Now that I’m getting into waterfowl I am curious how people clean their birds. Do you let them age? For how long? Do you pluck or skin your birds? Do you keep whole or just certain parts? Do you keep any organs?

Well ended the year with one more mallard. It was a fun first season with Archie. We will be working on his retrieve in the off season. And we may chase a few rabbits.

They are great dogs. We are having a fun first year. Archie is almost 9 months and I'm amazed at his capability to learn. He's great in the field and the house.

Managed to still find some open water and got a few. If I knock them down Archie finds them. Still have some retrieve to hand work but a great first year.

I did not compare the DD. I can tell you I am very please with my choice of a WPG. He has tons of natural instinct that as a new versatile dog owner I hope I don't screw up. He also is a great family dog. He is just under 7 months old and I can't tell you how many people are amazed he is that young. Certainly he is a puppy but compared to other breeds he is very well behaved and intelligent for his age. He's got a great nose and knows how to work the wind. When duck hunting he is looking at the birds waiting for them to fall. He absolutely loves the water and not gun shy. I can't wait to see how he is at 2 years.

The 6 month old is proving his worth. He swam down a crippled bird into the cat tails and after sending him back in 3 times he chased the bird across the pond and made a great retrieve. He has also put me and my daughter (first year hunting) on a hand full of pheasants. It's going to be a fun season.

My daughter with Archie on our first hunt. He pointed 5 pheasants. My girl had a blast missing them! Need more range time! The dog was working the birds and my daughter is hooked. A great day.

Good start to the year. Youth hunt is this weekend in our area It will be Archie's and my daughter's first duck hunt. Looking forward to it.

I was in a similar situation as woodie and talked to some local breeders. It was important for me to be comfortable with the breeder and their pedigree. When multiple breeders from all over the country kept recommending the same breeder it was worth my research. Ultimately I felt comfortable with him and his goals as a breeder. Plus he has similar hunting habits as me so that helped too. I like the fact that this breed is difficult to find. Hopefully it stays that way and the lines stay true

Currently I breast them out and keep the legs and hearts. I clean them the day I shoot them. I’ve read where some people age for 3 days but I haven’t tried this.
