Wow, you caught very well! Hey, I think we waved at each other on Saturday morning, as I was chugging by you guys in the creek on the way out to the lake. I was in the white Tracker. I am pretty sure it was your boat. You looked like you were about to take some clients out. I am sure I will see you more this summer.

Thanks Captain Carl. Yeah, I don't have to worry about keeping the customers happy, but it would be nice to have some help during things like doubles!!LOL I am going to have to check out that shallow bite more extensively. I have only caught one Lake Ontario Brown, and I want more!!

Started out Saturday morning and setup in around 50 fow with planer boards, and a dipsy diver. I had bought 4 spin doctors on friday night, and decided to try them, since all of the locals seem to swear by them. I soon found out why!!LOL I trolled around for a couple of hours and missed a couple of fish on the spin doctor and dipsy diver. I finally put the boards away, and put out two diver rods with spin doctors and flies, and stayed with a green and black spoon on the downrigger. At around 9 a.m. I caught a nice coho on a diver rod in about 183 fow with 150' of line out. I soon had its twin in the boat on the other diver rod. Then I caught a nice little skipper king on the spoon. I decided to go with three spin doctors and flies, and changed to two downriggers and one diver rod set out at about 160'. I figured out that the magic depth seemed to be between 160' and 175' so I just trolled in circles in this area. Got a little crazy in the afternoon, and I had a double on the downriggers with an adult king and a coho. Very exciting when you are by yourself. I knew the king was a good fish, so I just concentrated on landing it, and then the Coho was still on the other line when I flopped the king onto the bottom of the boat. I also had a nice 30" steelhead hit my downrigger set down at 50', and give no indication he was on the line until he came flying out of the water behind the boat. That was fun, as he came out of the water another 4 or 5 times! I ended up boating 9 fish on saturday, and kept the nice steelhead and adult king. Saturday morning I was hoping for more of the same. I setup in shallow water again, and just kept my eye on the depth finder, noticing the cold water was in close today. I setup two riggers and a wire diver with the same rigs as yesterday. I am not very good with all of the names for all of the color patterns, but the flies and the spinnys all have green, black, silver and a little white in there. I know one of them was the 42 second color pattern. Anyways when I got out to 85 feet I got a nice rip on the diver rod, but it felt like I pulled it out of its mouth when I grabbed the rod. I circled out to 125' but could not see any marks, so I circled back in shallower again. Heading back north again with the wind, the diver rod really got a violent series of rips, and this time the fish was there, a nice 35" adult king. I caught one more nice 32" king off a downrigger in 95' of water on my next circle around, and then I saw a bunch of nice marks in the 95' range from 90' to 75' down, but could not get any more hits, so I decided to head out at 10:00 a.m. with two nice fish. Overall I am really satisfied with this outing, but wish my hookup percentage was a little better. Hoping to tangle with the infamous Tyee on one of these outings. Oh yeah, all of my fish were packed with 6"-9" alewife. Guess it is time to break out those magnum spoons.

I went out to Canandaigua tonight after work to test my new prop, and decided to try some trolling as well. I started out of the public ramp in Woodville, and trolled north along the East side of the lake. I started with one downrigger rod, one wire diver rod, and one rod on a planer board. I trolled for a couple of hours with no action, and made my turn by the apartments on the west side of the lake. I trolled along the west shore on the way back to the boat ramp, and switched to 2 downrigger rods and a planer board rod. I actually got a nice hit on each of the downriggers and managed to boat the second fish. It was a nice seven pound rainbow. I caught it on a white/glow Pro King spoon with the red eye near the top of it, at 45 feet down on the rigger over 140'. I had the first hit at 70' down over 150' of water on a white/glow Pro King spoon with the green skeleton decal down the middle, but only got that fish half way to the boat. It felt really solid as well.

I am planning on heading out of the Woodville boat ramp early tomorrow morning and running one wire diver, one down rigger and one long line off a planer board. Any advice on areas, or depths would be greatly appreciated. Looking for bows, browns and LL's. Will take Lakers as a last resort!!LOL

Those kids will be fishermen for life, now!!

The west coast saltwater boys mooch for salmon on the Pacific all summer long! I am sure it would work on the Great Lakes too. I know some guys on Lake Michigan that jig fish for Kings at the Harbor mouths with 1/4 ounce jigheads and gulp minnows, and they do well also. It would just take some time to build up the confidence in doing it, I think. Might be something to try on a day when nothing else seems to be working!

I am heading up tomorrow, and will be there until Tuesday, so If I catch some on Saturday I will give you an idea of depth, lure color, speed, etc. My boat is a white Tracker Tundra with a 200 horse Merc Optimax, and a 9.9 kicker, with South Dakota tags. Those are some bull-gills there! Great catch, and even better in the frying pan!!!

Try using a bait runner reel or opening up your drag....very possible the fish is picking up your bait, feeling tension and dropping it. If your not using Bait runner reels just loosen your drag so it's easy to peel line....the fish will pick the bait up and not feel any tension, then they will be less inclined to drop it.

x2 on the bait runners. Okuma makes a nice bait runner reel. I use them in Florida and they work awesome!

I prefer the shimano to the okuma baitrunners, but Okumas are fine for the money.

I had very similar luck this weekend, and they seemed way more scattered than last weekend. Looking back, I should have tried it out in deeper water. I stayed in that mythical 120'-150' zone as well and managed 5 fish saturday and 3 fish Sunday morning. I guess I always troll too fast for lakers, because we caught 4 kings and the and 4 cohos. Only one fish over 30 inches. Lake sure was calm and easy to get around on both days!

I have had the same problem with the Michigan Stingers, but not anything remotely as bad with my Pro-King spoons that I bought in Wisconsin.

Hello there, I am from South Dakota, and am out here working for the next year and a half os so, so I brought my boat with me. I just fished Lake Ontario for the first time last weekend by myself, out of Oak Orchard Creek, and stayed at Captain's Cove. I caught a bunch of salmon but nothing huge. I headed west like the rest of the boats both days, and was trolling in about 125' to 150' with most of the fish coming on the downriggers at 50' and 60'. I was pulling flashers and flies on and flashers with Pro King spoons both days. I caught 6 Cohos saturday from 5-8 pounds, and caught 6 Kings and one Coho Sunday morning. I caught all of my fish but one on a glowing white Pro King spoon, with a green stripe down ther middle on Sunday. I caught the one Coho on a green salmon fly with the E-chip in it. My flashers have the E-chip in them as well. My productive speeds were from 2.5-3.2MPH. I was accidentally going to slow Sunday Morning on that glassy water for about 45 minutes, wondering why I was not getting any bites, when I happened to glance at the Lowrance, and noticed I was only going 1.8 MPH. I sped up the motor and immediately hooked my first, and biggest King, @ 11 pounds. Shortly thereafter, I had boated 6 more fish, very exciting morning!! Had one hit and miss on the Dipsy diver. I plan to fish the big lake tons this summer, and look forward to catching some bigger fish. Look forward to meeting some of you on the lake. I have a white Tracker Tundra with a 200 horse Optimax and 9.9 Merc kicker on the back, with SD licensing. Thanks
