  1. scarlet lily leaf beetle (Lilioceris lilii)

Just learned of this pest this year when my Easter lilis usually towering were short and losing their leaves.  These are voracious.   I used dust to stop them.

Maybe not the worst invasive species we have to deal with but if you or your spouse likes to have a nice flower garden, you may want to pay close attention to your flower beds.

  2. Justin, Good info on the Marina - I never heard that before.

If I am fishing near the docks I always look ahead for any fishing poles.  Sometimes cottage owners set their lines and then leave the dock.  They are not legal in doing so but I still want to make sure I am not infringing on their space.  No sense in stirring the pot if you don't have to.  Plenty of lake.

It is not always about being right or wrong but being neighborly.  There  are some outliers but for the most part mutual respect will win out everytime.

  3. Been waiting for this post.   Thought you must be doing something.  Congrats!

Too busy this year.  I will look you up in 2018.  Night casting was/is a blast.  Was thinking about it all weekend with those bright moons.

  4. When I was a kid we would take a piece of mister twister and cast with the fly rod from one dock to the neighboring dock.  It always amazed me how many big gills were under them.  If you threw a worm over there with a float you would get nothing but small ones.

  5. Be careful falling from Ivory Towers...

As humans we generalize and this goes for any group of people.  Its why many professions need to be wary of bad individuals within their demographic.  The same logic can be applied to this story.  There are do-gooders out there who are strong PETA trolls or just tree hugging animal loving anti hunting people wanting to destroy that which this community is passionate about.  I think the antisentiment is justified.  If a person of anonymity did this we probably would complain about it but to a lesser extent.  Most likely it infuriates us that a self proclaimed ambassador to the outdoors is a cheater and now his arrest is fodder for the anti hunting establishment.  Arguing over the finer points is irrellevant.  If the man deserves respect from this community than he should have given respect to the laws.  Whether you agree with it or not or even want to it to be true he is a representation of what we do in the eyes of those looking in from the outside.

So in my opinion all the negativity is fine in this instance.  I don't know him as an individual and I don't know how I will feel about it if I ever do.  I have fallen victim to the one sided opinions of others in the past and I try to avoid it whenever possible.  But, with that said, he has to account for what he did and part of that is public ridicule.  Some will be more ridiculous than others.  So be it.  Can't do the time - don't do the crime.

  6. I think it is the irony of all irony that it is illegal to use bait but there are shelves of it every year at all of the hunting supply stores.  I would be curious to know how much tax revenue comes from these sales that are so illegal and to some unethical.  Other ironic part is that legislation from state to state is inconsistent.  I am only pointing out the irony - I have no strong feelings because I don't know the man and to my knowledge have never crossed paths with him.  It seems like he has a lot of people who do know him and that he is not well liked.  If you are willing to do the crime you should be willing to do the time.  It is kind of sinister that he is making money off from illegal activities.

  7. I was just telling someone yesterday how much fun I had night fishing with you.  I am just too old to work all day, drive 1.5hr, fish all night, drive 1.5hr, and work all day again.  Going to have to work in a vacation day or two but I have started getting that itch again.  That was enjoyable.

  8. Kevin, I grew up with women hunting and fishing so when you share pictures of your wife with fish and game it really takes me back to a simpler less politically correct time when we just did what we did and enjoyed our time together.  The only agenda was to fill the freezer, the wood pile, and the canning jars.

I still say she knows how to pose for a picture - like she's been there before and what else would you expect...

    Thanks,

    Joe

  9. Change your name to Lindner...  :)

With Walleye, you can do everything right and still not get a taker.  Early morning and night is good advice for spring and fall.  Summer is generally night time.

  10. Catfishing just got a whole lot better for the trot liners.

There is a spot in Vestal where the susquehanna river when low looks just like the sesspool of a faulty septic tank.  You can catch cats all day one after the other.  The cities in this Country are getting away with a lot more than I think most citizens realize.  What can be done about it?  There are so many hot pressing issues in this country that these obvious ones stay under the radar.  How do you get political traction to keep crap out of the river when there is a well funded smear campaign against windmills?  It costs a lot of money to upgrade the waste water treatment facilities.  IMHO, I think this is as important as bridge/road infrastructure.  Everyone flushes and just assumes it is magically taken care of.

  11. Weather looks like I will be heading to the farm to do some gobbler hunting now instead.  I wanted to hit a river spot or two but the weather pattern doesn't support this venture anymore.  Good luck to you guys that go out this weekend.  It may be the first first-Saturday in May in a long time that my wife gets to see me for more than a few minutes here and there.

  12. Brings back memories when I was a kid.  We use to stay with friends up in Omar.  Steady action with a thrilling catfish break off every so often.  Back then it was bullheads and smelt fish frys.  hardly ever eat either anymore.
