I decided to 'stoke' this discussion because i just discovered it. We go out to Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin every winter to icefish for Whitefish after 2 trips to Simcoe with poor results using the Meegs jigs and some other presentations.. We like to target them when they are 'on the reefs' in 60-80' fow with what's called a 'dropper rig'. They are a hard fighting fish with a very subtle jig bite. They are feeding mostly on gobies there. I clean them very carefully, rinsing and drying before vacum sealing in Wisconsin and transport back in a large cooler full of snow. i am a Swede and my entire extended family looks forward to my annual smoking of these fish the week before Christmas. I have attempted to figure out where on Erie the Canadians catch Whitefish with no success. If anybody has any hard intel on Lake Erie Whitefish I'd really like to hear about it. I have a part time charter biz for  Walleye on Erie, and Trout/Salmon on Ontario. I do keep a Sportsman License for Canadian water.

Chowder. I run charter out of Dunkirk and also grew up knowing the gentleman whom ran the Argo for years. I know he had attempted to try to open water fish for these several times. I do not believe he was successful. The Argo netted whitefish I believe trying to target brown trout west of Dunkirk off Portland. I was discussing how I struggled to catch Walleyes on a certain drop and he informed me those fish I was marking were mostly whitefish and some browns. From my understanding of our conversation there is a large population.

  2. Is there any trick to getting the belt tightened on the starboard motor. 5.7 l merc. The tensioner is on right side and I’m black and blue trying to reach over motor to get tight enough. Any tricks would help. My masculinity is in shambles currently.

    erihick,

The site page is being redone.  It was hacked.

However, the revised rules and site will be done this month and posted.

The only major change than what was listed above is a $400 entry fee each day and a $200 entry fee for the overall. So 1K total to get it all events inc overall.  Also, there will be an "optional" captains bet (each day), payable at time of Reg on site Friday.

The 1K (prorated) and Trout/Salmon Slam will happen the week up to the WHI. (same as last year)

Deadline to enter will be (1) week with $200 late fee accepted on Friday for late comers.

    Thank You

Thank you for the effort on setting this up. Missed last year because of date change and Covid. Very excited about the two day event.

When fishing Salmon on Downriggers we like to run a Medium action rod and 20lb test for pulling spoons. This will also work for running flasher/flies or flasher/meat, but I'd recommend bumping your line size up to 25-30lb. If you can afford it a Medium Heavy action rod would be better for pulling the flasher rigs especially as you fish deeper. A rod we run a lot of is the Daiwa Great Lakes 8' M (GL802MF). Again this will work for most of your downrigging needs.

Fishing divers we run the same brand, but a different model. For divers we run a MH rod. We have 9' and 9'6" rods on board, but on smaller boats you may want a longer rod to create a better spread and avoid tangles at the back of the boat when fish are coming to the net. You can find them to 10'6" below at FishUSA.

    Daiwa Great Lakes Rods

I’m also a fan of the Daiwa rods. The medium action rod we use for Spring Salmon and Walleye on Erie.

I wasn’t going to mention it but fishing with my father and friends in tournament’s it drives me crazy when they can’t get board off in a realistic time frame.

  6. Thinking of switching over to the ninja boards from my church TX 22. I fish kings in spring and the charter walleyes out of Dunkirk rest of year. I loved my church boards but think the ninja board one hand release is pretty handy. Some of my clients are hands on and want to take boards of, or do when I’m netting or getting fish off deck. Anybody made this switch over.

  7. I had a similar situation could not figure out what issue was. I have a closed cooled system and the water canister seal had a small rip in it. Just enough to pull air in system. Would make the motor get warm because my water pump would loose prime. My guess you are getting air somewhere.

  8. I have a ray marine st5000 it will no longer run at low speeds. Ran great all last year. It’s like it’s way to slow to react. At high speed seems to work properly. Read manual and can’t really seem to find and answer. It stays on auto and kicks in occasionally but it’s not maintaining course. Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

I had this happen on my crusaders. Was just my sensor after verifying with my temp gun... replaced it an never returned. Good luck!

You also stated alarm, is your alarm also linked with oil pressures too?

It is but I have an oil pressure gauge on dashboard. I’m replacing impeller will it’s in yard and temp sending unit. Impeller If not needed to be changed will end up needed to be changed at some point. Better now then while out on lake.

I would get a infra red with laser light and compare the two engines over varying speeds. Had a burning smell we couldn't figure out , turned out to be the rubber hose coming off the exhaust manifold. The Temp gauge was always ok because it ran off the top of the intake manifold which was part of the closed cooling system. The exhaust was not part of that reading and the raw water elbow going into the manifold was blocked up with crud , the heat gun showed it.

Thank you I have read about issues in manifold.

I'm assuming it's twins, switch senders from one to the other and see if the starboard engine does the same with the port sender in it . Not often they go bad but it could save a lot of needless time & $ in the end.

I got you I first read this post incorrectly. Thank you that’s good advice.
