    Downrigger weight question.

    Wondering if anybody has ever used window weights for dragging bottom in the finger lakes. Wondering beause I found a couple forms from out west for fishing for Kokanee where the set up is a cylindrical weight for dragging bottom with spinner blades directly attached to the weight. The theory is the cylinders won't hang up on the bottom because they are long and thin and the cable is on the top of the weight. I've donated plenty of lead to the bottom of Cayuga and Owasco. Just wondering if anyone else has tried the different weight. I know blow back would be more but when bouncing bottom I don't know how much that makes a difference. Thanks.

    From my experiences with outboard motors because they cram so much in to a little package it's always easyer to take as much off the motor as you can so you can see and get to the parts. Try to avoid removeing anything with gaskets so you don't ruin them and just take pictures of everything step by step so you can remember how it all goes back togeather. If you have to remove the oil tank remove it just put it togeather the same way. Just take your time be maticulus and you should be fine.

    Walk away from it for a hour and then go back to it. If you were able to remove the carb you should be able to get it back in. Sometimes frustration makes you miss something small in the big picture.

    I don't know if maybe with the high sun and warm weather the fish that are suspended and not hitting anything are maybe boat shy. I don't know all I know is the last time I went out. Fish were all over in suspended water 40 to 60 ft range and wouldn't do anything. When I moved to 80 ft and bounced bottom I started catching fish. Amazing how a animal with a brain the size of a pea can keep us scratching our heads.

    I had same problem 2 weeks ago. Lots of marks and bait suspended but would not hit any thing. Moved into 80 fow and dragged bottom and started catching fish. I think the warm weather drives them down on the bottom. The suspended fish are there but not actively feeding. I don't know I guess just a theory. They were feeding better on the bottom than in the temp. Maybe things will change on the next over cast day.

    Go with blue and white spoons Or black purple and white spoons. Been laying them right down on the bottom. How I've caught them this time of year. Hot weather seems to make them go deep and hug the bottom.

    Or I always figure that if I hold the real at my stomach and pull the line out of the real in till my arm is fully extended is aprox 3 ft. So to let 300 ft out pull the line out of the real 100 times. You can figure out how far it is for you with tape measure. Hold the tape at your stomach and pull the tape out. Easyer than trying to trip to reels at same time.

    I run 60 lb braid an you will see a huge difference in depth and ability to trip the diver. I usally figure about 3ft out to 1 foot down on # 1 setting. But that depends on speed and other factors. On the finger lakes trolling slow for lakers I will hit botom in 80 ft with around 300 ft out. I like the braid a lot easyer to work with them wire only down fall is the fleas.

    Can you manually move the throttle. May be something easy like a bad throttle cable. Start simple. Make sure you have compression. In all of the cylinders. I had a 140 johnson do the same thing and All it was was a stretched out cable.

    Fished today out of Myers. Started north almost right out of the shoot. Fished north all the way to AES and then fished across the lake and headed south. On the water any about 0730. About half way to AES picked up 1st laker about 100 ft down over 120 ft of water on a dipsey pulling a lure jenson paddle yellow and silver with a green and silver dream weaver spoon. Second fish came at the plant off a dipsey with 300 ft out pulling black purple and white spoon. Left riggers parked at 58 and 50 Had to releases with no one home. On the way across the lake picked up anouther nice fish about midway across. Lost it behind the boat but saw it was big and silver. Fished back south and ended the day with a couple more shorts. Marked good bait and fish in deeper water today around 40 to 60 ft over 200 plus but could not get anything to go. Ended the day around 4 pm. Caught total of 8 fish and kept 2. Long day but boat finally cooperated so I would say it was a good day. Left riggers at in the 50 to 60 range and chased depth with the dipseys.
