and some wife and 4 yr old daughter so easy and consistency is what I want. Just want to go out and catch some fish and have fun.

1000' of wire on two reels. 30# maxima chameleon or your monofilament of choice on two reels. Be sure you tape the wire to the spool to prevent slipping. You will get years of use from these setups and you can adjust your leader to the target species using back to back uni knots on the 30# mono reels.

And your magda pro reels are fine. I'm going on 6 or 7 years with mine. A convector just has one more ball bearing and some stainless trim.

Just run a four Rod spread. Two wire divers and two riggers. You can turn on fish quicker and you will have less headaches. Just like Capt Vince said, keep it simple and you will make the most out of your bites and ultimately enjoy your learning curve. If you start deploying all kinds of junk lines on a small boat, you will have a mess with a feisty spring king when it gets near the boat. Trust me on this!!!

All of may is primetime for kings. April to early May is killer for lake trout. 50+ fish lakers per day is not uncommon. I would suggest booking a charter with one of the many experienced and capable captains out of the ports of Wilson or Olcott, and you will not only catch the fish you're after, but if you pay attention, you will gain the knowledge you seek to be successful on your own.

My buddy uses an old $400 three wheeler on early ice. Does just fine

Torpedo 19 strand has done well for me. Easy to cut the pigtails or kinks and retie on the fly. I have 1000' (minus the cuts) on 4 reels going into their 6th year of use. I'm not aware of any bulk spools though

I had to give up after my first season trying wire line (last summer). After losing a number of expensive rigs: flasher $15, Chinook Diver $20, Lure $8, boom $40 bucks a crack! I had enough. It seems the line would get get kinked, or twist, or tangled into my other lines, and what a mess. Not worth it, to me, literally. I use braid on my dipseys. I have a rod with blood run flea line if I need it. But, I am new to the salmon fishing so I was probably doing something wrong. But, I am NOT new to fishing, including fly fishing with all the required knots, since I was in my teens, so I am not so sure.
You were definitely doing something wrong. This will be my 6th season on 4 of my diver rods spoiled with 1000' of 19 strand torpedo wire. I only trim off 10-15' of pigtailed wire each spring, use Fish Doctors wire line knot with an overhand knot to seat the tag end and I'm good for another year.

235,000 jobs added last month. REDUCED the national debt by $60 billion. He's actually doing what he said he would in his campaign (which is unheard of). I am always going to be somewhat skeptical of a president, but I have more confidence in him than any other president we've had in my lifetime ( I missed out on the greatness of Ronald Reagan). Don't be too quick to condemn him based on the removal of 97% of EPA funding. He will be restoring most of that after the PORK is removed. We need to do this in all facets of our government. Not everybody is going to be happy, some will suffer worse than others, but we cannot keep spending money and printing more to make us feel like we're not in the catastrophic debt we are.
