  1. Nothing good there.... an 18 year old boat in salt water will need a new pair of engines ($20k) and most likely a complete rehab of vessel systems ($45k)

Be very careful with salt inboards

Down here guys are buying those boats, removing engines and putting multiple outboards on a bracket

  2. Or...you can just count to a given number. Given the same size bait, brand reel, boat speed, I would set the outside line at say 30 seconds and the inside at 20. There is no magic setback distance other than far enough. This is how we do it on the big pond when trolling for tuna/dolphin/Wahoo our reels have neither counters nor levelwinds. Back in the 80's mating for Howard Z on the Hells-a-poppin, he would count out loud while stomping his foot every second. It was always fun to mess up his count and watch him stew!

You could also fill your spools with 30# power pro depth meter line..it changes color every 25'...but at $50 / spool you might as well buy line counter reels.

  3. Let me give you some out of the box ideas. First you can replace the foam, remove it, replace the floor, drill 1 inch holes in the floor about 1 foot apart to pour the new foam back in. It will be good until it soaks again....say 5 years if left outside.... longer than you will have the boat if you store it inside.

OR. fill the void with pingpong balls...the objective is only to displace water so the balls will work better than foam and never saturate any additional water can simply drain by.  Archimedes principles of flotation require only dry displacement....foam does NOT make a boat float, it only displaces water.

as for the transom.... I have used wood, wood/epoxy, wood/epoxy and aluminum plate and seacast. If I was doing a starcraft I would do a seacast, or a large cut out plate around the lower unit and simply foam in the space.

At 4000# and a Loa of 29' this thing trailers great, scoots on the water, but like Skip says, will bounce you around on a cross chop. Running 25 in 4' seas would not be advised with LO water temps as nothing comes home dry. There was one of these hulls in dual console for $1000 Some guy in Fredonia, N.Y. was selling...with a convertible top would make a nice Lake boat.

  5. Sorry...i thought you were considering another 2nd bigger boat, including upkeep, dockage, storage ECT on a second lake miles from home with friends willing to pay their fair share of the expenses. Again...it all depends on the number of fishable days per year you expect to be on the lake. If you can find a guy at $500/day jump on it. I was thinking in terms of $800/day offsetting the cost and upkeep of a $25k Lake Ontario boat over the course of 5 years....that is based on 15 fishable days. I am also assuming that residual value of the boat at the end of 5 years will equal the amount of repairs. (10 k depreciation/$15k in repairs)
I know what a 25'-30' boat on LO cost and I will tell you that my numbers are right on the money. Now if you find a $500 charter boat you would get 24 fishable days with no headaches or maintenance....that's a no brainer!

  6. This may be a little out of the box thinking....but I would consider chartering a boat for Ontario. When you factor all the costs of you fish less then 20 days you will actually save money in the long run. Pm me if you want more insight on how to do this.

  7. We delt with such issues in the late 1970's, first the pro combinator, then EMS, Subtroll, Cannon.

But look not further we have this thing called a FISH HAWK!! go get one and you will save much time and money in the R&D of your product!!!

If you really need a problem to solve, find a machine to get my wedding photos off of a 3.5" floppy disk.....I am in really big trouble for putting them on there!!!!

  8. Don't hesitate, go get your new 4 stroke.  You will save fuel, you will get a warranty up to 6 years.  I just pulled the trigger on a pair of 2016  150 hp mercs, sweetest boat motor I've every seen!

    Suzuki

    Yamaha

    Honda

All are all great as well....I went with merc because their 90-150 engines are over built, light and made right here in the USA...I mean they are made from blocks FORGED in Wisconsin!  I was entertaining other engines until I heard that!!

Good luck, I think you would be fine with the 90....but the 115 is very sweet.

  9. That should be fun!not quite the same as netting a king salmon lol...let me know if ya need a gaff man! Should make for a really good story with a 50 plus hoo! Watch out for Omganothershortfatbaldone...baldy for short...he's been MIA for a few months here. Said something about the Marathon hump last post. Cuba might have mistaken him for a spy disguised as a hairy sea urchin....

T-top after the winter.  Not as fast as I expected, but I think it is propped wrong.  Fuel efficiency is  decent under 5 gal/hr at cruise between 3000 and 5000 rpm (30-38mph)  Certainly plan to fish all winter....wahoo are just showing up....if I ever get one I post it under fishing reports for some winter fodder!!!  Take care my friend!
