Finally put it all together this am. Nothing but pure luck. With daylight savings time I walked into the woods almost right at first light. As I walked in the whole woods stank. You know, that smell that punches you in the nose and you get excited. Plus saw two scrapes where I bent limbs for a licking branch. As I got about 50 yards from my stand, bam, deer blew and ran away. I was heartbroken. So I thought my hunt was screwed up for good. But, needed my mental health sit so I climbed the tree. Not even 15 minutes later I hear what sounded like a freight train coming from my right.  Then I started hearing several grunting sounds.  I looked over when he finally came into view and felt my heart at the top of my throat. Then the shaking started. I mean, I’m 43 and been in the woods a while. Was a Sergeant 03 in the marines. But this animal rattled me.  I’ve never seen this in the woods. Ranged him at 42 yards. Picked up the crossbow to sight in.  Couldn’t stop shaking.  Dropped down, took a few breaths.  Still can’t stop. If it was a bow I might have rattled the arrow off. Closed eyes, deep breath, exhale- natural respiratory pause, then it went. Ran 40 yards, stopped and coughed.  Blood shot out his mouth and fell down. 20.5 inch spread. 203 lbs.  and a taxidermist is in my future.  I love this thread every year.

    Bad ass buck!

  2. Shot was a little low and forward. They let it sit a few hours and bumped it around midnight.
Went back this morning after a heavy rain and I got lucky and found it in the middle of a standing cornfield while they were looking for blood and tracks.
Better to be lucky than good.

Got it done today!! Planned a 3 day weekend and left work early today to make the drive from Rochester to my home town to hunt with my uncle.  Decided to hunt the evening even though it was very warm and walked my way to my dads stand.  This is traditionally the first stand I sit every season on my trip home. Got to stand at 330 and 2 hours later here comes the buck crashing straight at me.  I get up turn my body and he stops at 33 yards. Didn’t have time to range him and guessed 30. Dad was def looking down on me as the arrow hit a little low and back.  So I got out headed to truck and waited a few hours to go look.  Deer went about 350 yards and piled up. This is the biggest buck to date taken from Dads stand and one I know he would be proud of and a bit annoyed if he was still around to get yet another call telling him I got a deer out of his stand with the bow since he only gun hunted.

Fantastic story and a great buck!

Great Bucks Bill, Joe and Tommy! Mine is Bittersweet as the Coyotes got to him before I did. Shoulder shot, good blood but dried up. A first for me. Also seeing more Coyotes than ever.

    That sucks. Been there too.

BBD!!!! What can I say , I’d rather be lucky than good . After a early season grind my best day in woods would be one hr in stand . Had to run down to camp drop off ten bags of coal, figured I’d sit till dark if I could get in by 3 . My plan was to sit in a stand on the edge of a 1000 acre swamp in a travel corridor to water , boy was I right . Playing on my phone heard another squirrel, I thought, and looked up and 30 yards from me coming directly to me wind in my face and sun in his eyes. I made power moves to put glasses away phone in my pocket one handed grab bow off hanger while watching this guy on a mission, while sitting drew on him and stopped him at 15 yards Mabee… let her fly . The rest is history, now to get the kid a buck Saturday. GOODLUCK to all . Water will be key in these upcoming days of heat .

    Great job Tommy!
