    November 20 am

    22 degrees

    Frosty

    Partly sunny

    Calm wind

Picture perfect morning to be in the deer woods. Cold. Hard frost. Calm wind. Perfect. My morning had a decent amount of action with lots of bucks cruising. 14 does/fawns and 8 bucks seen. Of the 8 bucks 3 of them were matures including a giant 8 pt.

At about 8ish I spotted a big stud 8pt about 200 yards away. He quickly sent checked the does in front of him and moved on. Right behind him was a younger, decent buck but that seemed to be just following him around. I grunted a couple times but I'm guessing they just cruised past me in the thick stuff. About 10 minutes went by and a doe fawn popped out of the woods and then a mature doe. It was obvious they were bumped. My guess was by the two bucks I just saw. The doe and fawn were acting nervous and I was begging for another showing from the big 8. Unfortunately two young bucks from opposite directions show up and the doe and fawn quickly escape from their harassment. I watch as all the deer seem to go their separate ways and the woods goes quiet again. I'm still focused on the woods out in front of me when I hear the scuffle of leaves next to me. I turn my head expecting to see a squirrel and to my surprise this 11 point is 5 yards from me. He somehow snuck in on my blind spot and I quickly made the decision to shoot. Thankfully my gun was already in my lap (from all the previous action). I raised the gun only to realize I could find the deer in the scope. I quickly turned the power all the way down and found him in the scope. I gave him a quick mouth grunt to stop him in an opening in the thick stuff and squeezed the trigger. He quickly exited and I honestly thought for a second that I missed. His reaction to the shot didn't seem like much. I gave it about 30 minutes and got down to see if I could find blood and it was every where. I could see a blood trail going down the deer trail like someone threw red paint in the woods. I walked out and gave it two hours and returned with my kid. The blood trailing was easy and the deer was piled within 65 yards from my tree. One lung and heart shot.

Had a rough day yesterday had a good shooter pass close by at 7:30 am and my shot was deflected buy an unseen branch. Shook it off and remained in stand saw a couple more small buck. Then at 10:30am I heard gravel falling from the rail road bed and readied myself and through the thickets came a huge shooter he walked into my window at 33 yds and I release seeing my arrow heading straight for the boiler room only to see it fly right under his brisket. He jumped back into the brush none for the worse other than a little haircut . I found a couple of strands of hair mixed in the muddy broadhead when I retrieved it. Human error I help on him for 20 yds not 30 yds I guess he had me a little unhinged.

I left the woods after that for 2 hours then decided to end my pity party and get back in the stand. I sat from 1:30 pm till dark only seeing a coyote which  almost gave me a shot 3 times but not quite.

wind change had me hunt in my stand on the opposite side of the thick center bedding area.

I saw a couple small buck early sniffing around. I started thinking mature bucks were locked up again.

Shortly after a doe runs by and heads into thickets I look back and see the big shooter from the day before!

He runs after her but further away and gives me no shot. Soon after a parade of small bucks coming from all different directions ( now is the time to be hunting doe bedrooms)

I didn’t plan on sitting all day but I said to myself “you are not leaving the woods today!”

Shortly after the big shooter from earlier works back though the thickets

Too far and thick for any kind of shot.

I grunt to him and get his attention and for a split seconds it looks like he’s going to come! But that was fleeting he headed away nose to ground. 30 seconds later a 2 1/2 year old buck follows him.

Im thinking I just can’t catch a break.

I settle back in and start to watch the football game on my phone.

After Chiefs  1st TD I hear rustling and look to my left and hear comes the 10 pt I’ve got pictures off. Big bodied mature buck but not real wide.

I said he keeps coming I’m gonna take him. He came in on a string and stopped then turned broadside at 15 yds. The rest is history . I saw the arrow hit and knew he was done,he ran off through the woods hung a right and I lost sight of him but heard him crash. I waited 20 minutes got down didn’t even look for blood just through the woods to where I heard him crash to see the white belly dead as a door nail. He is now hung in my shed, my cousin and I dragged him out whole as I didn’t want to leave guts in the area especially with coyotes running around. He weights 170lbs  gutted so he went over 200lbs live weight

Haven't seen him since his velvet came off till this Monday when he showed up on my camera looking at my mock scrape at 1230pm. I couldnt hunt Monday but made plans to hunt afterwork Tuesday on till either I got my shot or he stopped showing up on my cameras

Tuesday I got in my stand at 430 and didnt see any deer till about 6pm when I heard a buck grunting and pushing a doe around. I couldnt see bodies just legs through all the beech trees. They never came where I could see them.   Just as I pulled into my apartment complex I got a pic of him in my mock scrape again. It was about an hour after dark so I knew he was still in there!

Wednesday I got in my stand alittle later around 440 and there was actions right away.  I tried to set up my video camera but a screw fell out of the head so I couldnt use it.  I filmed a couple smaller bucks including a nice 2.5yr old 9pt and some does by hand held.  About 5 mins after 2 does came thru I heard grunting from behind me.  The buck circled me but I couldnt see it just heard the grunts.  Finally I saw him walking to my mock scrape gave him a couple grunts and he turned my way.  He walked right into 12yrds where I put a g5 montec through his heart. He piled up 75yrds away!

This took place on 15 acres in Genesee county that I have permission to hunt.  Its my 2nd mature buck in 3 yrs off that property.  The key is to not over hunt it and wait till they show up on camera.  Every buck in those woods hits my mock scrape at 1 time or another every season.

    Congratulations!!!! Beast

Got the text from my kid about 6ish that he arrowed a doe. Told him to sit until dark and call me when he was out of the woods. The shot was a pass through from about 13 yards. He was confident in the shot but felt it was a little back. We gave it 2 hours and headed to the arrow site. Easy to find with the Nockturnal lighting up the woods. No blood at the shot site but the arrow looked and smell of rich blood. I guessed it was all liver. My kid had the direction of travel and found blood about 20 yards. At the end of a very light blood trail was a dead doe. She went about 50 yards. All liver. Great to see my kid back in the game after he's been on the sidelines for a couple of years.

Lots of good bucks on camera during the daylight today. Anyone else seeing the same thing? I'd love to hear some theories on why.

Moon phase ,, just out of velvet, isolation is coming to a end , single buck movement to establish ground. My 2 cents like clockwork every year…

  9. Little late for the party,,, but glad to see you’ve made the switch, you won’t be disappointed. As you know I’m a SPYPOINT guy.. these cameras all have their quirks on you get them all fired up and running you will learn as you go.. good luck I run 12 now year round.. it’s like being there when your not.. lol you’ll see the ONE I’m after two years with him !! Hopefully Mallory or I can seal the deal this year!!!! Bring on October 30.. FYI East Fork shut down for deer season
