  2. Hop, I put a very lot of time in on my off season to make sure I am ready for season. When deer season is over the very next day I am in the woods doing everything I can to improve my lands from what I have learned from the season, and it could be pruning apple trees to trimming shot lanes to working on stands planning the next seasons plot plantings to hanging fence you wouldn't believe all I do!! Some days I ask myself ?? Are you crazy?? Yup. Lol.

But my craziness has made me learn a lot about land and qdm and deer in general. Lots of trial and errors along the way research and reading to. I do not fill my buck tag every season either. Many seasons I ate buck tag soup and I don't really like it but I know it's the Rit thing to do to reach my personal goals at my age in the game.

  3. Well many deer sighted tonight bucks and doe all on there feet!!

My buddy was happy to see so many deer he said he had more fun watching them and it was way to cold to mess with gutting one this afternoon!! He and I had many chances but both decided not to shoot. We really laughed watching the small bucks pushing doe around and how aggravated the doe would get with them !!

    Great afternoon enjoying Mother Natures

Creatures!! And laughing with a very good friend of mine!!

  4. Guppy I agree with all you said.

But I think every hunter out there has a dream of shooting a

BIG BUCK some time in there life.

    Meat hunters included.

I hunt for meat and a trophy and choose to pass small bucks I have 11 yrs in trail cam pics that can show what passing small bucks can do for a property !!

  5. I have done many of my own also and do prefer it.

But my time was limited with working and farming and did not have the extra time, so now I will never trust any processor ever again. And I will from now on kill my cows on the farm and have them processed on the farm along with deer and hogs!!

I hate crooks. I don't steal cause I don't want to be stole from. I Treat others like i want to be treated.

I guess you can't trust no one its sad.

  6. Agreed BigWilley I have been doing the same for fifteen years and have been fortunate to take 7 pope and young over that time. I am lucky as most of my neighbors do the same. Problem is a few still drop the first buck

Yea the guys with no patience or time tend to do that. Drop the first young buck.

That's why I am all about one buck tag cause then they should be done.

I am very aggravated at the moment as I just called a processor I used in bow season and was supposed to make me summer sausage and pepperoni sticks with the hind quarters from my bow deer. All to find out that they don't have my meat or finished product either.

They gave my meat away and then tried to offer me some off other guys deer and they would have my meat by Christmas. Mind you it was bow season and I was the first one to order smoked meat from them. They Never

Called me and still no meat.

So what meat would I get "fresh meat" they said. What a joke. From what a road kill??

Or a gut shot deer ?? Or someone else's deer?! My kids and wife were looking very very forward to this smoked meat !!!!!

    Unreal.

  7. Deer drives I'm no fan of.

To Often a lot of bad comes from them. Wounded deer and bullets flying past your friends at close distances or slamming in the tree next to guys. Or guys getting hurt.

I see way more deer sitting and they are in a relaxed state and give me a clean ethical good human shot. Rather then running and a couple guys unloading on them.

    Only my opinion.

  8. Jake can't agree more. We prolly have some of the smartest deer in the country due to our 20 hunters per sq mile stat.

If 18 of those hunters passed small bucks could you only imagine.

And of course 2 guys tag out on small bucks and go home and sit on the couch the rest of the season !! Lol.

It's possible here to have bigger Bucks and more of them but it's honestly in all our hands only.

My tree stand in Kansas is 10' up and the deer don't look up.

Some of my Ny stands are 20' plus and they look up at me still. Lol.

  9. How can a guy with 5 acres of land and 2 kids pass a 5 pt if he only had 2 days to hunt????

Mid west dudes owns 200 acers take that 200 here in new York and u got 8 different land owners and friends hunting it.

What do u think is going to happen with all the deer???

    It's not rocket science.

If you have 5 acres and 3 hunters that sounds dangerous. But if you mean kids and to feed them that's your choice As a hunter.

But it's all what you your self as a hunter wants to achieve.

And again it's only the hunters that can grow big bucks if they want them.

Deer have much larger home ranges then 5 acres in nys or even 200 acres for that matter.

Some places in the mid west on 200 acres might be a 190 of fields and 10 of woods.

Lol. That 10 acres of woods is loaded like shooting bucks in a bucket. Lol.

Ny is much more human populated then mid west states to.

We have a lot of woods in nys and plenty of places for deer to make it threw a season is all I am saying.

  10. A longer season gives a hunter time to pass small bucks and be more selective. iMO

Again it's up to the HUNTERS.

    Just my 2 cents.

I really prolly shouldn't say this BUT here we go. My Biggest bucks have came in during the rut on the same trail as small bucks did that same day I passed the smaller bucks!!!

I believe big older wiser Bucks use young bucks to follow and actually use them as hunter bait to stay safe. Something to think about next time you want to shoot the small buck.

  11. The gun seasons are for sure lengthy compared to other states. I agree.

It's not the length of the season that allows small bucks to NOT grow tho. It's the HUNTERS.

It's in the hunters hands and what they choose to shoot and put there tag on not the seasons length.

Let em grow they will be bigger next year.

  12. Im assuming we are seeing a change in the times. Guys are passing small bucks in hopes of shooting bigger ones and shooting does to fill the freezer instead. A lot of talk of QDMA now a days on property of all sizes. NYS will never be a big buck state like the midwest but the NYSDEC is even starting to encourage us let them grow.

I have been passing 1.5 and 2.5 yr old bucks for many many years. In hopes they live and grow in to a mature buck. Gamble I take !!

Way to many guys drop the hammer on the first buck they see still, 70% to 80% of our buck harvest is 1.5 yr olds.

Nys has great genetics and could be a better big buck state then it is, if more guys passed small bucks. I have preached to my neighbors to shoot the doe for meat and to leave the little bucks in the woods on there feet to grow.

Meanwhile opening day they shoot 2 twin 5 pointers for meat and then throw the tiny little racks in the corner of the garage !!!! Why??

How many small bucks can a man in his 50's shoot before he wants to put his tag on something he could be proud of????

and not throw the tiny rack in the corner of the garage for mice to eat. Same neighbors like to tell me : "there is so much land for them to hide around here." That's the NY mentality of a meat hunter and that's why we will never have what the mid west has if they continue to not pass.

Look at the bucks on Ny antler outdoors pages and pages of beautiful bucks. There could be more if we passed more it's that simple.

I wish the whole state was antler restrictions and shoot a doe to earn a buck tag and only one buck tag. I bet that would change the herd!!

Just my opinion !! I am no biologist by no means just a farmer dude who grows animals!!

    Lol

  13. Good deal Hop.

Stick with it. One year I killed a big 8 point the last day last 15 min of legal lite. You never know what the next deer to walk in to your life could be. I to am up to current with my tags and freezers are full!!

I have a wounded doe on this particular property that one of my neighbors shot and has a very bad leg!!

I would like to take that deer out of its misery before the coyotes do.
