  1. Went out late because of T storms, got on the water about 11 and still got wet, rained for about 30 min after we got set up, at least there was no lightning. We started in 80' and trolled north, mark fish in the 140' area but no bites. We were running 2 ten colors off the boards two wire divers out 200 and 250 and riggers varied, started at 60 and 80, then when we got out had them down as far as 110 and 120. Went all the way out to 220 never moved a rod, started back in had two shots and releases in 180', one on the 110 rigger and the other on 250 diver, finally took small Coho from the lead in 140' of water. We fished until 6:30, planed on staying out but wind turned and started blowing harder out of the west. when I cleaned the fish it was just full of alewives or at least mostly alewives some couldn't ID, this was the same as the browns we caught this year, just full of bait. Does anyone think that the abundance of bait has anything to do with this years catch, just seems like every fish we have caught has been pack full. I know when my wife fills me up it takes a lot of enticing to get me out of my chair, I'm just say in................. lol.

  2. Thanks a lot for this data, all great info keep it coming we all really appreciate the feed back. I for one am on the smart troll wagon, but for two reasons will wait until next year to buy.

    1. I have already used up my budget for this season or should I say my wife's budget.... lol.

    2. Just like any new high-tech electronics there are always bugs to work out, so for now, even though it's hard to do, I will remain patient and wait one more year.

I will say I'm a little jealous, I would love to have one now, but willing to wait. Thanks again for all the great info, if you do compile info regarding divers, I would really be interested.

  3. Did that a long time ago on an older boat we owned, parked it at a friends dock and replaced the bunks with treated wood and indoor outdoor carpet, worked good and lasted for years until we sold her. Many brands of carpet out there, buy good stuff or it will not last.

  4. mrclean, I like the idea off putting all the Fair Haven reports together and thanks for all the info. We decided to go right out when we came out of the chute, went out as far as 250' and did run into a couple of big groups of fish down 100 to 175 but no hits our deepest rig was set at 90'. One was at 190' and the other just inside 180'. When we got back in to 138' mark is when we picked up a couple, hit a spot where both riggers fired so i set one and started working on the other when the 10 color lead core went off, wow, from nothing for 3 hours to being totally crazy. Well, my wife was driving, not a fisherman, called my daughter that was texting in the cuddy on here phone, she came up grabbed the core, as i got mine close to the boat, it spit the hook, so i set that pole down and went for the other, reeled 20' in, it jumped twice at about 65' back and it was gone..(not happy at this point) but we did get the 4lbs brown that hit the lead core. Wife marked the spot the riggers first fired made a wide turn because the heavy boat traffic in this small area. When we got back to the spot, nothing, made another turn in closer and rigger fired this was a nice 9lbs brown. That was highlight of our day 2 for 4 but all in a little more than an hour, the rest of the time nothin. Seemed like the fish were working there way back in, keep marking fish as we worked into about 65' but never moved another rod. Well the spoons that caught the fish were, northport nailer Lemon ice and Green Mahi Glow, all were caught down 45' to 53'.

I was wondering what station you keep your radios on at Fair Haven, I was on 68 but very little chatter and most seemed far away.

  5. I use 12.5 lbs torpedo weights that that work well down to 100 or 110, after that you will start seeing more blow back. The first set I bought were only 9 lbs fish and the blow back was terrible.

  6. Got out about 8:00, took some time to get boards out, first time out with them but after about 30 mins or so( need to start timing myself) got everything out, two spoons off riigers down 6 ft and 90 ft back and 4 lines off boards 150 and 100 each side, all rapalas. After about an hour found some darker water caught a nice brown on a chicken wing spoon that weighed 13 pounds on my scale. After a short time, caught a small one (maybe 4 lbs didn't weigh) on a chartreuse J-9 rapala. Then just before we called it had one on that we lost at the boat, another small brownie. Thanks for all the advice about the boards it was an good first day out on the lake, at least until I got home and found out I had lost power steering fluid, but that's another story....... thanks again guys.

  7. This started last Sep. but at that time thought the power steering cap  had just popped off, after a day on the lake last year noticed power steering fluid in my bilge. Checked the pump, it was very low could hardly see any fluid, the cap was in place but was loose so filled with fluid. Never took the boat out again closed it up a week later. This year, first trip out yesterday, boat ran great trolled for 3 hours and then after pulling all lines in decided to open her up on the way back, about a mile or so. When I got her home pulled the cover and had p/s fluid in the dilge again, not sure where the fluid came from this time. I started the boat and ran it at the house, having my wife turn the steering wheel full in both directions. Did not see any fluid dripping or spaying anywhere, plenty on wet areas but nothing coming out. I thougnt it would be the high pressure hose but saw nothing. Has anyone had a similar experience, any help would be appreciated...... Thanks in advance.

  8. Just wondering if anyone is a member of BoatU.S. it definitely looks like it could be worth the price of joining. Just the towing alone could save :cash:  :cash:  :cash: , pretty much covers most of south shore. Anyone with experience with them or who has used the towing package, I would really like to hear you thoughts. Thanks in advance.

  9. I have fished for just about everything in fresh water, but this will only be my third year for salmon and I soooo can't wait for king season. We have done better every year with the advice form the guy's here. Now I'm at the point where I try to give back, when I can, great advice and great people here. Going to the top of the page and using the search this topic box is a excellent way to answer most of the common questions.

  10. If your putting the wire on those Okuma cold water 30's no backing will be fine,I had Okuma Magda 30's and 1000 ft of 30lb wire filled it nice, but I have heard others suggesting putting on 1 hundred feet on, and it will still fit. I bought the Okuma 453's and put 3oo ft on before the wire, probably could have gone with 400 but it's pretty full.

When I spooled my reels the first time I was alone, so I put the wire spool with a bolt through it so it could free wheel in the vise and then I had a second empty spool that was wider that fit tight in the vise so when I pulled the wire off the spool it went once around the empty spool and made enough drag to be tight on the reel. If you have a helper using Gill's method is the easier way to go.

No matter how you do it I would still suggest finding deeper waters and letting as much out as you can and reel it back in. That will take the stresses off the line, going from spool to reel and it will be consistently tight as well. I can't wait to use my new Okuma's I have 4 with wire all set to go as soon as summer gets here, if that ever happens.... ha ha ha.....good luck.

  11. They ran a presentation at Bass Pro in the tank, you can see a difference in the side to side action. They only had a few to choose from, nothing in natural colors so I bought one in blue and silver J-11. The cost is the same as traditional Rapals.
